CIn hopes of becoming millionaires, many Filipinos (菲律宾人) began drinking more Pepsi. They hoped to get a bottle cap with the winning number on it. In May 1992, the number was announced: 349. Thousands rushed to get their reward with their bottle caps worth a million pesos (about US $ 40,000) each.

But Pepsi wouldn’t pay. The company said there was a mistake. The numbers on the caps did not include a security code (保险号), so the caps were not really winners. Up to 800,000 bottle caps had the number 349.

Pepsi has spent millions of dollars on the problem. The company has paid 54 million pesos to real winners. It also paid 500 pesos for each No. 349 cap without the security code.

第44题:Which of the following is not true?

[A] All those who got the number of 349 got some money.

[B] All those who got the number of 349 didn’t get the same amount of money.

[C] None of those who get the number of 349 wasn’t rewarded.

[D] The company made a mistake so as to sell more Pepsi.

听力原文: Most worth-while careers require some kind of specialized training. Ideally, therefore, the choice of an occupation should be made even before the choice of-a curriculum in high school. However, most people make several job choices during their working lives, partly because of economic and industrial changes and partly to improve their positions. The "one perfect job" does not exist. Young people should therefore enter into a broad flexible training program that will fit them for a field of work rather than for a single job.

Unfortunately many young people, knowing little about the occupational world or themselves, choose their lifework on a hit-or-miss basis. Some drift from job to job. Others stick to work in which they are unhappy and for which they are not fit.

One common mistake is choosing an occupation for its real or imagined prestige. Too many studentsor their parents choose the professional field, disregarding both the relatively small proportion of workers in the professions and the extremely high educational and personal requirements. The imagined or real prestige of a profession or a "white-collar" job is no good reason for choosing it as a life's work. Moreover, these occupations are not always well paid. Since a large proportion of jobs are in mechanical and manual work, the majority of young people should give serious consideration to these fields.

Before making a choice, a person should have a general idea of what he wants out of life and how hard he is willing to work for it. Each occupational choice has its demands as well as its rewards.

According to the passage, the economic and industrial changes as well as people's desire to improve their positions can usually lead to______.

A.the existence of "one perfect job"

B.the increase in t. raining programs

C.the changes in training programs

D.the decrease in the number of worth-while careers

The appeal of advertising to buying motives can have both negative and positive effects.

Consumers may be convinced to buy a product of poor quality or high price because of an advertisement. For example, some advertisers have appealed to people's desire for better fuel economy for their cars by advertising automotive products that improve gasoline mileage. Some of the products work. Others are worthless and a waste of consumers' money.

Sometimes advertising is intentionally misleading. A few years ago a brand of bread was offered to turned out that the bread was not dietetic (适合于节食的), but just regular bread. There were fewer calories because it was sliced very thin, but there were the same number of calories in every loaf.

On the positive side, emotional appeals may respond to a consumer's real concerns. Consider fire insurance. Fire insurance maybe sold by appealing to fear of loss. But fear of loss is the real reason for fire insurance. The security of knowing that property is protected by insurance makes the purchase of fire insurance a worthwhile investment for most people. If consumers consider the quality of the insurance plans as well as the message in the ads, they will benefit from the advertising.

Each consumer must evaluate her or his orca situation. Are the benefits of the product important enough to justify buying it? Advertising is intended to appeal to consumers, but it does not force them to buy the product. Consumers still control the final buying decision.

Advertising can persuade the consumer to buy worthless products by______.

A.stressing their high quality

B.convincing him of their low price

C.maintaining a balance between quality and price

Directions: In this section, you will hear 3 short passages. At the end of each passage, you will hear some questions. Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a question, you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A, B, C and D.

听力原文: On the 15th of February, 1989, an instant survey was carried out among 18 overseas postgraduate students. 11 students were male and 7 were female. The purpose of the survey was to discover the views of the students on a number of matters of personal concern. The survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire given to the students to complete. There were 5 questions. The first question concerned favourite colour and the second, favourite number. The next 3 questions were all concerned with aspects of marriage. No. 3 looked at the ideal age to get married, No. 4 examined the qualities looked for in a partner and No. 5 asked about the ideal number of children. The main findings were as follows. Blue was the most popular colour. This was followed by Green and Purple. There was no real significance in the choice of lucky number. About one third of the students said that they had none. 61 percent of the students selected the age group 26 to 30 years as ideal for marriage, followed by 21 to 25 years. In looking at the most important qualities in an ideal partner, some hoped the person to be Intelligent, others chose Natural, still others indicated Attractive and Honest. The ideal number of children was 2, followed by 3. It is not easy to reach any definite conclusions based upon such a small sample of students from such widely different backgrounds. However, it is clear that the majority favour 26-30 as the ideal age to get married to an intelligent partner, and producing 2 children.

(27)

A.To discover the students' study habits.

B.To discover how many students wanted to get married.

C.To discover the subjects that the students were interested in.

D.To discover the students' opinions on some matters of personal concern.
