听力原文: Today I'd like to continue to talk about the reason why the United States developed at such a high speed in the past 400 years. There are many factors. America has an abundance of natural resources including some of the best farm lands in the world. People from many countries settled them, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge and skills. But in the last 100 years it has been the workingman that was the backbone of the nation.

What is the American workingman? He's a worker in a shoe factory or a meat packing-house or a coal mine. But more than that, he is a husband and a father. He raised his children to value the importance of cooperation. And he raised his children to help them better themselves. Seldom do their children forget the value they have learnt at home.

The workingman fought hard to achieve what he has for almost all his life, but today the workingman is faced with a new kind of struggle. Ever advancing technology is taking his job. It's very probable that the workingman will be replaced by a machine.

(23)

A.The United States is quite rich in natural resources.

B.The Americans are the people with knowledge and skills from many countries.

C.The young Americans are well-educated to value the importance of cooperation.

D.The workingman is now enjoying the wonderful life he achieved through struggle.

Child labor—the employment of children in industry, often against their will—has been a pr
oblem for many-years. Over a hundred years ago, Charles Dickens shocked many readers when he described the conditions under which young children worked in British factories. The conditions Dickens described continue almost unchanged today in many parts of the world. The only difference is that today employment of children is confined to small industries and family businesses.

Girls suffer more from child labor practices than boys. Many of them are forced. to start work when they are only ten years old. Although the work they are given to do is often light, it is often harmful to the health. Recently, children as young as six years were found to be working in Asian factories, and the children were working from eight to fourteen hours a day in overcrowded and unhealthy working conditions. Sometimes a whole family group is employed, with the payment going to a parent or elder relative, the children not only receive nothing or very little for their long hours of work, but also they are prevented from attending school. Therefore, when they become older they are unable to do any other kind of work.

The solution to the problem of child labor is clearly better laws to protect young children, greater supervision of industry and heavier fines for those who break the laws. Only in this way cart young boys and girls be allowed to enjoy the most valuable time of their lives —childhood.

The conditions under which young children work______ .

A.are similar to those a hundred years ago

B.are even worse than those a hundred years ago

C.have improved since a hundred years ago

D.are exactly the same as those a hundred years ago

听力原文: Today school children in many countries have high rates of failing eyesight. Two methods have been proposed to prevent near-sightedness, one Western and one Chinese. The Western method was developed by Mr. Bates, a British actor, in the early part of last century. He trained people to relax their eyes frequently during a period of intense reading. His methods included covering open eyes with the palms of the hands and looking at distant objects by moving the eyes from side to side instead of staring at them. Bates also encouraged school children to look frequently at a calendar on the wall of the classroom to relax their eyes. A famous British writer even wrote a book on the beneficial effects of the Bates' method for his vision.

The traditional Chinese method involves pressing certain points around the eyes with the fingers. This also relaxes excessive tension in eye muscles, it is best done by doctors trained in traditional Chinese medicine, but it can also be done by students themselves.

Teachers and parents should encourage pupils to relax their eyes frequently while reading and studying.
