SECTION B PASSAGES

Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: In the early 1960s a new sound was heard, very different from anything, which had so far come from the American side of the Atlantic. This was the Liverpool, or northwestern "beat". Situated on the river Mersey in the northeastern comer of the industrial Blank Country, Liverpool was not a place that anyone visited for fun. Until the 1960s it was known only as one of Britain's largest ports. Then, overnight, it became world famous as the birth place of the new pop culture which, in a few years, swept across Britain and America, and most countries of the Western world.

The people responsible for the pop revolution were four Liverpool boys who called themselves The Beatles. They played in small clubs in the back streets of the city. Unlike the famous solo stars who had their songs written for them, The Beatles wrote their own words and music.

Some pop groups, in particular the Rolling Stones, did more than just entertain. They wrote words that were deliberately intended to shock. They represented the anger and bitterness of youth struggling for freedom against authority.

The Beatles finally won the affection and admiration of people of all ages and social backgrounds. Their songs became more serious. They wrote not only of love, but also of death and old age and poverty and daily life. They were respected by many intellectuals and by some serious musicians, largely thanks to The Beatles, pop music has grown into an immense and profitable industry.

Which of the following is NOT true about Liverpool?

A.It is located on the river Mersey.

B.It is the birthplace of lots of musicians and intellectuals.

C.It is one of Britain's largest ports.

D.It is the birthplace of the new pop culture.

SECTION B PASSAGES

Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: The young executive weaving through the traffic in his BMW, one hand on the steering wheel, the other holding a telephone, has become a familiar sight on our city streets. It doesn't look safe an it isn't. It is not just that the serious discussion he is having is distracting. There' s also the tangled cable by the gear lever and the fact that he' s only got one hand free if someone suddenly steps off the kerb.

Car phones have been available in Britain since 1959 but have only become common since January 1985 when two "cellular" systems were introduced. These are licensed by the Government and take advantage of new technology and ultra-high radio frequencies. About 25000 subscribers were expected in the first year of operation but the actual figure for 1985 was more than double that. It is estimated that 75000 cellular phones were then in use, and there were well over 100000 by the end of 1986.

The Highway Code has been rewritten to include a warning that drivers should not using hand-held telephones when the car is moving. Because the drivers may concentrate more on their phone-work than the road ahead. Authority warns that those who drive and talk into a telephone will be prosecuted.

Which of the statements do you think could not cause a driver to have an accident?

A.Talking to another person while driving.

B.Holding a telephone in one hand while driving.

C.Not keeping both hands on the steering wheel while driving.

D.Driving without any shoes on.

根据下面内容,回答题:

Many children do not go to school either because their parents want them at home as carers for siblings, or simply because their parents cannot be bothered to send them. Thousands more are not registered at any school at all, because of their families" unstable lives.

Underlying this dreadful situation there are two central truths. First of all, the problem of children not going to school often has more to do with their parents than with the children themselves. Secondly, once children go to school, we need to make sure that the experience is a positive one so that they want to keep on going.

In Britain, the Ministry of Education has introduced a complex package of sticks and carrots to persuade schools to bring truants (children who do not go to school when they should) and excluded children back into the classroom. It is paying grants so that a thousand schools can set up special units to help these children. Schools receive the grant if they bring a target number of children back to school; if they do not meet th:e target, the grant is withdrawn. Parents are the subject of this campaign, too: the Home Office has introduced fines for parents who fail to send their children to school, and has given the police power to pick up truants on the streets.

According to the text, there are thousands of children who________. 查看材料

A.live in stable families

B.walk around on the streets

C.are not registered at any school

D.stay at home doing the housework
