听力原文: A new enemy is threatening Japanese traditions:leisure. As part of its attempt to increase imports, the government is trying to get people to work less and spend more. The workers are disgusted.

The figures support the western prejudice that the Japanese are all work and no play.Trying to force workers away from their desks and machines, the government said last April that the country should cut down from its 2,100 hours average work year to 1,899 hours and a five-day week.Beginning in February, banks and stock markets will be closed on Saturdays, staff of civil service will be forced out of their offices two Saturdays a month. The government hopes that others will follow that practice.

But some persuasion will be needed.small companies are very angry about it and they fear competitors may not cut hours. The unions are no happier:they have even advertised in newspapers arguing their case against the foreign pressure that is forcing leisure upon them. They say that shorter hours are a disguised pay cut.The industrialists, who have no objection to the government's plans, admit that shorter hours will help them cut costs. Younger Japanese, who are supposed to be acting against their hard-working parents, show no sign of wanting time off either. But unlike older workers, they do spend money in their spare time. Not content with watching television, they dance, dress up,sit in cafes,go to pop concerts and generally drive the leisure-industry boom. Now that they know how to consume, maybe the West can teach them to relax and enjoy themselves, too.

(30)

听力原文: Rats are the enemy of human beings. They eat or spoil crops of grain and rice before they can be harvested, or while they are in storage. In India, where millions of people go hungry, there are ten times as many rats as people. Rats devour half of the available food. Rats will also attack birds and animals, from frogs and chicks to geese and young calves. They have even destroyed dams and buildings by making holes through or under them, and have started fires by chewing on electrical wiring.

The most terrible destruction caused by rats, however, has come from the diseases they carry. In the fourteenth century, rats caused the death of one-third of the world's population by transmitting the dreadful Black Plague that mined Europe.

Ironically, it is in fighting diseases that rats have been most useful to humanity. Thousands of specially bred rats are used in research laboratories every year to test medicines which can possibly be used to prolong and improve human life. Some laboratory rats are even used to test new methods of eliminating their cousins, the wild rats.

(23)

A.The Black Plague.

B.Enemy of Humanity.

C.Common Animal pests.

D.Causes of World Hunger.

听力原文: The US military has opened a criminal investigation into the death of two New Yo
rk State National Guard officers at a base in Iraq.

The initial US military investigation indicated Captain Philip E and First Lieutenant Louis Allen were in the same room when a mortar round hit the room's window. The subsequent explosion was thought to have killed both soldiers. But a military explosives team determined the blast was not caused by a mortar. A criminal investigation would indicate that this explosion was caused by negligence or sabotage, not by enemy fire. Captain E was company commander of the Headquarters Company of the New York National Guard. The Guard is part of the 42nd infantry division based near Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit. Lieutenant Louis was operations manager for the company.

What's the US military's investigation on?

A.The crime evidence of Saddam Hussein.

B.The death of two New York State National Guard officers at a base in Iraq.

C.The mason of the explosion at a US base in Iraq.

D.The real identities of the two offices died in an explosion.

听力原文: We have met the enemy, and he is ours. We bought him at a pet shop. When monkey-pox, a disease usually found in the African rain forest, suddenly turns up in children in the American Midwest, it's hard not to wonder if the disease that comes from foreign animals is homing

in on human beings. "Most of the infections we think of as human infections started in other animals," says Stephen Morse, director of the Center for Public Health Preparedness at Columbia University.

It's not just that we're going to where the animals are; we're also bringing them closer to us. Popular foreign pets have brought a whole new disease to this country. A strange illness killed Isaksen's pets, and she now thinks that keeping foreign pets is a bad idea. "I don't think it's fair to have them as pets when we have such a limited knowledge of them," says Isaksen.

"Laws allowing these animals to be brought in from deep forest areas without stricter control need changing," says Peter Schantz. Monkey-pox may be the wake-up call. Researchers believe infected animals may infect their owners. We know very little about these new diseases. A new bug may be kind at first. But some strains may become harmful. Monkey-pox doesn't look like a major infectious disease. But it is not impossible to pass the disease from person to person.

Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

33. What do we learn about the pet sold at the shop?

34. Why did Isaksen advise people not to have foreign pets?

35. What does the passage suggest we may have to do in the future?

(30)

A.It may come from Columbia.

B.It may suffer from monkey-pox.

C.It may enjoy being with children.

D.It may prevent us from being infected.

听力原文: Greek soldiers sent messages by turning their shields toward the sun. The flashe
s reflected light could be seen several miles away. The enemy did not know what the flashes meant, but other Greek soldiers could understand the messages. [14]Roman soldiers in some places built long rows of signal towers. When they had a message to send, the soldiers shouted it from tower to tower. If there were enough towers and enough soldiers with loud voices, important news could be sent quickly over distance.

[16]In Africa, people learned to send messages by beating on a series of large drums. Each drum was kept within hearing distance of the next one. The drum beats were sent out in a special way that all the drummers understood. Though the messages were simple, they could be sent at great speed for hundreds of miles.

In the eighteenth century, [15]a French engineer found a new way to send short messages. In this way, a person held a flag in each hand and the arms were moved to various positions representing different letters of the alphabet. It was like spelling out words with flags and arms.

Over a long period of time, people sent messages by all these different ways. [17]However, not until the telephone was invented in America in the nineteenth century could people send speech sounds over a great distance in just a few seconds.

According to this passage, the Roman soldiers mainly depended upon ______to send their messages.

A.fine weather

B.signal towers

C.the spelling system

D.arm movements

Mr. Comey says the information was revealed by Mr. Padilla through interrogations and has been released to the public because of a request from Congress. He says Mr. Padilla planned to hit apartment buildings in New York City but the targets in Washington and Florida were also discussed. Jose Padilla was arrested in May of 2002 when he arrived in Chicago from the Middle East. Jim Malone, VOA news, Washington.
