听力原文: No one is sure how many Americans belong to reading groups called book clubs. Yet publishers and bookstores report that more and more people throughout the United States are joining them.
(32)Most of the clubs work the same way. Members read the same book at the same time. Then they meet to talk about the book. Members may be friends or people who live near each other. Or, they may be people who work together. Some book clubs develop from other organizations. Religious and community groups often establish book clubs. Some Americans belong to reading groups on the computer service known as the Internet. These groups include people around the world who communicate about books they read. (33)These people send electronic mail instead of meeting to discuss books. Book clubs may be for only women or only men. Or, they can be for husbands and wives together. Some are family groups where parents attend with their children. Children may belong to book clubs of their own. (34)Most reading groups study books by a number of writers. However, some groups read the work of a single writer, usually one that has been famous for a while. (35) Other groups may be named for an important person in the work of the write, like a Sherlock Holmes Club. Holmes is the great British crime investigator created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Members of these book clubs often are experts about their chosen reading materials. For example, one member of a Holmes reading group can identify almost every person in every Sherlock Holmes story.

听力原文: "Where is the university?" is a question many visitors to Cambridge ask, but no one could point them in any one direction because there is no campus. The university consists of thirty - one self - governing colleges. It has lecture halls, libraries, laboratories, museums and offices throughout the city.
Individual colleges choose their own students, who have to meet the minimum entrance requirements set by the university. Undergraduates usually live and study in their colleges, where they are taught in very small groups. Lectures, and laboratory and practical work are organized by the university and held in university buildings.
The university has a huge number of buildings for teaching and research. It has more than sixty specialist subject libraries, as well as the University Library, which, as a copyright library, is entitled to a copy of every book published in Britain.
Examinations are set and degrees are awarded by the university. It allowed women to take the university exams in 1881, but it was not until 1948 that they ,were a warded degrees.

听力原文: A dictionary lists the words of a language, usually arranged in alphabetical order, but sometimes also by topic, with their meanings or their equivalents.
The first important contribution to lexicography in the United States was The American Spelling Book, issued by educator and lexicographer Noah Webster. Although not a true dictionary, The American Spelling Book, because of its American origin and its simplification of English, became a household reference wordbook throughout the United States. Its success led Webster to compile A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language. He then concentrated on his major contribution to lexicography, An American Dictionary of the English Language, begun in 1807 and published in 1828. This ambitious work included 12,000 more words and 40,000 more definitions than any previous dictionary of the English language. Despite its emphasis on typically American usage, distinguished from British usage, this work was never popular.
Webster's International Dictionary appeared in 1890; Webster's New International Dictionary appeared in 1909. The second edition of Webster's New International Dictionary, published in 1934, remains impressive today, with 600,000 entries. Webster's Third New International Dictionary of the English Language was made available to the public in 1961, which included many slang words and technical terms, end its pronunciation schemes indicate regional speech patterns. Many critics denounced it for what they considered its failure to uphold traditional standards, and many defended it energetically as a comprehensive and accurate depiction of its material.

Famous American Foods
What, besides children, connects mothers around the world and across the seas of time? It's chicken soup, one prominent American food expert says.
From Russian villages to Africa and Asia, chicken soup has been the remedy for those weak in body and spirit. Mothers passed their knowledge on to ancient writers of Greece, China and Rome, and even 12th century philosopher and physician Moses Maimonides extolled (赞美)its virtues.
Among the ancients, Aristotle thought poultry should stand in higher estimation than four-legged animals because the air is less dense than the earth. Chickens got another boost (吹捧)in the Book of Genesis, where it is written that birds and fish were created on the fifth day, a day before four-legged animals.
But according to Mimi Sheraton, who has spent much of the past three years exploring the world of chicken soup, much of the reason for chicken's real or imagined curative (治愈的)powers comes from its color.
Her new book, "The Whole World Loves Chicken Soup", looks at the beloved and mysterious brew, with dozens of recipes from around the world. Throughout the ages, she said, "There has been a lot of feeling that white-colored foods are easier to eat for the weak woman and the ill".
In addition, "soups, or anything for that matter eaten with a spoon" are considered "comfort foods" Sheraton said. "I love soup and love making soup and as I was collecting recipes I began to see this as an international dish. It has a universal mystique as something curative, a strength builder," Sheraton said from her New York home.
Her book treats the oldest remedy as if it was brand new.
The National Broiler Council, the trade group representing the chicken industry, reported that 51 percent of the people it surveyed said they bought chicken because it was healthier, 50 percent said it was versatile, 41 percent said it was economical and 46 percent said it was low in fat.
Which of the following can be the best title of the passage? ______
A.Prominent American Foods
B.History of the Chicken Soup
C.Chicken Soup Recipes
D.Chicken Soup, a Universal Cure-All
