Case: 2 Source: Moers, Ellen. "Female Gothic: The Monster's Mother." Frankenstein. Ed. J. Paul Hunter. New York and London: W. W. Norton, 1996. 214. "In Gothic writings fantasy predominates over reality, the strange over the commonplace, and the supernatural over the natural, with one definite authorial intent: to scare. Not, that is, to reach down into the depths of the soul and purge it with pity and terror (as we say tragedy does), but to get to the body itself, its glands, epidermis, muscles, and circulatory system, quickly arousing and quickly allaying the physical reactions to fear." Student Writing Sample # 1 According to Ellen Moers, Gothic writings "get to the body itself, its glands, epidermis, muscles, and circulatory system, quickly arousing and quickly allaying the physical reactions to fear" (214). Does this writing sample use sources correctly?

All over the world men and women and boys and girls enjoy sports. Sports help people to li
ve happily as well as keep fit. Today I' d like to say something about one of the most popular sports--jogging. The National Adult Physical Fitness Survey showed that 6.5 million adult Americans jog for exercise. The popularity of jogging has been heightened by medical claims of the benefits derived from regular participation in this activity. Regular jogging is credited with promoting a "training effect" that conditions the heart to do more work with less effort; increases the efficiency of the respiratory system by strengthening the muscles that as sist breathing; increases blood volume in the body, thereby increasing the oxygen - carrying capacity of the circulatory system; promotes blood vessel flexibility; aids the digestive system; and helps to maintain proper body weight through the high calorie expenditure. It is reasonable to assume that the number of adult joggers will increase if this activity is properly taught and encouraged through school physical education programs. Children should be taught how to jog as well as to understand the benefits that result from regular jogging; h is recommended that motivational programs such as the National Varsity Club Sport Award be utilized to pro vide added 'incentive for school jogging programs, In addition to learning the physiological effects of training noted above, students should be given the following information as guidelines for their personal jogging pro grams. When jogging, run in an upright position, avoiding the tendency to lean. Keep your back as straight as you can and still remain comfortable, and keep head up. Don't look at your feet.

Hold arms slightly away from body, with elbows bent so that forearms are approximately parallel to the ground. Occasionally shaking and relaxing the arms and shoulders will help reduce the tightness that some times develops while jogging. Periodically taking several deep breaths and blowing them out completely will also help you to relax.

It is best to land on the heel of the foot and rock forward so that you drive off the ball of the foot for your next step.. If this proves difficult, try a more flat - footed style. Jogging only on the balls of the feet, as in sprinting, will produce severe leg soreness.

Keep steps short, letting foot strike the ground beneath the knee instead of reaching to the front. Length of stride should vary with your rate of speed. Breathe deeply with mouth open. Do not hold breath. If for any reason you become unusually tired or uncomfortable, Slow down, walk, or stop.

How many adult Americans jog for exercise according to The National Adult Physical Fitness Survey ?

A.5.5 million.

B.6.5 million.

C.7.5 million.

D.8.5 million.

Directions: In this section you sill hear a mini-lecture. You will hear the lecture ONCE ONLY. While listening, take notes on the important points. Your notes will not be marked, but you will need them to complete a gap-filling task after the mini-lecture. When the lecture is over, you will be given two minutes to check your notes, and another ten minutes to complete the gap-filling task on ANSWER SHEET ONE. Use the blank sheet for note-taking.

听力原文: Well now, let's have a look at body systems, I'm going to run through them all very quickly and then we can have a look at them in detail. Now first, ah, have a look at the illustration showing some of the body's organs. Now you should know most of these already. When we think of organs we usually think of the heart, lungs and kidneys. But, of course, the eyes, ears and brain are also organs and there are many more. Organs are part of the body that do a special job. Now, a group of organs working together is called a system. There are 10 main systems in the human body and they all work together to keep the body going.

Now let's have a quick look at these systems.

Now first—the skeletal system. That' s the bones and the things that hold them together, that we call connective tissues. The skeletal system is the framework of the body. It gives the body its shape and form. and it protects the heart, lungs and the brain.

The muscle system has the role of moving the body. It also pushes food through the body and makes the blood circulate.

Now you can see how these systems work together. The bones couldn't move without the muscles. And all the systems are controlled by the nervous system. This is made up of the brain, the spinal cord and the nerves. And this system controls all muscle movement. It also controls your senses and makes it possible for you to learn and remember things.

Now some people say that the nervous system is the most important system of all but that isn't really true because all the systems have to work together to keep us alive. They are all essential to life. So you can' t really say that one is more important than another.

Now, the digestive system. The stomach and the intestines are the main parts of this system. They have the job of processing food to provide energy for the body. Food is broken down to a simpler form. so that it can be absorbed into the blood. The waste products are removed from the body through the rectum at the end of the intestines.

The respiratory system consists of the windpipe and lungs and it takes air into the body. It also separates out the oxygen needed to turn the food you eat into energy for the body. The lungs also get rid of the carbon dioxide, which is collected from the cells by the blood.

The blood, the heart and all the blood vessels form. the circulatory system. Now this system carries the food and oxygen around the body. It also collects the waste from the cells and fights bacteria-germs--in the body.

