As the first report of the accident came in, Burton was sitting in his of rice on the top
floor of the building. Immediately, realizing the seriousness of the whole incident, he gave over to the investigation a ground floor room with a small waiting - room leading off it and took charge himself, leaving his second -in -command to take over all other cases.

He interviewed the first witness almost at once, making sure that every thing was done that could be done to put him at his ease. However, the wit ness was evidently nervous and Burton took considerable pains to go over the ground thoroughly, choosing and checking each word to be precise and taking the man's statement down in longhand himself. The witness had called the police, he'd waited until the ambulances began to arrive then when the first police car arrived on the scene he'd been asked to report to the station which is what he had done.

Burton explained that regrettably it would be necessary for him to go to court because of the serious nature of the disaster. More he could not say at present. He'd be grateful if the man would stay in contact with the police.

When he had gone, Burton put his head in his hands and considered be fore asking for the next witness. He couldn't be regarded as a hundred per cent witness because he had been behind a wall when the explosion occurred. But in spite of his nerves, Burton had the impression that he was reliable, not afraid of incriminating himself and a fairly accurate observer.

Well, there would be other accounts and no doubt all these would be slotted into place like a jigsaw and the whole picture would become clear. He raised his bead and pressed the buzzer on his esk.

"a hundred percent witness" most probably means ______.

A.be was patient and talkative

B.he was a totally reliable witness

C.he was well - informed

D.he was the only person interviewed in the incident

Before the conference began, a Japanese businessman was introduced to an American business
man at the lounge. The Japanese businessman, arms extending downwards from his shoulders, bowed from his waist toward the American businessman to whom he was just introduced. His eyes were directed ahead, his face showed no particular expression.

The American businessman stood straight. His eyes focused on the Japanese man's eyes. He smiled and put out his right hand.

Both men smiled briefly in embarrassment. The Japanese man straightened up and put out his right hand. The American withdrew his hand and bowed his head. A broader smile of embarrassment, and some noise from each man—not really words, just some sounds from their throats—indicating discomfort. They were in the course of a conflict of customs; they had different habits for greeting people they were being introduced to.

When people are planning to go to another country, they expect to encounter certain kinds of differences. They usually expect the weather and the food to be different. A.he felt a little bit nervous

Another thing an astronaut has to learn about is eating in space. Food is weightless, just
as men are.

Food for space has to be packed in special ways. Some of it goes into tubes that a man can squeeze into his mouth. Bite-sized cookies are packed in plastic.

There is a good reason for covering each bite. The plastic keeps pieces of food from traveling in the spaceship. On the earth very small pieces of food would simply fall to the floor. But gravity doesn't pull them to the floor when they are out of the plastic in a spaceship. (78) They move here and there and can get into a man's eyes or into the spaceship's instruments. If any of the instruments is blocked, the astronauts may have trouble getting safely home.

As astronauts travel on longer space trips, he must take time to sleep. An astronaut can fit himself to his seat with a kind of seat belt. Or, if he wants to, he can sleep in a sleeping bag which is fixed in place under his seat. But be careful he must put his hands under the belt when he goes to sleep. This is because he is really afraid that he might touch one of controls that isn't supposed to be touched until later.

Why would astronauts cover each bite of food in space?

A.Because small pieces of food would fall down to the floor.

B.Because weightless pieces of food might make trouble when they travel around.

C.Because they haven't enough food for longer trips.

D.Because astronauts don't want to waste food.
