Deep inside a mountain near Sweatwater in East Tennessee is a body of water known as the L
ost Sea. It is listed by the "Guinness Book of World Records" as the world's largest underground lake. The lost Sea is part of an extensive and historical cave system called Craighead Caverns.

The caverns have been known and used since the days of the Cherokee Indian Nation. The cave expands into a series of huge rooms from a small opening on the side of the mountain. Approximately one mile from the entrance, in a room called "the Council Room", many Indian artifacts have been found. Some of the items discovered include pottery, arrowheads, weapons and jewelry.

For many years there were persistent rumors of a large underground lake somewhere in a cave, but it was not discovered until 1905. In that year, a thirteen-year-old boy named Ben Sands crawled through a small opening three hundred feet underground. He found himself in a large cave half filled with water.

Today tourists visit the Lost Sea and ride far out onto it in glass-bottomed boats powered by electric motors. More than thirteen acres of water have been mapped out so far and still no end to the lake has been found. Even though teams of divers have tried to explore the Lost Sea, the full extent of it is still unknown.

According to the passage, the lost Sea is unique because it is ______.

A.part of a historical cave system

B.the biggest underground lake in the world

C.listed in the "Guinness Book of World Records"

D.the largest body of water in Tennessee

Sometimes file U.S. government goes out of its way to prove it can be an absolute nuisance
. Take the case of Southern Clay, Inc., which has a factory at Paris, Tennessee, putting out a clay product for cat boxes best known as "Kitty Litter." It's a simple enough process, but the Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) insists that since clay comes from the ground-an excavation half a mile from the Kitty Litter plant--the company actually is engaged in mining and milling. Therefore, says MSHA, Southern Clay is subject to all the roles that govern, say, coal miners working in shafts several hundred feet down.

The company has been told to devise an escape system and fire fighting procedures in case there is a fire in its "mine". Southern Clay estimates it will lose 6,000 manhours in production time giving its 250 factory workers special training in how to escape from a mine disaster.

One thing that has always impressed us about cats, in addition to their tidiness, is that they seem to watch the human world with a sense of wise and detached superiority, as though they wondered what the hustle and bustle is all about. If they grin from time to time, as some people insist, it's no wonder.

The author's purpose in writing this passage is to______.

A.explain how Kitty Litter is produced

B.describe the Mine Safety and Health Administration

C.show how tidy cats are

D.show that the government can sometimes be a nuisance

Scientists have come up with a theory for why time flies when you are having fun and drags
when you are bored.

Scans have shown that【C1】______ of activity in the brain change depending on how we focus on a task. Concentrating on time passing, as we do when bored, wil【C2】______ brain activity which will make it seem as though the clock is ticking more【C3】______ . The research, by the French Laboratory of Neurobiology and Cognition, is published in the magazine Science.

In the study, 12 volunteers watched an image while researchers【C4】______ their brain activity using MRI(核磁共振成像) scans. Volunteers were given a【C5】______ of tasks. In one they were told to concentrate simply on the duration of an image, in【C6】______ they were asked to focus on the【C7】______ , and in a third they were asked to concentrate on both duration and color. The results showed that a network of brain regions was【C8】______ when more subjects were paid attention to duration.

It is thought that if the brain is busy focusing on many aspects of a task, then it has to spread its resources thinly, and pays less【C9】______ to time passing. Therefore, time passes without us really【C10】______ it, and seems to go quickly.【C11】______ , if the brain is not stimulated in this way, it concentrates its【C12】______ energies on monitoring the passing of time. This may make time seem to【C13】______ , but in fact it is probably a more accurate perception of reality.【C14】______ the researchers found that the more volunteers concentrated on the duration of the images, the more【C15】______ were their estimates of its duration.

Lead researcher Dr. Jennifer Coull said many of the areas of the brain【C16】______ in estimating time were the same that played a key role in controlling movement, and【C17】______ for action. She said this overlap suggests that the brain may make sense of time as【C18】______ between movements, in much the same way【C19】______ musicians mark time with his foot, or【C20】______ anticipate the sound of a starter's pistol.

【C1】

A.panels

B.patents

C.patterns
