Being a good parent is harder now than it has ever been before. In pressurised modern live

s, demands to be a fulfilled individual, and a good partner and a good worker, take no account of being a good parent. We havent left space for the nurturing parents expect to provide and children need. As a result, many parents in the western world just dont work. Something will have to change. With luck, people in the future will only have children if they really want them. And that should mean that parenthood is seen as a much more positive commitment than it is now, and that parents are socially supported, and admired for doing a good job. The problem is that in the last generation or so weve come to assume that women should be able, and should want, to do everything that by tradition men have done at the same time as pretty well as everything that by tradition women have done. And its just not possible. Indeed since adopting a male agenda in life is arguably only another form. of submission (男尊女卑), quite a number of highly educated and economically privileged women are now choosing to take career breaks so as to be at home with their children for longer than that insulting 18 weeks. The most welcome trend in parenting is that men are participating more and more. Even that is not free of conflict, though. Intellectually, women want men to be equal parents and do their share. But theres often a contradictory emotional sub-text because children are the last bastion (堡垒) of distaff power (女性的权利) in the family. "I want him to help me but this is my territory and being better at it is one of the few things Ive got as a female. " Having children—especially the first child—puts a bigger strain on a couples relationship than anything else they ever do. So a future of smaller families and more people choosing not to have children at all could well leave couples closer than they are today; for many, the purpose of being together would be solely to pleasure and support each other—an interesting prospect.

Many parents in the West just dont work because______.

A.they"re tired of their work

B.they have too many pressures at work

C.they want to spend more time with their children

D.they want to relax and enjoy the life

第二篇 Mother Knows Best?

Once while being prepped (准备) for a television interview, I was chatting with the host about stay-at-home fathers. I made the point that one reason we're seeing more stay-at-home dads may be that it's no longer a given (假定的事实) that a man makes more money than his wife. Many families now take earning power into account when deciding which parent will stay home.

At that point, one of the male crew members commented, almost to himself but loud enough for my benefit, "It should be the better parent who stays home." A lot of guys say things like that. Usually it's a code for, "My wife, (read: any woman) is the better parent."

I was a stay-at-home father for eight years, so his declaration made me bristle (激动). It implied that our family's choice could only have been correct if I was a "better" parent than my wife.

I suppose an argument could have been made that when I began staying home my wife was the "better" parent: She I-Dad spent more time with Ry, could read him better and calm him more quickly. And given a choice, he'd have picked her over me. But as she was the more employable one, my wife went out to work and I looked after our son.

Because of the increased time I spent with him, I soon knew Ry well, understood what he needed and could look after him more or less as well as my wife could. Actually, the experience helped me unlock one of the world's great secrets: Women are good at looking after children because they do it. It's not because of any innate (先天的) female aptitude (天资) or a mother's instinct. It's because they put in the time and attention required to become good at the job.

Women obviously get a biological head start from giving birth and nursing, but over the long term experience is more important. When I got the experience myself, I was good, too. As good? I don't know. Who cares? Children are not made of glass. Other people are capable of looking after them besides Morn.

36 Which of the following does the first paragraph imply?

A Men like staying at home.

B The author works at a TV station.

C In more and more families the wife is earning more than the husband

D The husband is the better parent.

There is more to school education than instruction and passing knowledge. To live up to hi
s or her image, a teacher at an elementary or secondary school has to have positive influence on the pupils in terms of manners, attitudes and views of life. There is reason to claim that a teacher is a parent, consultant and role model all rolled into one. When a teacher has become someone to talk to, turn to and correspond to, his role as a friend is highlighted. Accompanied by teachers who are considerate, helpful and responsible, a child is likely to be impressed by such good qualities and eventually does the same to others. However, it is no easy job to be a successful teacher. Effective lecturing calls for experience, the sense of humor, devotion and an intimate knowledge of the subject. In China, admission to college is highly competitive, making it necessary for parents to enable their children to study under the best possible teachers to increase the chance of being admitted by well-known institutions of higher learning.
