Telling Tales about People

One of the most common types of nonfiction, and one that many people enjoy reading, is stories about people&39;s lives. These stores fall into three general categories: autobiography, memoir, and biography.

An autobiography is the story of a person&39;s life written by himself or herself. Often it begins with the person&39;s earliest recollections and ends in the present. Autobiography writers may not be entirely objective in the way they present themselves. However, they offer the reader a good look at the way they are and what makes them that way. &39;People as diverse as Benjamin Franklin and Helen Keller have written autobiographies. Other writers, such as James Joyce, have written thinly fictionalized accounts of their lives. These are not autobiographies, but they are very close to it.

Memoirs, strictly speaking, are autobiographical accounts that focus as much on the events of the times as on the life of the author. Memoir writers typically use these events as backdrops for their lives. They describe them in detail and discuss their importance. Recently, though, the term memoir seems to be becoming interchangeable with autobiography. A memoir nowadays may or may not deal with the outside world.

Biographies are factual accounts of someone else&39;s life. In many senses, these may be the hardest of the three types to write. Autobiography writers know the events they write about because they lived them. But biography writers have to gather information from as many different sources as possible. Then they have to decide which facts to include. Their goal is to present a balanced picture of a person, not one that is overly positive or too critical. A fair, well-presented biography may take years to research and write.

This passage is mostly about__________. 查看材料

A.the characteristics of autobiographies, memoirs, and biographies

B.famous autobiographies

C.why biography can be difficult to write

D.differences between autobiographies and memoirs

"Freshman fifteen" is a term which means fifteen pounds, or about seven kilograms— the wei
ght students might expect to gain in their first year of college. People used to talk about the "freshman ten." Before that, it was the "freshman five." Are freshman more inflated, or just the expression? The fact is, many young men and women do put on extra weight when they start college. Some schools that have done research on the issue including Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, have found that freshmen gain an average of four pounds during their first twelve weeks, the equivalent of two kilograms. If weight gain continues at this rate, how long before they put on fifteen pounds? The answer is forty-five weeks, or almost a year. The next question is, why do so many freshmen gain weight? The answers listed by experts are not so surprising. One is poor diet: College students often eat foods high in fat and sugar and starch with no parents around to say no to junk food. Students may also miss meals. They could be in class or studying or just ... busy. In any case, those who miss meals are more likely to overeat when they do have food. Also, freshmen often use food to put their mind at ease. They have college pressures to deal with. Not only that, many are living away from home for the first time. Another reason college students gain weight is that they often do not get enough exercise. Finally, there is something else that can add up to the "freshman five" or ten or fifteen, alcohol. Alcohol is high in calories and this is especially true of beer. And, no, freshmen are not supposed to be drinking, not unless they are twenty-one, the legal drinking age in America. For many college students, the extra weight they put on in their freshman year can be as hard to escape as term papers and final exams.

Paragraph 1 is centered on______.

A.why freshmen put on weight in college

B.why freshmen worry about their weight

C.how the "freshman fifteen" gets its name

D.how the "freshman fifteen" amazes freshmen

Preventing collisions is referred to as separation. Separation is a term used to prevent aircraft from coming too close to each other by use of 4 vertical and 5 separation minima. Many aircraft now have 6 systems installed to act as a backup to ATC observation and instructions. Aircraft may fly with or without the use of the air traffic control system. Historically, although the children of immigrants may have grown up bilingual and bicultur
al, many did not pass on much of their parents' language or culture to their own children. Thus, many grandchildren of immigrants do not speak the language of the old country and are "American" by culture. However, in some parts of the country with established communities that share a common language or culture, bilingualism and biculturalism continue. This is particularly true in communities where new immigrants are still arriving. In general, cultural pluralism (多元化) is more accepted in the United States today than it was in the first half of the 20th century, and many of the school systems have developed bilingual programs and multicultural curricula.

At the close of the 20th century, there seemed to be a rise in the consciousness of ethnic groups around the world, and a sense of pride in what makes them unique. This occurs in the United States among many different groups, and in some cases it has resulted in new names to symbolize each group's identity. In the United States, people have become very sensitive to the language used to describe these groups, and they try to be "politically correct" (P. C. ). For example, many black Americans, particularly young people, prefer the term African-American instead of black, to identify with their African heritage. Some Spanish speakers prefer to be called Latinos (referring to Latin America) instead of Hispanics, while others prefer to be identified by their country of origin (Cuban-American or Cuban, Chicano, Mexican-American or Mexican, and so on).

In spite of some very important differences, however, there is still a tie that binds Americans together. That tie is a sense of national identity—of "being an American". Incidentally, when citizens of the United States refer to themselves as Americans, they have no intention of excluding people from Latin American countries. There is no word such as United Statesians in the English language, so people call themselves Americans. Thus, what is really a language problem has sometimes caused misunderstandings. Although citizens of Latin American countries may call the people in the United States North Americans, to most people in the United States this makes no sense either, because the term North Americans refer to Canadians and Mexicans as well as citizens of the United States. The word American, then, will be used in this text as the adjective and nationality for the people who live in the United States of America.

According to the passage, today many grandchildren of immigrants ______ .

A.don't like their old language and culture

B.don't speak English and reject American culture

C.only speak English and are "American" by culture

D.only live in established communities where new immigrants are still arriving

Fishes

The term fish is applied to a variety of cold-blooded aquatic vertebrates of several evolutionary lines. Fish share certain features with other vertebrates. These features are gill slits (鳃裂) at some point in the life cycle, a notochord (脊索), or skeletal supporting rod, a dorsal hollow nerve cord, and a tail.

