As an example of how this works ,when facial tissues were first put on the market in 1924 ,they were made in limited quantities and sold at 65 cents per box of 200. People liked these facial tissues immediately and began asking for them when they went into different stores. Because there was such a demand for the product, manufacturers began making tissues in larger and larger quantities. Because the manufacturers were making tissues in greater quantities, their production costs were lowered, so that the cost of tissues went down.In the meanwhile, the quality of facial tissues was constantly improving, because more manufacturers went into the business of making tissues and each manufacturer strove to make his product better than his competitors. Today, instead of costing 65 cents, a box of 200 facial tissues costs around one-third of that price, and they are both softer and stronger.
When people are free to compete--when they are free to make more things and make them better--everyone benefits.

English speakers are always creating new words, and we are often able to know where most words come from. Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They did not speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered, "We come from Hamburg." One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of beef like those which the men from Hamburg ate. Then he put them between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called "hamburgers". Today, "hamburgers" are sold in many countries around the world.
Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is very interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. The explanation, for most English words, can be found in any large English dictionary.
According to the author, English is______.
A.as old as Chinese
B.older than German
C.not so old as Chinese
D.very difficult to learn
听力原文: I didn't know the city at all and what is more, I couldn't speak a word of the language. However, I decided to try out the pleasure of adventure. I got on a bus and it took me to a place that appeared to be a suburb.
I was fascinated by its pure natural scenery and the little book-stores I found in back streets. Time passed quickly and it was time to go back to my hotel for lunch. After walking aimlessly for some time, I determined to ask the way.
I first asked a friendly-looking newspaper-seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he thrust the paper into my hands. Hopelessly, I gave him the money and went on my way. The next person I asked was an old lady buying vegetables. She was very hard of hearing. I kept repeating the name of the street into her ear. When she finally heard me, she seemed to take offence and began shouting and shaking her walking-stick at me. I hurried away quickly. In frustration, I was overwhelmed with the delight of seeing a policeman on the comer. Gently he took me by the arm and pointed left and right and left again. I nodded politely and began walking in the direction he pointed. About an hour later I found myself between large fields of green crops. I had come all the way into the country.
