Scientists have discovered a genetic defect that appears to cause deficit-hyperactivity disorder, more commonly known as hyperactivity. People afflicted with this disorder have trouble focusing their attention and controlling impulses, and tend to be rest-less and aggressive. The defect occurs in a gene that regulates the body's use of the thyroid hormone. This finding was made in continuing study organized by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases in which 70 percent of children inheriting the gene were hyperactive while only 20 percent of the children not inheriting the gene were hyperactive. And although the researchers admit that this defective gene probably accounts for only a fraction of cases of hyperactivity, this discovery will allow doctors to spot newborn babies likely to have the disorder, and also to provide clues for its cause and treatment.

第二篇 Download Knowledge Directly to Your Brain

For the first time, researchers havebeen able to hack into the process of learning in the brain, using inducedbrain patterns to create a learned behavior. It’s not quite as advanced as aninstant kung-fu download, and it’s not as sleek as cognitive inception, butit’s still an important finding that could lead to new teaching andrehabilitation techniques.

Future therapies could decode the brainactivity patterns of an athlete or a musician, and use them as a benchmark forteaching another person a new activity, according to the researchers.

Scientists from BostonUniversity and ATR ComputationalNeuroscience Laboratories in Kyotoused functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, to study the learningprocess. They were examining the adult brain’s aptitude for visual perceptuallearning, or VPL, in which repetitive training improves a person’s performanceon a particular task. Whether adults can do this as well as young people hasbeen an ongoing debate in neuroscience.

Led by BU neuroscientist Takeo Watanabe, researchers used a method called decoded fMRI neurofeedback to stimulate thevisual cortex. First they showed participants circles at differentorientations. Then they used fMRI to watch the participants’ brain activity. The researchers were then able to train the participants to recreate thisvisual cortex activity.

The volunteers were again placed in MRImachines and asked to visualize shapes of certain colors. The participants wereasked to “somehow regulate activity in the posterior part of the brain” to makea solid green disc as large as they could. They were told they would get a paidbonus proportional to the size of this disc, but they weren’t told anythingabout what the disc meant. The researchers watched the participants’ brainactivity and monitored the activation patterns in their visual cortices.

“Participants can be trained to control theoverall mean activation of an entire brain region,” the study authors write,“or the activation in one region relative to that in another region.”

This worked even when test subjects werenot aware of what they were learning, the researchers said.“The most surprising thing in this study isthat mere inductions of neural activation patterns corresponding to a specificvisual feature led to visual performance improvement on the visual feature, without presenting the feature or subjects' awareness of what was to be learned,”Watanabe said in a statement.

Watanabe and colleagues said this methodcan be a powerful tool.

“It can ‘incept’ a person to acquire newlearning, skills, or memory, or possibly to restore skills or knowledge thathas been damaged through accident, disease, or aging, without a person’sawareness of what is learned or memorized,” they write.

what have researchers been ableto do with the help of the study?

A. Discover aperson’s learning process in the brain.

B. Make a person know how to do something without learning.

C. Set up different learning patterns for different people.

D. Enable people to learn kung fu instantly.

When the end of the world comes, we'll know what to blame. Scientists have found compellin
g evidence that the Sun has a baby brother, a dark star whose eccentric orbit is responsible for periodically showering the Earth with comets and meteorites.

The dark star -- named Nemesis by astronomers -- is thought to be a brown dwarf that spins round the Sun in an orbit so large it is measured in light years, the distance light travels in a year, equivalent to about 6,000 billion miles.

The research suggests that, every 26m years, the star's eccentric orbit brings it within one light year of the solar system. There it causes havoc in the Oort Cloud, a huge region surrounding the solar system that contains billions of bits of cosmic rabble left over from the formation of planets.

Of the millions of rocks it throws out of orbit at each visit, some hurtle Earthwards, and have several times nearly wiped out life on Earth.

Astronomers have long wondered if the Sun has a smaller partner. Recently, two independent groups of researchers have found evidence of one.

One group, led by John Matese, professor of physics at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, confirms the notion that it is most likely to be a brown dwarf, a star that never accumulated enough mass to ignite and which has simply sat in space smoldering for billions of years.

