听力原文: The use of illegal drugs by U.S. teenagers has increased in the past two years, according to the latest survey by University of Michigan researchers. The increase reverses a downward trend in drug use among teenagers that began in the late 1970s.

Results of a survey of 50,000 eighth, tenth and twelfth graders throughout the United States indicated a sharp rise in the use of drugs. The researchers also noted an increase in the percentage of students who smoke cigarettes, a drop in the percentage of students who drink alcohol, and no change in cocaine use, which remained at a low level.

Although the general rise in the use of drugs is disturbing, the numbers are still far below the recorded high level of drug use in the 1970s.

A consistent drop in drug use, such as the one that occurred be- fore the recent rise, can't be taken for granted, because each generation of American youth has almost no knowledge of drugs and has to learn the same hard lessons.

(26)

A.A slight drop in the use of cocaine.

B.A drop in the use of cigarettes.

C.A sharp rise in the use of drugs.

D.A rise in the use of alcohol.

听力原文: On Feb 15th, 1989, an instant survey was carried out among 18 overseas postgraduate students. Eleven students were male and seven were female. The purpose of the survey was to discover the views of the students on a number of matters of personal concern. The survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire given to the students to complete. There were five questions. The first question concerned favorite color and the .second favorite number. The next 3 questions were all concerned with aspects of marriage. No. 3 looked at the ideal age to get married, No. 4 examined the qualities looked for in a partner and No. 5 asked about the ideal number of children. The main findings were as follows: Blue was the most popular color. This was followed by Green and Purple. There was no real significance in the choice of lucky numbers. About one third of the students said that they had none. Sixty-one percent of the students selected the age group 26 to 30 years as ideal for marriage, followed by 21 to 25 years. In looking for the most important qualities in an ideal partner, someone hoped the person to be Intelligent, others chose Natural, and still others indicated Attractive and Honest. The ideal number of children was 2, followed by 3. It is not easy to reach any definite conclusions based upon such a small sample of students from such widely different backgrounds. However, it is clear that majority favorite of 26 to 30 is the ideal age to get married with an intelligent partner, thereby producing 2 children.

The Changing Middle Class

The United States perceives itself to be a middle-class nation. However, middle class is not a real designation, nor does it carry privileges. It is more of a perception, which probably was as true as it ever could be right after World War II. The economy was growing, more and more people owned their own homes, workers had solid contracts with the companies that employed them, and nearly everyone who wanted a higher education could have one. Successful people enjoyed upward social mobility. They may have started out poor, but they could become rich. Successful people also found that they had greater geographic mobility. In other words, they found themselves moving to and living in a variety of places.

The middle class collectively holds several values and principles. One strong value is the need to earn enough money to feel that one can determine one&39;s own economic fate. In addition,middle-class morality embraces principles of individual responsibility, importance of family, obligations to others, and believing in something outside oneself.

But in the 1990s those in the middle class found that there was a price for success. A U. S.News & World Report survey in 1994 indicated that 75 percent of Americans believed that middle-class families could no longer make ends meet. Both spouses now worked, as did some of the children;long commutes became routine; the need for child care put strains on the family; and public schools were not as good as they once were. Members of the middle class were no longer financing their lifestyles through earnings but were using credit to stay afloat. The understanding of just what middle class meant was changing.

听力原文: The piano and violin are girls' instruments. Drums and trumpets are for boys. According to Psychologists Susan O' Neil and Michael Bottome, children have very clear ideas about which musical instruments they should play. They found that despite the best efforts of teachers, these ideas have changed very little over the past decade. They interviewed 153 children, aged between 9 and 11, from schools in northwest England. They asked them to identify four musical instruments and then say which they would like to play most and which they would least like to play. They also asked the children for their views on whether boys or girls should not play any of the four instruments. The piano and violin were both ranked more favorably by girls than by boys, while boys preferred the drums and trumpets. There was a broad agreement between boys and girls on which instruments each sex should play and the reasons varied. And while almost half of all boys said they avoided certain instruments because they were too difficult to play. Only 15 percent of girls gave that as a reason. Earlier studies indicated that very young school children aged between 5 and 7, showed no bias in choosing musical instruments. But their tastes become more clear between the ages of 8 and 10. One survey of 78 teachers suggested that after that age, both boys and girls begin to restrict themselves to the so-called male or female instruments.

How many children did Susan and Michael interview?

A.150.

B.151.

C.152.

D.153.
