Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.

To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor, you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clever speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control and you must be able to hold what you are teaching in order to make its meaning clear. The fact that a good teaches' has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn't mean that he/rill indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher's work and the actor's. The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he Uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.

A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don't understand something, they say no. The teacher therefore has to suit his act to the needs of his audience, which is his class. He can not learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.

The word "gifts" (Line 1, Para. 1) means" ______ ".

A.presents

B.talents

C.something belonging to a good actor

D.the way a teacher should act in class

The third of March, 1887, three months before l was seven years old, was the most important day I remember in all my life. On that day, my teacher, Anne Sullivan, came to me. I felt approaching footsteps. I thought it was my mother and stretched out my hand. Someone took it, and then I was caught up and held close in the arms of the person.

The morning after my teacher came she led me into her room and gave me a doll. When I had played with it a little while, Miss Sullivan slowly spelled into my hand the word "d-o-l-l". I was at once interested in this finger play and tried to imitate it. When I finally succeeded in making the letters correctly I was filled with childish pleasure and pride. Running downstairs to my mother I held up my hand end made the letters for doll. I did not know that I was spelling a word or even that words existed, I simply made my fingers go in monkey-like imitation. In the days that followed I learned to spell in this uncomprehending way many words. But my teacher had been with me several weeks before I understood that everything has a name.

The author was ______ years old when her teacher came to her.

A.less than seven

B.over seven

C.just six

D.a little, over six

Team Work

The class teacher/s and student/s need to work like a team, with the teacher being the coach who needs to continually encourage, motivate and intrigue each and every player, demanding high performance while ensuring that no individual gets bogged down in detail or overwhelmed with targets. This is particularly difficult in the sessions immediately after mimicking has been introduced since students become easily confused and tired when they first tackle mimicking. It is essential that each and every student understand why he or she are doing each activity, without taking undue amounts of time to explain. Whether the target is speed, creativity, effective use of repetition, making short clear sentences or so on, it is essential that every student is aware that the particular target is a guideline, and may be modified by them to suit their needs.

The need for speed is not a transparent goal and causes many cognitive problems for students since few realize the link between the ability to talk fast and easily understandable pronunciation and meaning, nor do most quickly realize that they are actively learning vocabulary items or good syntax through the peer-on- peer activities. Indeed it will be quite some time before these processes become self-evident and even more so in seminar classes. It's relatively easy to get most students intellectually and physically engaged in actively learning with verbally active classes while the real trick is to get everyone interested. If it's boring for the teacher it will probably be even more so for the students, especially for those who want cognitive understanding before they tackle something. These students are not recalcitrant, they reasonably expect to understand what they're doing and clearly identify their targets before they do anything. It is up to the "coach" to make sure that participants see the relevance of what they're doing and are actively interested in achieving either their own personal goals, the activity targets, or both through doing the activity in an active way.

Which of the following statements is true, according to the author?

A.Mimicking is the most difficult task for the teacher and students as well.

B.The teacher has to explain to the students without taking up too much time.

C.The sessions are essential to the students' carrying out the particular activities.

D.Once the target of the activity is settled, nothing should change any more.

Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.

Tokyo is one of the most confusing cities in the world. Over 20 millions people live and work in the Tokyo area, and many famous companies have their offices there. But most streets don't have names. So how can you find your way in Tokyo?

Most people in Tokyo are very good at giving directions. They can usually explain how to get to their home or their office from the nearest train station. People in Tokyo often use maps when they give directions. Advertisements in newspapers or magazines, for example, usually have a small map to help you find the company. If you're going to visit someone's house, it's a good idea to ask the person to draw, or fax you, a map of the local area. If you get lost, the best idea is to go to a police station. In Japan, each neighborhood has a small police station, and the police officers there have a map of all the buildings in the area. Giving directions is an important part of their job.

Tokyo is a confusing city mainly because _______.

A.it has a very large population

B.most streets don't have names

C.people in Tokyo are bad at giving directions

D.too many famous companies have their offices there
