听力原文： There are two main kinds of sports. The two kinds of sports are team sports and individual sports. Team sports are such sports as baseball, basketball and volleyball. Team sports require two separate teams. The teams play against each other. They compete against each other in order to get the best score. For example, in a football game if team A gets seven points and team B gets three points, team A wins the game. Team sports are sometimes called competitive sports. Besides team sports there is another main type or kind of sporting activity. The second type is individual sports. In individual sports there are no teams. There isn't any competition.
People play individual sports in order to get exercise. They don't play individual sports for the competition. Generally they want to get some exercise not to win a game. Individual sports are such sports as swimming; skiing and running. Of course it is possible to compete in individual sports. It is possible to keep a score in individual sports. The main difference, however, between team sports and individual sports is that individual sports can be performed alone.

They ask themselves questions like these: How fast can I run ？ How high can I climb？ How deep can I dive？ How far can I swim？ How long can I hold my breath？ How much can I lift？ How high can I jump？ Because people enjoy challenges, they like to play sports and watch other people play sports. They like climbing, running, diving, lifting, jumping, and so on. Every four years millions of people all over the world enjoy the international sports competitions called the Olympics.
There are challenges that are not physical challenges. There are social and intellectual challenges, too. Leonardo Da Vinci, who lived in Italy during the fifteenth century, enjoyed every possible challenge. He was an artist and painted the well-known picture, the Mona Lisa. He was an inventor who invented a device to let people breathe under water. He was a scientist, and he learned a great deal about human anatomy.
Another kind of challenge faced the Egyptians between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago when they decided to build the first pyramid. They used six million tons of rock. That is enough to build a ten-foot wall around all of France. Four hundred thousand men worked for twenty years to build it.
So, for thousands of years, people accept challenges. Today we still have many challenges before us. Medical science faces the challenges of conquering the many diseases which still attack human beings. Engineers and planners must build new cities and new kinds of transportation. Scientists must develop new forms of energy. And many of us are interested in the challenge of space. We live in an age of challenge.

听力原文： Emma Lazarus was born in 1849. As a child, she was different from her six sisters and brothers. She was not interested in sports and games. She was serious and weak. Famous writers were asked to contribute pieces from their writings to be sold to the public. Emma agreed to help with the project. She decided to write a poem about the statue itself.
Emma Lazarus's poem, "The New Colossus", became famous the world over. In 1903, her words were carved on the base of the statue.

A runner carrying a burning torch which symbolizes the link with the Olympic games in ancient Greece will mount the steps, light the Olympic flame which will burn throughout the games, and the Games of the twenty-fourth Olympic will begin.
The Olympic idea means friendship and cooperation among the youth of the world. The Olympic Movement proves that real peace can be achieved through sport. Probably the best-known symbol of the Olympic Movement is the five linked rings, which represent the five continents of the world. The Olympic flag itself is white and the rings are in five colors, blue, yellow, black, green and red. Any national flag contains at least one of these five colors.
The original Games began in ancient Greece in 776 B. C. These games were part of a festival held every four years in honour of the god, Zeus, at a place called Olympia. The festival included contests that tested the skills of soldiers. Some Olympic sports such as boxing and wrestling and many of the athletic events have a long history. The modern games, revived in AD 1896, owe a lot to one man, Baron Pierre de Coubertin. He suggested that the Olympic Games which were discontinued in AD 393, should be restored and he helped establish the structure of the modern Olympic Movement.

Television has become the main source of information and entertainment for the average American. It is estimated that by the time a child reaches 18, he or she has spent almost twice as much time watching TV as in the classroom. Many people are concerned about TV's influence.
News is edited and condensed to fit into two or three minutes per event. Unrealistic family and social situations are portrayed, with all problems easily solved within a half hour, giving the young a distorted view of life. How has TV affected the young people who grew up watching it？ Unquestionably, children learn a lot from TV shows, but not all of it is appropriate or positive.
Moreover, many educators believe that American students read and write less well than students of earlier generations because so much of their knowledge has come to them via TV and film rather than the printed word.
Why is cable TV necessary？