The study of fishes, the science of ichthyology (鱼类学), is of broad importance. There are many reasons why fishes are of interest to humans; the most important is their relationship with and dependence on the environment. A more obvious reason for interest in fishes is their role as a moderate but important part of the world's food supply. This resource, once thought unlimited, is now realized to be finite and in delicate balance with the biological, chemical, and physical factors of the aquatic environment. Overfishing, pollution, and alteration of the environment are the chief enemies of proper fisheries management, both in fresh waters and in the ocean.

Another practical reason for studying fishes is their use in disease control. As predators on mosquito larvae, they help curb malaria and other mosquito borne diseases. Fishes are valuable laboratory animals in many aspects of medical and biological research. For example, the readiness of many fishes to acclimate to captivity has allowed biologists to study behaviour, physiology, and even ecology under relatively natural conditions. Fishes have been especially important in the study of animal behaviour where research on fishes has provided a broad base for the understanding of the more flexible behaviour of the higher vertebrates.

There are aesthetic and recreational reasons for an interest in fishes. Millions of people keep live fishes in home aquariums for the simple pleasure of observing the beauty and behaviour of animals otherwise unfamiliar to them. To many, aquarium fishes provide a personal challenge, allowing them to test their ability to keep a small section of the natural environment in their homes. Sportfishing is another way of enjoying the natural environment, also indulged in by millions of people every year. Interest in aquarium fishes and sportfishing support multimillion dollar industries throughout the world.

Fishes have been in existence for more than 450,000,000 years, during which time they have evolved repeatedly to fit into almost every conceivable type of aquatic habitat. In a sense, land vertebrates are simply highly modified fishes, for when fishes colonized the land habitat they became tetrapod (四足的) land vertebrates. The popular conception of a fish as a slippery, streamlined aquatic animal that possesses fins and breathes by gills applies to many fishes, but far more fishes deviate from that conception than conform. to it. For example, the body is elongate in many forms and greatly shortened in others; the body is flattened in some (principally in bottom-dwelling fishes) and laterally compressed in many others; the fins may be elaborately extended, forming intricate shapes, or they may be reduced or even lost; and the positions of the mouth, eyes, nostrils, and gill openings vary widely. Air breathers have appeared in several evolutionary lines.

Many fishes are cryptically coloured and shaped, closely matching their respective environments; others are among the most brilliantly coloured of all organisms, with a wide range of hues, often of striking intensity, on a single individual. The brilliance of pigments may be enhanced by the surface structure of the fish, so that it almost seems to glow. A number of unrelated fishes have actual light-producing organs. Many fishes are able to alter their coloration, some for the purpose of camouflage, others for the enhancement of behavioral signals.

Fishes range in adult length from less than 10 millimetres to more than 20 metres and in weight from about 1.5 grams to many thousands of kilogr

The term culture shock was introduced for the first time in 1958 to describe the anxiety p
roduced when a person moves to a completely new environment. This term expresses the feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do things in a new environment. This term expresses the feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do things in a new environment. We can describe culture shock as the physical and emotional discomfort a person suffers when coming to live in a place different from the place of origin. Often, the way that we live before is not accepted or considered as normal in the new place. Everything is different, for example, not speaking the language, not knowing how to use banking machines, not knowing how to use telephones, and so forth. The symptoms of culture shock can appear at different times. Although a person can experience real pain from culture shock, it is also an opportunity for growing and learning new perspectives. Culture shock can help people develop a better understanding of themselves and stimulate personal creativity. Culture shock has many stages. Each stage can be ongoing, or appear only at certain times. In the first stage, the new arrival may feel very happy about all of the new experience. This time is called the honeymoon stage. Afterward, the second stage presents itself. A person may encounter some difficulties in daily life. For example, communication difficulties may occur, such as not being understood. In this stage, there may be feelings of impatience, anger and sadness. Transition between the old methods and those of the new country is a difficult process and takes time to complete. The third stage is characterized by gaining some understanding of the new culture. A new feeling of pleasure and sense of humor may be experienced. A person may start to feel a psychological balance. The individual is more familiar with the environment and wants to belong. This starts an evaluation of the old ways versus those of the new. In the fourth stage, the person realizes that the new culture has good and bad things to offer. This stage can be one of double integration or triple integration, depending on the number of cultures that the person has to process. This integration is characterized by a more solid feeling of belonging. The person starts to define himself or herself and establish goals for living. The fifth stage is the stage that is called the reentry shock. This occurs when a person returns to the newly acquired customs are considered improper in the old culture. Questions 56—60 Complete the summary with words from the passage, changing the form where necessary, with only one word for each blank. Introduced in 1958, culture shock is a term used to (1) __________ physical and emotional discomfort people experience when they come to or live in a new place. Although many people suffer a lot from culture shock, it is an (2) _________ for personal improvement. The five stages of culture shock may last for a long time or show up once in a while. In the first stage, the (3) __________ stage, the new arrival might be OK with everything. Afterward, (4) ________ from old methods to the new one calls for time and energy. During the third and fourth stage, people may gain more understanding of the new culture and possess objective views. The double or triple integration is (5) __________ by a feeling of belonging. The last stage, called reentry shock, refers to the feeling people have when returning to their home country.
