How to approach Writing Test Part Two
?Part Two counts for two thirds of the total marks in the Writing Test.
?You should spend about 30 minutes on Part Two.
?You will be asked to write a report, proposal or piece of business correspondence.
?You will be given information, such as a letter, advertisement, or charts and graphs, as the starting point for your answer, and will be told who to write to.
?About five 'handwritten' notes will also be given. You must use all these notes when writing your answer, and will need to invent information in connection with some of them. If you leave out any of the five notes, you will lose marks.
Planning
?Read the instructions carefully so that you know what do, and underline the key words.
?Make an outline plan, putting the five notes into a suitable order.
Writing
?Start your answer by briefly saying why you are writing.
?Express your ideas clearly.
?Try to use a wide range of appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures.
?For a piece of business correspondence, include suitable openings and closings (e.g. Dear Ms Smith and Yours sincerely with your signature), but no addresses.
?Do not present a report or proposal in the form. of a letter.
?Make the formality of the language suitable for the reader(s).
Checking
?After writing, read what you have written, correct mistakes and make improvements. If you want to add anything, use a sign, e.g. *. Put a line through anything you want to omit. Don't rewrite the whole of your answer.
?Hake sure the examiner will be able to read your answer. Use a pen and your normal handwriting (do not write in capital letters).
?Check that you have written your answer in 120 140 words.
?You work for a small chain of clothing stores. The Managing Director has asked you to write a short report on last month's performance.
?Look at the charts and table below, on which you have already made some handwritten notes.
?Then, using all your handwritten notes, write the report for your Managing Director
?Write 120- 140 words.
Even so, the Gulf War was a relatively straightforward confrontation. It was against a known enemy over a clear-cut matter of principle and fought by means that played to the West' s comparative advantages, for example in air power. To defense planners, this was much to be preferred to the considerably more complicated types of conflict where opponents merged easily into their surroundings, and adopted guerrilla warfare rather than open battle.
Prudent defense planners never want to get involved in messy civil wars, while the military dislikes having to get between warring groups. It is usually easier to get in than out of these conflicts. Yet even as troops were returning from the Gulfin the summer of 1991, Yugoslavia was starting to fall apart. By 1992, British and French forces were being deployed in Bosnia, along with contingents from other countries, to try to deliver humanitarian aid and soften the blows of a bitter ethnic conflict. Eventually, in 1995, now joined by the Americans, they began to take a much tougher line and this created the conditions for a political settlement, although not an early withdrawal of outside forces. They were still needed to keep the peace.
The experience of these conflicts illustrates some of the difficulties now faced by defense planners. They must prepare for a wide range of operations, from set-piece battles to vicious inter-communal skirmishes: Even though they may hope that total wars are things of the past for the major industrialized countries, limited wars might still require the sort of capabilities once assumed to be relevant only to total wars. Limited wars also come in all shapes and sizes. In 1982 the Falklands War was won through achieving naval superiority followed by an amphibious landing, while in 1991 Kuwait was liberated through air supremacy followed by a heavy armored advance. The first stage of the Gulf crisis involved a naval blockade -- the last stage involved light forces protecting Kurds. Bosnia involved a hybrid force of infantry geared to a low-intensity conflict supported by ak power conducting a high-intensity campaign. Future conflicts might involve direct attacks on environmental targets or attempts to exploit the West's growing dependence on information technology. Terrorism and international criminal organizations are now often presented as the most serious threats to Western societies.
From the sentence "This brought home the lesson that in a world in which total war had become too horrific to contemplate even a limited war was no small matter and would demand considerable commitment.", we know that______.
A.the world has realized that a limited war was a piece of cake and demanded no matter
B.the people urged to launch a limited war
C.the world has realized that even a limited war was still terrible and needed to do a lot of things to finish it
D.people were afraid to begin a limited war so the have done a lot of things to prevent it
National Treasure A large-scale cultural exploration program National Treasure was recently launched by China's Central Television (CCTV) in Beijing. This TV program, which showcases the history of many of China's cultural relics, has become a huge hit. The weekly program, "National Treasure" was first aired by CCTV on December 3, 2017. Across 10 episodes, a total of 27 national treasures from nine major Chinese museums were presented. This program brings these relics to life and displays their unique beauty through different artistic methods. The opening episode showed three of China’s finest cultural treasures from the Palace Museum in Beijing: the painting "A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains," the Large Vase with Variegated Glazes and a stone drum. Famous actors Li Chen, Wang Kai and Tony Leung played the “national treasure guardians” of each item. They told not only the mysteries behind the treasures but also their own stories about them. Yu Lei, chief producer of the program, said “As a cultural show, National Treasure aims to make ancient relics come alive. We want our viewers to feel that the cultural relics are like people and that they have their own personalities and lives.” She added, “People’s interest in culture as well as the tradition and workmanship of the Chinese nation has become a trend. This has encouraged us to better promote our fine culture. We hope through the program, more and more people will go into museums to enjoy the beauty of relics.” CCTV cultural programs, such as Chinese Poetry Competition and The Reader, have already won much acclaim from audiences and the year 2017 is gradually regarded as a starting year of cultural programs. Back to tradition and the spirit of craftsman have become hot topics in modern society. Decide whether the following statements are true (T) or false (F) according to the text. National Treasure is not a large-scale cultural exploration program.
听力原文: A recent study reveals higher education tends to speed up mental decline and leave elderly people at a loss for words.
Participants in the study were all more than 70 years old. They were tested up to four times between 1993 and 2000 on their ability to remember 10 common words read aloud to them. The most educated test subjects were found to experience a steeper decline during the years in remembering the list.
Individuals with a better education seem to have a higher starting point in their word memory, and so may initially remember more total words than their less educated peers.
The more education one has, the more words one will know to begin with. It appears the more you know, the more you have to lose.
The explanation for the faster decline of more educated individuals could possibly be they were unable to access memory tricks they once relied on to help them remember things. For a while, these strategies can help them compensate, but as they get older, their brains become overwhelmed and they can no longer use those strategies.
Because the study didn't follow people across their entire life spans, there could be other unseen factors. For example, those with less education may start their cognitive decline earlier.
The possibly protective nature against conditions like dementia could be due to a correlation between higher education and generally higher living standards, like access to better health care and better eating habits. The things that make a healthy body make a healthy mind.