The urinary system is made up of the kidneys and bladder. And this system filters certain wastes from the blood and removes them from the body as urine.

Now can you see how all these systems are working together--pouring things into the blood and filtering other things out of it—and keeping you alive?

Next is the lymphatic system. Now you probably haven't heard of this one and it's fairly hard to describe. Lymph is a clear liquid which comes from the blood. It leaves the blood vessels and moves throughout the body, picking up wastes as it goes—things that the body doesn't want. When it has done its job the lymph flows back into a large blood vessel near the neck. The wastes that it has picked up are then filtered out of the body through the blood.

The endocrine system could be called the body's chemical control. This system is made up of special glands found in many parts of the body.

We come in different colors: red, black, white, yellow and brown, have a variety of politi
cal systems, social systems, religious views or none at all; we are different intellectually, have different educational systems, different socio-economic classes; psychologically we are normal, abnormal, neurotic, psychotic, we speak different languages, and have different customs and costumes.

Studying human beings biologically and physiologically leads us to very different conclusions about how alike or different we are from each other. Very different indeed, every human being on the planet, all 5.3 billion of us, has the same number of bones, of the same type, serving the same purposes; each of us has 46 chromosomes, 23 from each parent, and these chromosomes, genes and the DNA and RNA of which they are integral parts, are in every single human being; every cell, every membrane, every tissue, and every organ is the same everywhere. We all have a heart, a circulatory system, 2 lungs, a liver, 2 kidneys, a brain and nervous system, a reproductive system, digestive and excretory systems, musculature, in short, we are the same biologically and our bodies perform. the same functions everywhere on the planet. And as we learned in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, if you prick us, any of us, "do we not bleed"? Of course we do, and

we bleed red blood no matter what the color of our skin, or the language we speak, the clothing we wear, the gods we worship, .or our geographical home. Man is of a Piece biologically; all equally effective organisms whether Amazon Indian, Australian aborigine, Parisian artist, Greek sailor, Chinese student, American astronaut, Russian soldier, or Palesfinian citizen.

Well then, you ask, how is that so many groups of people disparage other groups, persecute them, and claim superiority over them? Why is it that some groups of people still hunt animals, wear little or no clothing, have little or no technology, while others are very sophisticated in their technology, industry, transportation, communication, food gathering and storage? It is, of course, a matter of culture and the civilization that emerges and evolves from it. Though man is man everywhere, where he lives, when he lives there, with whom he lives there, all affect how he lives: that is, what he believes, what he wears, his customs, his gods, his rituals, his myths and literature, his language and his institutions. These are man-made artifacts that each group develops over time, living together, facing the same problems, needing and desiring the same things. They axe his culture, his identity.

The interactions of two powerful forces in all human life: nature (biology) and nurture (culture and civilization), shape us. Each culture has its own distinctive ways of seeing, feeling, thinking, speaking, believing, and just as no two humans are identical in all respects, so no two cultures are identical in all respects. But, wherever humans have lived and live today, there is culture with all of its elements embedded in a civilization that expresses that core of thought and feeling in its language, its institutions and other social organizations. All civilizations and the cultures that nourish them have hierarchies; social institutions, language, art of all kinds, religion or a system of spiritual beliefs of some kind, laws, customs, rituals (other than religious) and ceremonies.

A study of anthropology and make it very clear that humans have created divisions and exacerbated superficial external difference for their own ulterior purposes whether political, social, economic or religious. The truth is that we are much more alike in very basic ways than we are different. If you wear one type of garment and I wear another, we both wear some kind of garment. Our culture demands it. If you speak one language and I another, we both speak so that others will understand us; we must communicate with each other. Nothing is gained

A.Racial difference.

B.Civilization difference.

C.Cultural difference.

D.Biological difference.

Walking—like swimming, bicycling and running—is an aerobic exercise, (1) builds the capacity for energy output and physical endurance by increasing the supply of oxygen to skin and muscles. Such exercises may be a primary factor in the (2) of heart and circulatory disease.

As probably the least strenuous, safest aerobic activity, walking is the (3)acceptable exercise for the largest number of people. Walking (4) comfortable speed improves the efficiency of the cardio respiratory system (5) stimulating the lungs and heart, but at a more gradual rate (6) most other forms of exercise.

In one test, a group of men 40 to 57 years of age, (7) at a fast pace for 40 minutes four days a week, showed improvement (8) to men the same age on a 30 minute, three-day-a-week jogging program in the same period. Their resting heart rate and body fat decreased (9) . These changes suggest (10) of the important—even vital—benefits walking can (11) about.

Walking (12) burns calories. It takes 3,500 calories to gain or (13) one pound. Since a one-hour walk at a moderate pace will (14) up 300 to 360 calories. By walking one hour every other day, you can burn up a-pound-and-a-half monthly, or 18 pounds (15) —providing there is no change in your intake of food. To (16) weight faster, walk an hour every day and burn up 3 pounds a month, or 36 pounds a year.

(17) your age, right now is the time to give your physical well being as much thought as you (18) to pensions or insurance. Walking is a vital defense (19) the ravages of degenerative diseases and aging. It is nature&39;s (20) of giving you a tuneup.
