Concrete is probably used more widely than any other substance except water, yet it remain

s largely unappreciated. “Some people view the 20th century as the atomic age, the space age, the computer age — but an argument can be made that it was the concrete age,” says cement specialist Hendrik Van Oss. “It’s a miracle material.” Indeed, more than a ton of concrete is produced each year for every man, woman and child on Earth. Yet concrete is generally ignored outside the engineering world, a victim of its own ubiquity and the industry’s conservative pace of development. Now, thanks to environmental pressures and entrepreneurial innovation, a new generation of concretes is emerging. This high-tech assortment of concrete confections promises to be stronger, lighter, and more environmentally friendly than ever before.

Concrete is also a climate-change villain. It is made by mixing water with an aggregate, such as sand or gravel, and cement. Cement is usually made by heating limestone and clay to over 2,500 degrees F. The resulting chemical reaction, along with fuel burned to heat the kiln, produces between 7% and 10% of global carbon-dioxide emissions. “When we have to repeatedly regenerate these materials because they’re not durable, we release more emissions,” says Victor Li who has created a concrete suffused by synthetic fibers that make it stronger, more durable, and able to bend like a metal. Li’s creation does not require reinforcement, a property shared by other concretes that use chemical additives. Using less water makes concrete stronger, but until the development of plasticizers, it also made concrete sticky, dry, and hard to handle, says Christian Meyer, a civil engineering professor at Columbia University.

Making stronger concretes, says Li, allows less to be used, reducing waste and giving architects more freedom. “You can have such futuristic designs if you don’t have to put rebar in there, or structural beams,” says Van Oss. A more directly “green” c6nerete has been developed by the Australian company TecEeo. They add magnesium to their cement, forming a porous concrete that actually scrubs carbon dioxide from the air.

While experts agree that these new concrete will someday be widely used, the timetable is uncertain. Concrete companies are responsive to environmental concerns and are always looking to stretch the utility of their product, but the construction industry is slow to change. “When you start monkeying around with materials, the governing bodies, the building departments, are very cautious before they let you use an unproven material,” Meyer says. In the next few decades, says Van Oss, building codes will change, opening the way for innovative materials. But while new concretes may be stronger and more durable, they are also more expensive — and whether the tendency of developers and the public to focus on short-term rather than long-term costs will also change is another matter.

By saying “it was the concrete age”(Line 3, Para. 1), Van Oss means that

A.the traditional building material concrete is the only man-made miracle.

B.concrete is indispensable in the development of modern construction industry.

C.compared with other inventions, concrete is more practical and useful.

D.concrete, as a building material, can be mixed with any other materials.

This book is about the future of technology. In it we will examine some of the many recent
developments in a few key fields and try, in a limited way, to predict where they will take us in the next fifteen years or【46】______.

If that sounds like a modest goal, it's not. Technology is the【47】______(dominate) force of our time and probably of all time to come. It appears in more varieties than we can count. It changes so rapidly【48】______no scientist or engineer can keep up with his own field, much less with technology in general. It permeates and shapes our lives【49】______every turn. We ive in technology【50】a fish live in the sea, and we have only a little better chance of【51】______ (forecast) the details of its future changes.

Yet the task is well【52】w______undertaking. Whatever hints we can glean (一点点搜集) about the future win help us prepare for the changes to come. Modest forecasts, evidence of trends, a few concrete developments to be expected all are better than no warning at all. And【53】th______technology has made the present much less stable than the past, and surely will make the future more disturbed still, there is good reason to hope that our lives,【54】______sum and on average, will be better as a result. A need for beauty, lightness, corrosion resistance, or other specific properties must be p
resent before plastic can be considered as competitors of brick, window glass, cement, cast iron, or steel, since volumetric prices are so low for the last substance and for wood. It is not particularly unfortunate that plastics do not appear economical for every use. There is no reason why industry should want to replace wood, brick, concrete, and metals when the latter are adequate and inexpensive. Too much has been written about the coming "Plastics and Light Metal Age," which is prophesized as the successor to the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age. In the historical sequence of these earlier periods, there is logic in the quantitative sense; one age gave way to another when the use of a new material exceeded in quantity that of its predecessor. For the plastics and light metals, however, a different picture presents itself; less than 3,000,000 tons of all these materials are being produced annually, while steel production exceeded 90,000,000 tons last year and will probably not recede to less than 60,000,000 tons for many years. This is still the Iron Age or rather the Steel Age.

The writer considers that the Bronze Age succeeded the Stone Age because

A.there was a scarcity of wood and other building materials

B.bronze was less expensive than stone

C.stone was no longer available

D.more bronze than stone came into use

Memories

If your experience is that of most students, you will probably find that drawing the plan and thinking about your early home brought back events you have not thought of in years. Students in my classes remember exactly what it felt like to fall out of bed and break an arm, what the blue tile in the bathroom looked like smeared with lipstick, and the way the kitchen smelled after the furnace explodeD.They find that their memories contain many more details than they expected.

Most of the memories stimulated by this exercise take two forms: recounting events and supplying details. This combination of events and details comprises narrative, because making experience conscious requires the ability both to tell what happened, and happens, and fill in details that make the events come alive. This excursion into memory also illustrates the close connection between narration and learning because memory provides one way for us to know or bring to consciousness something about experience in this world. Not every writing task you face will carry the same emotional freight as does the one based on your house plan, but the care in recounting and attending to detail evoked here provides a model for writing narrative. By learning to draw on the resources of your memory, you can increase the detail in your writing. One way to reach these resources is to make connections with concrete objects. Visualizing your childhood home probably helped you think of details that would have otherwise remained buried in your mind, Perhaps you have had the experience of being able to recall information during an exam by remembering where it was written on the page of your notes or by focusing on the place where you learned it.

Another way to draw on the resources of your memory is to recreate a memory chain that begins with some physical object and lead you 10 recall various experiences.

第 36 题 The passage is mainly about

A.the role of exercise in acquiring a good memory

B.the use of memory in learning writing

C.the role of memory in college learning

【With the 4G telecommunications systems now starting to be deployed, people are looking tow
ards the development of 5th generation or 5G technology services.Although the deployment of any wireless or cellular system take years, development of the 5G technology systems is being investigated. The new 5G technologies will need to be chosen developed and perfected to enable timely and reliable deployment. The new 5th generation,5G technology for cellular systems will probably start to come to fruition around 2020. The current status of the 5G technology for cellular systems is very much in the early development stages. Many companies are looking into the technologies that could be used to become part of the system. In addition to this,a number of universities have set up 5G research units focused on developing the technologies for 5G. In addition, the standards bodies, particularly 3GPP are aware of the development but are not actively planing the 5G systems yet. Many of the technologies to be used for 5G will start to appear in the systems used for 4G and then as the new 5G cellular system starts to formulate in a more concrete manner, they will be incorporated into the new 5G cellular system. The major issue with 5G technology is that there is such an enormously wide variation in the requirements:super fast downloads to small data requirements for IoT than any one system will not be able to meet these needs.Accordingly a layer approach is likely to be adopted. As one commentator stated:5G is not just a mobile technology. It is ubiquitous access to high & low data rate services.】 Based on the paragraph above,at present,5G technology for cellular systems (), many of the technologies to be used for 5G () in the systems used for 4G,the major issue facing with 5G technology is ().
