Some Unusual Celebrations

Some holidays are well-known all around the world. Among them are New Year&39;s Eve celebra-tions. Also common are days in honor of love and friendship, like Valentine&39;s Day. Each country has itsown special holidays, too, often to mark important events in its history. Schools, banks, and govern-ment offices all close on days like these. (46)A few of them are really very strange.

Of course. they are not strange to the people who celebrate them. Perhaps that is because the cele-brations have long traditions. Consider April Fool&39;s Day,for example. On thisday, people play practical jokes. _(47)The ones who laugh are the ones playing the jokes. Thepeople they fool often get angry. Does celebrating this day make sense to you?

Dyngus Day in Poland seems strange, too. On this day,it is traditional for boys to pour water overthe heads of girls. Here is the strangest part : They do it to girls they like.

Other unusual celebrations take place in a single city or town. A holiday called La Tomatina is cel-ebrated in Bunol, Spain. Every year,in Jate August, big trucks carry more than 200, 000 pounds of to-matoes into this little town. (48)For two hours, people in the streets throw tomatoes at eachother. Everyone ends up red from head to toe.

August 10 marks the start of the Puck Fair,an Irish festival with a very unusual tradition. Peoplefrom the town of Killorglin go up into the mountains and catch a wild goat. (49)

There are also some celebrations that are really strange. In the United States, sometimes one per-son gets an idea for a new holiday and tries to get others to accept it. Whose idea was Public SleepingDay? That one is on February 28 It may seem strange, but it sounds like more fun than the one onFebruary (50)

Do you like the idea of inventing a new holiday? If you do,then you will want to mark March 26 on your calendar. That is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day

Valentine’s Day probably has its origin in the ancient Roman celebration called Lupercalia(牧神节). It was celebrated on February 15. In the Roman calendar February was in the spring. The celebration honored the gods Lupercus and Faunus as well as the twin brothers Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. As part of the ceremony the priests paired up young men and women. The girls’ names were placed in a box and each boy drew a girl’s name. The couple was paired then until the next Lupercalia. In 260 AD the emperor Claudius II, called Claudius the Cruel, decided that young soldiers would only be distracted by marriage and so ordered that young men may not marry. Valentinus (Valentine), a Christian priest, defied the emperor and got married in secret. He was caught and executed(处死)on February 14, the eve of Lupercalia. His name became associated with young lover forever after. In 496, Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor him as Saint Valentine and it has been St. Valentine’s Day ever since. In the Middle Ages some of the customs of the Lupercalia still persisted in spite of the attempts of the Church to put an end to these non-Christian customs and Christianize the holiday. Both men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear the names on their sleeves for a week. Today we still sometimes “wear our hearts on our sleeves” when we cannot conceal our feelings. In the 1600s, it became common to give flowers, particularly the rose, as a sign of love as the “language of flowers”. This came to Europe from Turkey. The color and placement of the rose held a special significance—a red rose, for example, meant beauty. Flowers have been part of Valentine’s Day ever since. The day February 14 has been St. Valentine’s Day since .

A、260 AD

B、the founding of Rome

C、the Middle Ages

D、496 AD

Parenting is not an easy task. Becoming a parent is the easiest part, whereas, being a conscious and positive parent is a momentous task. Parenting is the most important role one faces in a lifetime. Parents who provide an encouraging environment for their children are rewarded when, as adults, their children realize a successful fit into the culture and society. Parenting concepts are deeply rooted in the majority of families in that country, because of a strong, sustained tradition of educating and training young parents to accept, perform and establish enduring relationships and responsibilities with their children. Generally, the young mother is introduced to the nuances of parenting by way of the “hands on” method at her parental home, and under the guidance of her mother or an experienced family member. This practice could be the reason why the need for professional parent education usually is not expressed. Effective parenting enables children to build and develop positive behavior and good, solid self-concepts that are important for functioning fully as a healthy adult. Parenting, as such, is greatly dependent on intra-familiar issues that play a significant role in parental performance. However, parenting skills can be strengthened if parents learn about themselves as a “parent” and about children’s development. Learning about the stages of human development helps parents understand about their ever changing roles in the lives of their children and also what is expected of a parent at each stage. Finally, a father’s love and influence is as important as a mother’s in the life of a child. Fathers should overcome the internal and external barriers that exist to fulfill the duties of fathering. “Nuances” in the second paragraph means .

A、very slight things

B、very basic things

C、very important things

D、very special things
