Passage One

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

①Many of today’s most trusted sales techniques were invented over a century ago by a young merchant named Eaton in Toronto.21 When he was young, Eaton worked briefly with his brothers in small-town stores. In 1869, he set up his own shop in downtown Toronto. He had many competitors, but he was also ambitious and had a plan for success. He offered a unique style. of trade, but as was expected, all the other shopkeepers laughed at him, believing he would eventually fail. However, Eaton was not a man to be easily defeated; he came up with(To bring forth or discover ) a brand new notion of business – “Goods satisfactory, or money refunded.(to give back)” He sold all his goods at fixed prices and only for cash.23

②With a sharp sense of what the public wanted, he went out of the way(To inconvenience oneself in doing something beyond what is required.不怕麻烦地:超出要求之外做某事而使自己麻烦) to meet their needs. His business grew rapidly. He set up new branches and started mail order service that allowed people to buy from a list of his goods.

③Eaton’s list—advertisements of his day—was the first of its kind. It was distributed and read all over the country. It was the only way to access good-quality goods at reasonable prices for people living far away from big cites.25 It became part of their life. They even called it The Wishing Book. The secret of the list’s success was that Eaton gained the respect of these customers22; they trusted him for good prices and quality goods. Probably because he remembered his miserable early days in Ireland, Eaton thought much of the welfare of his employees: better working conditions, shorter weekday(除了周日或者除了周六周日)hours than his competitors and Saturday afternoons off in the summer. In all this, he was a leader.

21. The best description of Eaton is that ______.

A. he was the richest merchant in Toronto

B. he was a successful technical inventor

C. he introduced new sales practices

D. he changed people’s ideas about businessmen

When the Group of Seven was founded in 1920, the artists hoped for recognition of their wo
rks and ideas. In the catalog to their first exhibition, they actually invited adverse criticism -- only because what they feared most was indifference. At a time when Canada was coming into its own, they felt that a major factor in the development of a strong and healthy nation was a vi tall and relevant art. They hoped that their works would make a significant contribution to the evolution of a truly Canadian art tradition. Therefore, be hind the Group's desire to paint the Canadian landscape lay the genuine con eviction that it was the northern landscape that represented and expressed the country's unique character. It was this concept that was to capture the image nation of so many Canadians.

Today there is every indication that the Group attained its goals. These artists achieved widespread popular success and acclaim, and their works have been honored with exhibitions, degrees, and medals; reproduction of their works can be found on everything from posters to postage stamps.

As frequently happens with popular trends, there has been a tendency to romanticize the accomplishments of the Group, which has inevitably caused many misconceptions to develop. The most common of these is the popular belief that the Group of Seven was violently criticized in the first Group shows. However, the truth of the matter is that the reviews for these early shows were nearly all favorable.

What does the passage mainly discuss?

A.The origin of Canadian traditions,

B.The seven symbols of Canada.

C.Popular trends in Canadian art.

D.A group of seven Canadian artists.

The success story started in northern Italy towards the end of the Second World War. Leone
Benetton had a bicycle rental (租赁) business in the town of Treviso. He wanted his oldest son Luciano to study and become a doctor. After Leone died, the family was poor and Luciano decided to leave school and get a job. He found work in a clothing store but soon had his own ideas and started a family clothing company producing colorful woolen sweaters for people only used to wearing dull colors. Shops selling only Benetton sweaters opened in many Italian cities and by 1974 there were stores in France, Germany and Belgium.

It was clear that at this stage the success of the Benetton business lay in the strength of the family. In 1975 Luciano married the 20-year-old Marina Salomon who worked in one of his shops. After careful research, Benetton opened his first shop in the USA, in Manhattan, New York, where it attracted some very special customers including Princess Diana and Jackie Onassis. In 1982 Luciano was introduced to Oliviero Toscani, the photographer who was to change the image (形象) of Benetton forever.

Although Benetton was growing very quickly, they needed an international image and for this reason in the early 1980s they decided to provide money for Formula 1 motor racing. This was followed by the advertising campaigns (广告攻势) for which the company became famous.

Luciano Benetton succeeded in turning the company he started in the 1950s into one of the world's most successful businesses but he paid a high personal price. He spent so much of his life working and traveling that he lost touch with his family and friends.

What did Luciano Benetton's father hope he would do?

A.Sell clothes.

B.Build a factory.

C.Learn medicine.

D.Run a bicycle business.
