l You depend on all the people closely around to give you the warm feeling of belongingness (归属)that you must have to feel secure But, in fact, the members of all the groups to which you belong also depend on you to give theft feeling to them. l2 The need for companionship is closely related to the need for a sense of belongingness. How sad and lonely your life would be if you had no one to share your feelings and experiences. You may take it for granted that there will always be people around ,to talk to and to do things with you and for you. The important point, however, is that keeping emotionally healthy does not depend so much upon having people around you as upon your ability to establish relationships that are sat- isfy&39;ing both to you and to them.
l3 Suppose you are in a crowd watching a football game. You don&39;t know them. When the game is over, you will all go your separate ways. But just for a while you had a feeling of companion- ship, of sharing the feelings of others who were cheering for the team you wanted to win.
l4 An experience of this kind gives the clue (线索) to what companionship really is. It depends upon emotional ties of sympathy, understanding, trust, and affection. Companions become friends when these ties are formed.

The origins(起源) of baseball probably stretch back to 1839 when Abner Doubleday, a civil engineering student, laid out a diamond-shaped field at Cooperstown, New York, and attempted to standardize(使标准化) the rules governing the playing of such games as town ball and four old cat, the ancestors(祖先) of baseball. By the end of the Civil War, interest in the game had grown rapidly. Over 200 teams or clubs existed, some of which toured the country playing rivals; they belonged to a national association of "Baseball Players" that had proclaimed(宣布) a set of standard rules. These teams were amateurs(业余爱好者) or semi-professionals, but as the game waxed in popularity, it offered opportunities for profit, and the first professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings, appeared in 1869. Other cities soon fielded professional teams, and in 1876 the present National League was organized chiefly by Albert Spalding. Soon a rival league appeared, the American Association. Competition between the two was intense, and in 1883 they played a post-season(季后赛) contest, the first "world's series". The American Association eventually collapsed, but in 1900 the American League was organized.
