听力原文:Chris: I've heard that you used to work for the BBC, is that true?

Erwin: Yes, that's true. I worked as a news journalist for the World Service, specializing in Africa.

Chris: Then how could you turn to become a dive master in Seychelles?

Erwin: As I've told you, I worked for the World Service in Africa. That was bow I first had the opportunity to visit the Indian Ocean Islands of Seychelles, Mauritius, Comoros and Madagascar-even though I wash't a diver then.

Chris: So over time you developed an interest in diving, right?

Erwin: Yes, over a period of years I fell in love with Seychelles and by the time I came to live there I was an obsessive diver.

Chris: Did you leave the BBC after you went to live in the Seychelles?

Erwin: No. Diving became part of the reason I wanted to live there, but officially I was on loan to the Seychelles Broad casting Corporation from the BBC--helping to train the local radio and TV journalists.

Chris: What prompted you to come back to the UK then?

Erwin: To be frank, I became bored of living on a small island. It was quite a stressful experience in many ways, and the BBC wanted me back.

Why did the man go to Seychelles?

A.Because he likes diving.

B.Because he wanted to find a job as a dive master there.

C.Because he worked for the World Service.

D.Because he was assigned to Madagascar.

第3题
Britain has laws to make sure that women have the same opportunities as men in education,
jobs and training. But it's still unusual to women doing dirty or heavy jobs.

Nancy Florey is a car maintenance engineer in London. She used to be a secretary. Jessica Human, a journalist with The Observer, a Sunday newspaper, asked her why she wanted to work with cars.

"My first reason was independence," she said. "I also wanted to use my hands, and I like learning about how things work. Many people refer to have a woman repair their cars, too. "

Nancy didn't find it easy to become a car maintenance engineer. She went to a Government Skill Center-a special sort of college where people can learn a new job-for twenty weeks. "For ten weeks I was the only woman among four hundred men, and some of them were rude to me, just because of my sex. It was also very tiring -from 8 in the morning to 5 at night, with only 30 minutes for lunch."

Now Nancy works freelance-that is, she's self-employed, working for herself and not for a garage or a company.

Jessica Human also spoke to Marina, who works as a general builder in Sheffield, an industrial town in the north of England. Like Nancy, Marina used to be a secretary. "I didn't enjoy it at all," she said, "I wanted to do more practical work, and I wanted to be self- employed."

Marina joined a women's building co-operative, and she learnt her job from other people and from experience. However, many of the women in her group have been specially trained. Most of the jobs they do are improvements to buildings and general repairs.

"People often say, 'Oh, women aren't strong enough,' but I don't think strength is important," said Marina. "The important thing is to get used to doing a different sort of work."

Marina would like more women to come into the building industry. "Everything built at the moment is a product of man's world, ff women become builders, they will be able to understand the production of their houses and their towns."

According to the passage, what do British laws ensure women?

A.They ensure that women get higher pay than men.

B.They ensure that women enjoy more freedom than men.

C.They ensure that women do whatever they like to do.

D.They ensure that women have equal chances with men in education and work.

听力原文: Do you know America's most famous woman is the Goddess of liberty, i. e. , the S
tatue of Liberty? It was conceived in 1865 by Edouard de Laboulaye and designed by another Frenchman, Frederic Bartoldi. They wanted to honor liberty and friendship.

It was hoped that the monument would be completed by 1876 when America celebrated its centennial. Fund raising and manufacture of the statue in France went slowly. It was 1885 when the 214 crates containing the statue reached New York.

Americans were initially embarrassed for they had not raised the money to pay for the erection of the base. Fund raising by popular subscription was behind schedule. One fund raising method used was to have popular Americans write letters which were then auctioned off. Mark Twain wrote a "tongue-in-cheek" letter suggesting that Miss Liberty didn't deserve a statue.

The base and statue, together 272 feet tall, were completed in 1886. From a technical standpoint, the statue is a marvel. The inner structure was designed by the French engineer, Alexandre Eiffel. His design for the stressed copper skin of the statue anticipated many of the principle utilized in modern aircraft.

After a century, the monument began to show signs of deterioration. Just as Frenchmen had created the Statue, so it was with renovation. A Frenchman noted the decay and French and American craftsmen and contributions brought about the renewal of the Statue in time for its centennial. Liberty is still popular in France and the United States.

Mark Twain's letter about the Statue of Liberty ______.

A.represented a serious question as to the need for the statue

B.was a put-on by a journalist

C.raised a great deal of money

D.poked fun at the French

Success Story

Journalist Mark Stretton examines the growth of on insurance company

which now has sales of £300 million per year.

In 1993, American-born Henry Eastman got a call from a recruitment consultancy, inviting him to give up his successful marketing career in one insurance company to become the head of another. This new job was to work for an investment company called Brinscombe's, who wanted him to create a brand new car insurance company. Despite the risks involved, Eastman agreed.

