Making Light of Sleep

All we have a clock located inside our brains. Similar to your bedside alarm clock, your intemal clock runs on a 24-hour cycle.-This cycle, called a circadian rhythm, helps control when you wake, when you eat and when you sleep.
Somewhere around puberty, something happens in the timing of the biological clock. The clock pushes forward, so adolescents and teenagers are unable to fall asleep as early as they used to. When your mother tells you it&39;s time for bed, your body may be pushing you to stay up for several hours more.
And the light coming from your computer screen or TV could be pushing you to stay up even later.
This shift is natural for teenagers. But staying up very late and sleeping late can get your body&39;s clock out of sync with the cycle of light and dark. It can also make it hard to get out of bed in the morning and may bring other problems, too. Teenagers are put in a kind of a gray cloud when they don&39;t get enough sleep, says Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at BrownUniversity. It affects their mood and their ability to think and learn.
But just like your alarm clock, your internal clock can be reset. In fact, it automatically resets itself every day. How? By using the light it gets through your eyes. Scientists have known for a long time that the light of day and the dark of night play important roles in setting our internal clocks. For years, researchers thought that the signals that synchronize the body&39;s clock were handled through the same pathways that we use to see.
But recent discoveries show that the human eye has two separate light-sensing systems. One system allows us to see. The second system tells our body whether it&39;s day or night.

The clock located inside our brains is similar to our bedside alarm clock because __________. 查看材料

A.it controls when we wake, when we eat and when we sleep

B.it has a cycle of 24 hours

C.it is a cycle also called circadian rhythm

D.it can alarm any time during 24 hours

Sleep is a funny thing. We're taught that we should get seven or eight hours a night, but
a lot of us get by just fine on less, and some of us actually sleep too much. A study out of the University of Buffalo last month reported that people who routinely sleep more than eight hours a day and are still tired are nearly three times as likely to die of stroke—probably as a result of an underlying disorder that keeps them from snoozing soundly.

Doctors have their own special sleep problems. Residents are famously sleep deprived. When I was training to become a doctor, it was not unusual to work 40 hours in a row without rest. Most of us took it in stride, confident we could still deliver the highest quality of medical care.

Maybe we shouldn't have been so sure of ourselves. An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association points out that in the morning after 24 hours of sleeplessness, a person's motor performance is comparable to that of someone who is legally intoxicated. Curiously, surgeons who believe that operating under the influence is grounds for dismissal often don't think twice about operating without enough sleep.

"I could tell you horror stories", says Jaya Agrawal, president of the American Medical Student Association, which runs a website where residents can post anonymous anecdotes. Some are terrifying. "I was operating after being up for over 36 hours", one writes. "I literally fell asleep standing up and nearly face planted into the wound".

"Practically every surgical resident I know has fallen asleep at the wheel driving home from work", writes another. "I know of three who have hit parked cars. Another hit a convenience store on the roadside".

"Your own patients have become the enemy", writes a third", because they are the one thing that stands between you and a few hours of sleep".

Agrawal's organization is supporting the Patient and Physician Safety and Protection Act of 2001, introduced last November by Representative John Conyers Jr. of Michigan. Its key provisions, modeled on New York State's regulations, include an 80-hour workweek and a 24 hour work-shift limit.

Most doctors, however, resist such interference. Dr. Charles Binkley, a senior surgery resident at the University of Michigan, agrees that something needs to be done but believes" doctors should be bound by their conscience, not by the government".

The U.S. controls the hours of pilots and truck drivers. But until such a system is in place for doctors, patients are on their own. If you're worried about the people treating you, you should feel free to ask how many hours of sleep they have had. Doctors, for their part, have to give up their pose of infallibility and get the rest they need.

Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?

A.In a recent scientific research, the scientists points out that someone who sleeps beyond the limit will probably not be in good health.

B.In the United States, the doctors usually do not take their sleep problems seriously.

C.Most doctors agree that the problems should be solved only by way of some compulsory means.

D.The U.S. government has already restricted the doctors' working hours.

g3步枪

A 16-year-old South Dakota boy who became lost while hunting and spent 16 hours alone in the Black Hills National Forest says he was scared but still managed to make a survival plan.

Austin DuVall, of Rapid City, became lost on Nov.3 while hunting with his father. He ran after a deer, and soon found himself alone. “I ran after a deer, but I didn’t get it,” he said. “Then I was really lost.”

He had only his hunting rifle(步枪) and the clothes he was wearing. He had no food or water and had nothing that could help him find his way to safety. “I knew that no one could hear me. I decided to just sleep and get up in the morning and find safety,” he said.

Austin climbed up on a rock and slept through the night. Then he awoke and relied on skills he learned in a hunter safety course. He followed a stream to an occupied cabin. The couple there called his parents and cooked him a breakfast. “ It’s probably one meal I’ll never forget for the rest of my life,” he said.

After DuVall’s disappearance, a lot of emergency officials and more than 100 volunteers went searching for him. “He wasn’t sitting there waiting for someone to come and find him,” said his father, Steve DuVall. “We didn’t find him; he found himself.”

Mike Kintigh, regional supervisor for the Game, Fish & Parks Department, said one or two hunters will go missing each year, but rarely for more than 24 hours. “We’re a little bit unique in the Black Hills as it’s hard to get lost for a very long time. That’s because we’ve got so many roads here compared to the Rocky Mountains,” Kintigh said. “You can certainly spend a very uncomfortable night in the woods like Austin did.”

根据以下资料,回答5~8题。 Pub hours shake-up revealed next week By James Hardy Politica
l Editor PUBS and clubs will be allowed to stay open round-the-clock under a planned radical change of Britain's outdated licensing (许可证发放) laws. Prime Minister Tony Blair yesterday revealed a Bill (议案) to bring in the long-awaited improvement will be contained in the Queen's Speech next week. Some public bars and clubs could be open all hours while others could choose different closing times into the early hours. Police forces around the country have said different closing times will mean the explosion in violence and vandalism (破坏行为) after 11p.m.-when aggressive drunks are sent out at the same time. The move will be opposed by some MPs (下院议员) who fear it will lead to increased alcoholism, drunken behavior. and crime. But ministers say there will be controls on which pubs and clubs are allowed to open 24 hours a day. Places which consistently attract violent drunks and troublemakers will be turned down. Mr.Blair said: "We believe there should be greater flexibility in licensing. In the end, the evidence that we have is that it may help in the fight against anti-social behavior. At the moment the very fixed nature of the hours sometimes means that you get particular problems outside pubs and city centers at particular hours of the evening." The big change will be accompanied by a strict action on petty criminals who cause misery to urban and rural communities. In a bid to prevent criticism of the licensing improvement, the Govenment is to extend on-the-spot fines to a range of offences from vandalism. The PM said yesterday petty crime was the single biggest cause of daily aggressive behavior. for millions. The "Bill" in the second paragraph refers to __. A.some new pubs and clubs will be open B.some pubs and clubs will be closed C.pubs and clubs can be open at different times D.pubs and clubs can be open day and night
