Mr. Long was only thirty but drank for thirteen years. He spent much time in the restauran
ts and often drunk a lot there. He had a rich sister who often supplied him enough money. So he was never worried about food or clothes.

Once a young man began to work in his company. They met at a party and introduced themselves to each other. Mr. Long knew his name was Mr. Kidd and he came from another city. The young men liked to drink too and they became good friends. They always met in the restaurant at weekend and didn't leave there until they were drunk. Of course it was bad for their health. Their friends advised them to stop drinking, but they didn't listen.

It was Saturday again. Mr. Long called his friend and they decided to spend the evening in the restaurant. Mr. Kidd agreed to his opinion and got there in time. They drank one glass after another and they didn't stop until the men in the restaurant refused to sell the wine to them. They came out together and sat down at the side of the street.

Pointing at the moon, Mr. Kidd said, "Your sun is smaller than ours!"

"We have a bigger one, "said Mr. Long "But I wouldn't show it to you."

"I'll buy it for all the jewelry in world, "called out the first drunkard(醉鬼).

"What makes you think I'll sell it to you? the other drunkard asked in reply(反问).

Mr. Long began to drink when he was ______.

A.thirteen

B.sixteen

C.seventeen

D.eighteen

Although I had left school against the advice of my teachers, I had, without telling a
nyone, tried to continue my studies in literature (文学) at evening classes. It was a tiresome walk from one end of the city to another and to sit among adults was uninteresting. I was the youngest in the class, so the friendship I knew at school was absent, I put up with it for a short period. It was too long a walk on cold winter's nights and it was hard to put my heart into Shakespeare with wet shoes and trousers. So I continued reading books and started writing poetry at home. By chance, I won some prizes and award (奖励) for literature. A young woman from a TV com-pany came to the college one day. She told me that I had won a national poetry award. I stared at her in astonishment and disbelieved her. She wanted to make a short film about me, to which I said: "No, I couldn't do that. "Not that I had any real excuse, I was just frightened. In the end she persuaded me that I should do it the following.

1.The writer did not feel comfortable at the evening school because__________ .

A. he found it difficult to make friends with his classmates

B. he had to walk a long distance to the evening school

C. he could not put his heart into reading books after he was caught in the rain

D. all of the above

A、wanted to make his success known to the public

B、came to make friends with him

C、invited him to make a speech

D、came to tell him that he had become a very important person

If you feel tired all the time, you don't necessarily need to go to bed earlier. The solut
ion could be as simple as taking a five-minute afternoon nap. Children under five have an abundance of energy and one of the reasons is because they nap once or twice a day.. Many sleep experts think we are programmed to take a nap during the day, and getting back into this habit can be a solution for those who feel tired all the time. Professor Criss Ezekosky of the Sleep Advisory and Assessment Center thinks that one can feel refreshed after just five minutes' sleep and research has shown that concentration and attention are improved after even a short nap.' Sleep is genetically programmed in babies and it's only as we get older that we learn to sleep about 8 hours at night and not at all during the day. But most research suggests that we arc not physically designed to sleep for one long single block. Before the working day became 9~00 to 5:00, all western sleep patterns were all broken up. Research has shown that in the Middle Ages people's sleep quite often occurred in 3 distinct parts. A nap in the afternoon, an early evening nap and another longer sleep until dawn. So if you do find yourself feeling sleepy through the day, don't feel your being lazy by giving in to sleep and having a nap. Your increased energy and alertness will make the rest of your day extra productive.

Children under five have abundant energy partly because they ______.

A.sleep !n three distinct parts.

B.have many five-minute naps.

C.sleep in one long block.

D.take one or two naps daily.