Matese studied 82 comets from the Oort Cloud and found common elements in the shape of their orbits that could only be explained if they had been influenced by the gravitational pull of an object several times the size of Jupiter and existing about 25,000 times farther from the Sun than the Earth.

Matese said: "A companion to the Sun orbiting at these distances would have little effect on the planets. But it would play a big role in the way comets 'made their way' from their birth places in the planetary disc out to the Oort Cloud and in how they can return to the inner solar system."

Further research was published by Richard Muller, professor of physics at the University of California, Berkeley, following analyses of moon rock samples brought back to Earth by Apollo 14.

The absence of a protective atmosphere means the moon has been subjected to intense bombardment in its 4.5 billion-year existence.

Muller's breakthrough was to find a way to date how long ago any particle was melted -- meaning he could build up a picture of whether the moon gets a constant barrage or suffers spells of intense bombardment.

He said, "The evidence clearly shows that the moon has gone through spells of relatively frequent impacts and others of reduced intensity. I believe it is likely that this is because the Oort Cloud is being disturbed by a massive body that is throwing comets out of stable orbits, a small fraction of which could reach the Earth."

Muller and others believe that the dark star probably takes about 26m years to complete an orbit around the sun.

Other scientists have already noted that mass extinctions of life on Earth seem to occur in a pattern with gaps equivalent to multiples of 26m, suggesting some regular event is causing the comets to come Earth's way.

The best-known such event was the one that wiped out the dinosaurs 65m years ago, but that was not the worst; the planet has suffered several such large mass extinctions.

Astronomers have found the first Earth-sized planet orbiting another star. The discovery raises the chances of finding planets that could support life as we know it.

Which of the following is NOT a feature of the Nemesis?

A.It contributes to showering of comets on the earth.

B.It is a smaller partner of the Sun.

C.It has a large orbit.

D.It contains bits of cosmic rubble.

Valvular heart diseases are quite common, essentially resulting in impaired blood flow and
were very difficult to treat. Some 30 years ago, it became possible to replace .diseased valves with prostheses to impose a greater control over blood flow.

Early devices were of the mechanical variety, in which devices like ball-in-a-cage or tilting disc would be used to allow blood to flow under near-normal conditions. Although a few mechanical problems were encountered in the early days, the major difficulty lay with the tendency for any foreign material to initiate a blood clot. So, all valve recipients have to be given anticoagulant therapy. This is not particularly desirable for the patients, who may develop bleeding problems, and in any case is not always successful.

Although good results are achieved with these valves, it was considered necessary to develop alternatives and the direction was that of natural tissues. It's not possible to transplant heart valves untreated because of rejection phenomena, but it became apparent that collagenous tissue could be cross-linked by glutaraldehyde and prepared in the form. of a heart valve. Two sources of tissue were considered for this purpose, bovine pericardium (collagenous tissue derived from the wall of a cow's heart) and porcine valves (heart valves taken from pigs) and the resulting "bioprosthetic valve" appeared to be very promising. It was particularly important that these patients didn't need anticoagulation. Unfortunately, these valves have not proved very durable, the cross-linked collagen suffering from slow calcification and deterioration so most of the replacement valves themselves need to be replaced within a decade.

This would tend to suggest that the mechanical valves give superior performance, notwithstanding the anticoagulation problem, and a move back towards their use might have been expected. However, most of the valves in current use incorporate an alloy'(usually Stellite) for

the housing, and a carbon coated occuluder. The complex shapes of some of the housing have required combinations of casting and welding technologies to be used in their construction and serious problems have arisen with a valve design from one manufacturer, where a small number of catastrophic fractures have occurred within the housing. In patients where this valve has been used to treat aortic valve disease, this fracture is usually fatal and although the risks are small, the problem is important to the industry.

Also, at a time when this dichotomy is exercising the minds of surgeons, scientists and regulatory bodies alike, the emergence of the disease BSE in cattle has placed even further restrictions on the use of animal tissue for this type of application and the whole question of prosthetic heart valves has been turned from a reasonable successful example of reconstructive implant surgery to a very confused area. This serves to highlight some of the very varied problems of facing the use of biomaterials.

A.surgical equipment

B.heart diseases

C.materials for surgical implants
