听力原文: My parents ran a small restaurant. The restaurant was opened 24 hours a day, seven days a week. [32] And my first job when I was six years old was shining shoes for customers. My duties increased as I grew older. By age of ten I was cleaning tables and washing plates. My father made it clear that I had to meet certain standards. [33] I had to be on time, hard-working and polite to the customers. I was never paid for any work I did. [34] One day I made a mistake of telling Dad I thought he should give me 10 pounds a week. He said, "OK, then how about you paying me for the three meals a day when you eat here and for the times you bring in your friends for free drinks?" [35] He figured I owed him about 40 pounds a week. This taught me quite a lot.

"I love you, Bob." "I love you, too, Nancy." It was 2 a.m. and I was hearing my parents' v
oices through the thin wall separating my bedroom from theirs. Their loving words were sweet, touching— and surprising.

My parents married on September 14,1940, alter a brief dating. She was nearly 30 and knew it was time to 'start a family. The handsome, well-educated man wh0 came by the, office where she worked looked like a good bet. He was attracted by her figure, her blue eyes. The romance didn't last long.

Seeds of difference grew almost immediately. She liked to travel; he hated the thought. He loved golf; she did not. He was a Republican, she a loyal Democrat. They fought at the bridge table, at the dinner table, over money, over the perceived shortcomings of their respective in-laws.

There was a hope that they would change once they retired, and the angry winds did calm somewhat, but what remained changed itself into bright, hard bitterness. "I always thought we'd..." my mother would begin, before launching into a precise listing of my father's faults. The complaints were recited so often, I can repeat them by heart today. As he listened, my father would say angry threats and curses in a low voice.

It wasn't the happiest marriage, but as their 602 anniversary(纪念日)approached, my sister and I decided to throw a party. Sixty years was a long time, after alit why not try to make the best of things? We'd provide the cake, the balloons, the toasts, and they'd follow one rule: no fighting.

The agreement was honored. We had a wonderful day. When we thought back, we found it was an important celebration, because soon after, things began to change for my parents.

Bob married Nancy because of______.

A.her nice appearance

B.her good education

C.her romantic nature

D.her position as an office girl

Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.

I was raised speaking English, but I also spoke Spanish at home. When I went to school for the first time, I was enrolled in ESL classes—classes for English as a Second Language. I was also put into the Limited English Proficiency Program. In all these classes, I always got the highest grades. I was the best reader and speaker. There was no reason for me to be in any of those classes.

When my parents discovered that I was ha those classes instead of in regular classes with other English-speaking students, they went to the school administration to complain about the discrimination. The school had nothing to say. My parents tried to get me out of the ESI classes, but the school fought very hard to keep me there. And then we found out why—for every student the school had in the ESI. and the Limited English Proficiency Program, they would receive $ 400. This was pretty devastating (令人震惊的). The school's only excuse for keeping me there was that I lived in a Spanish-speaking household, and that I 'was influenced by the way my parents spoke. My parents were outraged, but I remained in the ESL and the Limited English Proficiency Program until I was in the fifth grade.

Then my parents transferred me to another school where they had friends. The new school gave me an English proficiency test. I aced (考得好,写得好) it. So I didn't have to attend those programs for non-native English speakers. I was finally on the right track and back at the head of the class. The first school I had attended would have never let me out of those programs or even let me take the test. I was too "Spanish" for them.

The author thought he should attend______.

A.an ESL class

B.regular English classes

C.the Limited English Proficiency Program

D.the class for non-native English speakers

听力原文: A lot of parents do not realize how important the emotional aspect of the relationship is. It determines their children's performance. I recently heard a mother discussing what school her child might get into. She said, "I don't know how bright my son is." She said that as if her son's intelligence was an independent fate, like the color of the boy's eyes.

Many parents are frequently bothered by their children's marks at school. Their relationship with the child is almost wholly built around this. It was not at all like that with my dad. Until I was eight, he did not seem to worry about marks. And, after that, it was never exam performance that he was concerned about. Rather, he concentrated on my self-understanding. He constantly showed me that I was not stupid by pointing out things I had said that were signs of intelligence. This gave me self-respect. I kept failing exams. But, my father thought there was a difference between my failing one exam and whether I would be a success or failure in life.

Money can be used as a substitute for love for children of divorcees or of rich parents. It can also be used with school performance. Especially in the present exam-crazed system, parents can easily forget the point of education: it is to create fulfilled, creative adults, not exam-takers. If they show love conditionally on performance, it is a cause of depression.

(30)

A.The mother does not enjoy the performance of her son.

B.The mother does not like to communicate with her son.

C.The mother does not like her son.

D.The mother is short of emotions towards her son.

听力原文:Man: So, how did the school football competition go on Saturday? Sorry I didn't turn up to help, but I had so much to do, you know how it is.

Woman: Oh, don't worry-luckily some of the other parents came along to help. We just didn't attract as many teams as we thought we would, and I thought the whole thing lacked any excitement as a result. You know, of course, that the point was to raise some money to pay for new trees in the school grounds? Well, we achieved that, and my kids thought the whole afternoon was great, so I guess it was OK.

You overhear two people talking about a school football competition. What did the woman think of the event?

A.She didn't think anyone had enjoyed it.

B.It managed to fulfil its aims.

C.Not enough people had helped to set it up.

听力原文:W: Are you going to find a job again this summer?

M: Yes, of course. Otherwise, how am I going to pay for the tuition fees in the fall?

W: I am thinking of working too, but my folks insist I have to spend some time with them during the summer. You know', I haven't seen them for two years.

M: That's considering you are only an eight-hour drive away from your hometown. Why haven't you been home for so long?

W: It's not that I didn't want to go home but because my parents were volunteering in the charitable organization in Central America for the last couple of years.

M: In that case, maybe you should visit them in the summer.

W: That's true, but I didn't want to spend the whole summer staying at home. I want to make some money and pay off my tuition fees too.

M: Well, you can get a loan.

W: Loan? I hate the idea of borrowing. I would rather make my own money and pay it off.

M: That's true. It's not uncommon for people to have high bills to pay once they've graduated.

W: Yes, that's exactly what I didn't want to get myself into.

M: Well, you can work part-time when you are at home.

W: I was thinking about that but my parents thought I should be at home with them full-time.

M: Well, I think you do have to make a decision.

(1)

A.She wants to find a job in this summer to pay for tuition fees.

B.She lives far away from her parents.

C.She will have no time to visit her parents in this summer.

D.She doesn't miss her parents.
