Although genetic mutations in bacteria and viruses

can lead to epidemics, some epidemics are caused by

bacteria and viruses that have undergone no significant

genetic change. In analyzing the latter, scientists have

(5) discovered the importance of social and ecological fac-

tors to epidemics. Poliomyelitis, for example, emerged

as an epidemic in the United States in the twentieth

century; by then, modern sanitation was able to delay

exposure to polio until adolescence or adulthood, at

(10) which time polio infection produced paralysis. Previ-

ously, infection had occurred during infancy, when it

typically provided lifelong immunity without paralysis.

Thus, the hygiene that helped prevent typhoid epidemics

indirectly fostered a paralytic polio epidemic. Another

(15) example is Lyme disease, which is caused by bacteria

that are transmitted by deer ticks. It occurred only spo-

radically during the late nineteenth century but has

recently become prevalent in parts of the United States,

largely due to an increase in the deer population that

(20) occurred simultaneously with the growth of the suburbs

and increased outdoor recreational activities in the

deer’s habitat. Similarly, an outbreak of dengue hemor-

rhagic fever became an epidemic in Asia in the 1950’s

because of ecological changes that caused Aedes aegypti,

(25) the mosquito that transmits the dengue virus, to proliferate

The stage is now set in the United States for a

dengue epidemic because of the inadvertent introduction

and wide dissemination of another mosquito, Aedes

albopictus.

The passage suggests that a lack of modern sanitation would make which of the following most likely to occur?

A.An outbreak of Lyme disease

B.An outbreak of dengue hemorrhagic fever

C.An epidemic of typhoid

D.An epidemic of paralytic polio among infants

E.An epidemic of paralytic polio among adolescents and adults

听力原文: Now for the weather prospects for the next 24 hours. In northern areas, tomorrow
morning will start bright and sunny, with light westerly winds. Some clouds will come in during the morning, and by the afternoon it will be overcast, with very little sunshine, and probably some outbreak of rain. The westerly wind will change in direction to the north-west, and become rather stronger. So northern areas can expect a pleasant morning, but a dull and probably wet and windy afternoon. Temperature generally will be about 12 degrees Centigrade, so rather cold. That's the picture for the north. The picture for the south is rather different. Here it will be mainly dry. There will be some clouds, and maybe the clouds will be from the southwest, and rather light. Temperatures will be a couple of degrees higher, say fourteen or sixteen, most of the day. And that will be the pattern for the day, but in the evening and night the rather cold weather will move down from the north, so you can expect rain during the night. The out look for the weekend is that this rather cool wet weather will continue, at least through Saturday. And that's all from the weather desk.

What is the report about?

A.The weather tonight in the northern part of the country.

B.The weather yesterday in the whole country.

C.Tomorrow's weather in two parts of the country.

D.Tomorrow's weather in the southern part of the country.

Teenagers and young adults in the US are increasingly being diagnosed with skin cancer, ac
cording to doctors who warn that the development could lead to an outbreak of deadly aches on the skin as these patients get older. Doctors are especially disturbed by the numbers of younger people they are treating, which suggests that messages about avoiding the sun still aren't getting through and that the tanned skin(晒黑的皮肤) that was made popular by French designer Coco Chanel in the 1920s remains a sought-after look today.

Although doctors lack the data to know what exactly is behind the rise in skin cancers among young people, they suggest several factors: more time in the sun, improper use of sunscreens and a rise in tanning salon(阳光浴沙龙) visits. Skin doctors believe that young people are generally spending more time in the sun than their parents did and are either not using enough sunscreen or failing to apply it properly. They also claimed that many Americans, including the young, are spending more vacation hours in sunny climates than in previous decades.

In a study published in 1997 in the American Academy of Dermatology, a research team led by Dr June Robinson at Northwestern University Medical School found that during the decade ending in 1996, the number of Americans who reported at least one severe sunburn rose from 30 percent to 39 percent.

Doctors feel really worried that ______.

A.their patients will soon get older

B.adults are diagnosed with skin cancer

C.there is an outbreak of deadly aches on the skins

D.many younger people suffer from skin cancer

Here in the United States, before agricultural activities destroyed the natural balance, t
here were great migrations of Rocky Mountain locusts (Melanoplus spretus). Great migrating hordes of these insects once darkened the skies on the plains east of the Rockies where crops were often destroyed; the worst years were those from 1874 to 1877. One of these migrating swarms was estimated to contain 124 billion locusts. During another migration in Nebraska it was estimated that the swarm of locusts averaged half a mile high and was 100 miles wide and 300 miles long. Usually, these swarms take off from the ground against the wind, but, once airborne, they turn and fly with it. Warm convection (对流) currents help to lift them, often to great heights. During the great locust plagues the situation in Nebraska became so serious that the original state constitution had to be rewritten to take care of the economic problems. The new document was known as "The Grasshopper Constitution". It is now believed that these locusts were a migratory form. or phase of the lesser migratory locust, which is still common there. In this respect, the North American migratory locusts resemble their African relatives. In both regions the migratory forms arise as a result of crowding and climatic factors. Migratory forms are apparently natural adaptations which bring about dispersal when locust populations become too crowded. Fortunately for our farmers, the migratory form—the so called spretus species—no longer seems to occur regularly, although there was a serious outbreak as late as 1938 in midwestern United States and Canada. Actually, there is no reason why the destructive migratory form. might not again appear if circumstances should become favorable.

Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.The Life Cycle of Locusts.

B.Migratory Locusts in the United States.

C.Locust Plagues in Nebraska.

D.The Reproductive Capability of the Locust.
