The faces of elderly, happily-married people sometimes resemble each other. Dr, Al- ken studied a number of couples who had been married for at least twenty-five years. Each couple provided two photographs—one photo for each partner at the time of their marriage and another photo of each partner twenty-five or more years later. All background was cut from the photos to remove any clues. The photos were then displayed in groups: a random grouping of the persons at the time of their marriage and another random grouping of the same persons who took photographs later. Some judges were asked to pick out the partners. They failed totally with the first group. Their judgments were no better than chance. But with the photos taken twenty-five or more years after the marriage, the judges were quite successful at deciding who was married to whom. They were particularly successful with the most happily-married couples.
Dr. Aiken believes there are several reasons why couples grow alike. One reason has something to de with imitation. One person tends to copy or do the same as someone else without knowing it. He says human beings imitate the expressions of the {aces of their loved ones. Another possible reason, he says, is the common experience of the couples. There is tendency for people who have the same life experience to change their faces in similar ways. For example, if a couple suffered a lot from sad experiences, their faces are likely to change in a similar way.

M: Hmmm, interesting. Actually, I could never understand modern art. It's so abstract.
W: I happen to know a little bit about this type of art. The artists were motivated by the ideas of that time. Their works reflected how they made sense of the society around them.
M: Please tell me about the one on the wall. I don't understand it at all. It looks like a bunch of splashes of paint to me.
W: Actually, it is, and that's exactly what this particular artist intended to do. He placed the canvas on his studio floor and poured paint on it very quickly.
M: (Chuckling) I could have told you that] But why would he do that？
W: In the fifties, many artists were interested in psychological theories. They believed that most paintings were directed by the conscious mind, and they wanted to avoid that. By painting with accelerated speeds, they hoped to use the unconscious mind. By painting quickly, they felt that they were forcing their unconscious minds to make instant, intuitive decisions about the color. They believed that logical, deliberate decisions would interfere with the free flow of images and ideas. These artists believed that their work was more honest using this method and they believed that honest work was most important.
M: Thank you for telling me this. I always wondered why they painted this way. Modern art makes a lot more sense to me when I know the ideas behind it.