A lot of young drivers in the 20 to 35 age range, especially the ones who have already had accidents, have difficulties in getting car insurance because most companies think they are too big a risk. However, Eastman believes there ore no problems if their annual payments are large enough. He offered them insurance cover through television commercials and attracted many customers by giving out folders in which to keep their policies safe. His strategy was a good one. Within eight years he had built the business into o national company with 500,000 customers and sales of £300 million per year.

The company is based in Manchester. The authorities there wanted to increase employment and offered Eastman a £1 million grant to start up after he promised to create 350 new jobs. He is now e major employer in the area with 1,400 staff and has also created new specialist insurance companies for women, credit card users and people using the internet.

Eastman believes in American management methods: working as a team to get better results; net being allowed to miss lunch because you ore too busy; and having fun. This belief has recently won him a place in a '50 Best Companies to Work For' survey.

In 1999, Brinscombe's decided to withdraw their investment and offered the company to the management team. They said 'yes', borrowed £80 million from a bank and bought it. Eastman is pleased with his success. 'We're a great and growing company', he says, 'and we give our customers better service than they can dream of!'

A Dangerous Place

Paula had always wanted to go to New York and now she had the chance at last. She was a journalist, and her newspaper was sending her there to do a series of articles on the city. But before she left her home in London, several friends warned her to be careful and not to go out alone at night in New York. "It's a dangerous place. People get robbed or even killed in broad daylight!" they told her

But once she got there, she was oniy afraid of exhaustion. It was so stimulating and exciting a city that she never got any steep. It took her two weeks to do the articles and she had to interview a lot of people, but she enjoyed every minute. She completely forgot all her friends' warnings until the day before she went back to London. It atl began in a bar

She was having lunch there when she suddenly felt someone was watching her. She looked up and noticed a man sitting at a table opposite her. He was staring at her, but looked away. She noticed that he had a scar on his cheek. He was about 30, and had short, curly hair

Paula was not worried at all then. She had to go to an airline office to book her flight home. She wanted an afternoon flight instead of a morning one. On her way there, she stopped to look at something in a shop window. To her surprise, she saw the man following her; she could see his reflection in the glass. He had stopped just behind her. Suddenly she felt afraid. She walked on. Then she stopped and looked behind her again. But this time she could not see him.

Just then she noticed she had come to the airline office. She went in. After she had finished her business, she decided to phone a friend from a telephone booth there. She was carrying a small, portable but very expensive tape recorder. It was in a black case. She kept her money and passport in the case as well. But the booth was so cramped that she had to eave the case outside. When she came out, it had disappeared. She was stunned. Then she saw the red-haired man hurrying out of the office. 听力原文:M: Tina White, some people describe you as the best magazine editor in the world,
and you are only in your thirties. Can you tell us how you started your amazing career?

W: Well, when I was twenty, still at college, I was asked to write a weekly column for a local paper. The paper had wanted me to write about famous people, you know, their wonderful lifestyles, the sort of thing people like to read about. Instead, what I did was to concentrate on people who the general public didn't know, but who had something original to say.

M: And you got away with it! Now at that early stage, your family was important. How far did they influence your career choice?

W: My father was a film producer, and my childhood was spent around international actors and directors, so with such influences, I should have become an actress—something my father would have loved. But no, I chose to be a journalist in spite of the wishes of my family. I think the biggest influence was my school, not so much the people but the materials it gave me access to… the hours and hours spent in the library.

M: From being a journalist, you then went on to become an editor. I understand the first magazine you edited, Female Focus, wasn't much of a success?

W: Well, I was the editor for a year, and then I resigned, mainly because of disagreements with the owners. They were reluctant to change things, because they had faith it would eventually make a profit. But when you think of it, the magazine had been losing millions of pounds a year before I became its editor. When I left, it was still losing money but nothing like as much as previously. Also, when I took over, it was selling around 650,000 copies. That soon increased to 800,000, so it was certainly an improvement.

M: And now you are editing Woman's World, and you've made it the best selling women's magazine ever. How do you make people want to read it?

W: For some of my competitors, the most important point is what you put on the cover of your magazine. But they forget faithful readers look beyond that. The real challenge is, how do you encourage a reader to read a serious piece? How are we going to make it an article that people want to read? You have to get their attention. And nothing does that better than a very lively, even shocking, opening line.

M: It is said that you work very hard because you don't trust your employees.

W: That was the case five years ago, when I was appointed. It almost drove me mad. I knew I had the right idea, for example, but I wasn't able to get it done because I didn't have the brilliant writers I have now, or the right staff to read all the material when it came in. I had to read everything about six times, and that was awful! It took me four years to put together the team I wanted, and it would be very unfair to say I don't trust them.

M: Do you sometimes worry that you might lose your fame and wealth?

W: Yes, when you work as an editor, you are praised today and criticized tomorrow. Of course it would be difficult to live without all the… well… material comforts Vm used to, but a smaller income is something I think I could cope with. It wouldn't be the end of the world. Much more serious it would be if the people I work with no longer admired my work, and most of all I want it to stay that way.

M: Tina, thank you very much for joining us today.

Questions:

(31)

A.To concentrate on people who the general public didn't know.
