4. The Dark Ages The Dark Ages are the period in Europe after the fall of the Greek and Roman Empires in 476 to the emergence of the Italian Renaissance in 1420. The term is also synonymous with the Middle Ages, or the Medieval Period, in which the Empire was overrun by the German Barbarian tribes and Rome herself was completely destroyed. The Visigoths, Huns and Vandals had no interest in learning, in architecture, or in culture. They were warrior tribes who were always at war. So buildings, libraries, works of art were all destroyed across Western Europe. This marks the end of a period of artistic, intellectual, economical, and political advancements. The Dark ages were a period of no real developments of anything except superstition and a belief in witchcraft. There too many disadvantages in different aspects. The collapse saw the end of stable government, schools, libraries, monetary system and a common language. During this period development of the human race was slowed down by 1,000 years. Many of the old arts and crafts were lost, and intellectual activity barely existed. People were forced to turn to the landowners to protect them. Life was now no more than growing the crops and rearing animals to provide food. Fortunately, Ireland had never been conquered by the Romans and was ignored by the Barbarians. The ancient Celtic civilization that had disappeared in Europe still flourished here. The Celts have a great love of learning and it is this that eventually saved Europe from the Dark Ages. The lost knowledge of the ancient Greeks and Romans was rediscovered in the Irish monasteries of France and Italy. However, the Darkness still continued for the majority of people. It came to a terrible head in the 14th century when the entire continent was overrun by the great plague known as the Black Death. It is thought that 100 million people died as a result. It was, we now know, the terrible, frightening, finale to the Dark Ages. 7. From the passage, which of the following statement is Not True?

A、The Dark Ages is also called The Medieval Period.

B、The Dark Ages began just after the fall of Rome and it dominated the European continent until the early 14th century.

C、The Dark Ages is regarded as a backwards time in human history.

D、There was no real developments of anything during the Dark ages.

第4题
All the useful energy at the surface of the earth comes from the activity of the sun. The sun heats and feeds creatures and mankind. Each year it provides men with two hundred million tons of grain and nearly ten million tons of wood.

Coal, oil, natural gas, and all other fuels are stored energy from the sun. Some was collected by this season's plants as carbon compounds. Some was stored by plants and trees ages ago. Even waterpower derives from the sun. Water turned into vapor by the sun falls as rain. It courses down the mountains and is converted to electric power. Light transmits only the energy that comes from the sun's outer layer, and much of this energy that is directed towards the earth never arrives. About nine tenths of it is absorbed by the atmosphere of the earth. In fact, the earth itself gets only one half millionth of the sun's entire output of radiant energy.

The sun is the source of all of the following EXCEPT______.

A.gasoline

B.natural gas

C.atomic power

D.animal fat

阅读理解。
Tom was one of the brightest boys in the year, with supportive parents. But when he was 15 he suddenly

stopped trying. He left school at 16 with only two scores for secondary school subjects. One of the reasons

that made it cool for him not to care was the power of his peer (同龄人) group.

The lack of right male (男性的) role models in many of their lives - at home and particularly in the school

environment (环境)-means that their peers are the only people they have to judge themselves against.

They don't see men succeeding in society so it doesn't occur to them that they could make something of

themselves. Without male teachers as a role model, the effect of peer actions and street culture (文化) is all-

powerful. Boys want to be part of a club. However, schools can provide the environment for change, and

provide the right role models for them. Teachers need to be trained to stop that but not in front of a child's

peers. You have to do it one to one, because that is when you see the real child.

It's pointless sending a child home if he or she has done wrong. They see it as a welcome day off to watch

television or play computer games. Instead, schools should have a special unit where a child who has done

wrong goes for the day and gets advice about his problems - somewhere he can work away from his peers

and go home after the other children.

1. Why did Tom give up studying?
A. He disliked his teachers.

B. His parents no longer supported him.

C. It's cool for boys of his age not to care about studies.

D. There were too many subjects in his secondary school.

2. What seems to have a bad effect on students like Tom?
A. Peer groups.

B. A special unit.

C. The student judges.

D. The home environment.

3. What should schools do to help the problem schoolboys?
A. Wait for their change patiently.

B. Train leaders of their peer groups.

C. Stop the development of street culture.

D. Give them lessons in a separate area.

4. A teacher's work is most effective with a schoolboy when he _____.
A. is with the boy alone

B. teaches the boy a lesson

C. sends the boy home as punishment

D. works together with another teacher
