听力原文: Today, air travel is far safer than driving a car on a busy motorway. But there is a danger that grows every year.

From the moment an airplane takes off to the moment it lands, every movement is watched on radar screens. Air traffic controllers tell the pilot exactly when to turn, when to climb and when to come down. The air traffic controllers around a busy airport may handle 1000 planes a day. Any plane the flies near the airport comes under the orders of the controllers there. Even a small mistake on their part could cause a disaster.

Recently such a disaster almost happened. Two large jets were flying towards the airport. One was carrying 69 passengers and had come from Toronto. The other was carrying 176 passengers from Chicago. An air traffic controller noticed on his radar screen that the two planes were too close to each other. He ordered one to turn to the right and to climb. But he made a mistake. He ordered the wrong plane to do this. So, instead of turning away from the second plane, the first plane turned towards it. Fifteen seconds later it flew directly in front of the second plane. They avoided each other by the smallest part of a second. The distance between them was less than that of a large swimming pool. This is an example of the danger that grows every year.

(23)

A.Crowded air traffic.

B.The large size of airplanes.

C.Mistakes by air traffic controllers.

D.Bad weather.

Section B

Directions: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice.

People can be addicted to different things —e.g., alcohol, drugs, certain foods, or even television. People who have such an addiction are compulsive (强迫性的): i.e., they have a very powerful psychological need that they feel they must satisfy.According to psychologists, many people are compulsive spenders, They feel that they must spend money. This compulsion, like most others, is irrational —impossible to explain reasonably. For compulsive spenders who buy on credit (赊欠), charge accounts (赊购账户) are even more exciting than money. In other words, compulsive spenders feel that with credit they can do anything. Their pleasure in spending enormous amounts is actually greater than the pleasure that they get from the things they buy.

There is even a special psychology of bargain (特价商品) hunting. To save money, of course, most people look for sales, low prices, and discounts. Compulsive bargain hunters, however, often buy things that they don't need just because they are cheap. They want to believe that they are helping their budgets, but they are really playing an exciting game. When they can buy something for less than other people, they feel they are winning. Most people, experts claim, have two reasons for their behavior. a good reason for the things they do and the real reason.

It is not only scientists, of course, who understand the psychology of spending habits, but also businesspeople. Stores, companies and advertisers use psychology to increase business: They consider people's needs for love, power, or influence, their basic values, their beliefs and opinions, and so on in their advertising and sales method.

Psychologists often use a method called "behavior. therapy" (疗法) to help individuals solve their personality problems. In the same way, they can help people who feel that they have problems with money.

Note: Please put down on Answer Sheet 2 your answers to the following questions.

According to the psychologists, a compulsive spender is one who spends large amounts of money ______.

A.and takes great pleasure from what he or she buys

B.in order to satisfy his or her basic needs in life

C.just to meet his or her strong psychological need

D.entirely with an irrational eagerness
