The key concept in symbolic interactionism is that communication makes a big difference in behavior. people act on the basis of messages they receive from others, and how they understand those messages. This can be seen in a concept developed by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley known as the looking-glass serf.

By the looking-glass self, Cooley meant the self-image that each of us develops according to the messages we receive from others; we think and behave according to our understanding of those messages. If, for example, a young girl is repeatedly told that she is pretty, she will come to believe that: (1) she is in fact pretty, and (2) being pretty is an important thing in her life. Similarly, if she is told that she is not good (or not expected to be good) at certain things such as math, she will come to believe that she is not good at such things and would be better off working at things she can be successful at. The likely product is a young woman who devotes a great deal of attention to her appearance, regards being pretty as a key to success in life, and who is intimidated by anything connected with numbers.

Since we know that young girls are given messages like these, and that young boys are given different messages, we can see a good part of how sex roles are taught. There is little or no evidence of differences in what young girls and young boys can do, but the older children become, the greater the differences in the areas in which boys and girls are interested.

By considering many of the diverse functions of language it is possible to understand better the amazing complexity of verbal communication, and a brief look at the more important major theories about language can provide a much more satisfactory means of understanding how people communicate.

The functions of language are of two basic types: psychological and sociological. The psychological functions may be described as the means by which people negotiate with reality. Du Bois was a sociological and educational pioneer who challenged the established system of education that tended to restrict rather than to advance the progress of black Americans. He challenged what is called the "Tuskegee machine" of Booker T. Washington, the leading educational spokesperson of the blacks in the U. S. . A sociologist and historian, Du Bois called for a more determined and activist leadership than Washington provided.

Unlike Washington, whose roots were is southern black agriculture, Du Bois's career spanned both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. He was a native of Massachusetts, received his undergraduate education from Fisk University in Nashville, did his graduate study at Harvard University, and directed the Atlanta University Studies of Black American Life in the South. Du Bois approached the problem of racial relations in the United States from two dimensions: as a scholarly researcher and as an activist for civil rights. Among his works was the famous empirical sociological study, The Philadelphia Negro : A Social Study, in which he examined that city's black population and made recommendations for the school system. Du Bois's Philadelphia study was the pioneer work on urban blacks in America.

Du Bois had a long and active career as a leader in the civil rights movement. He helped to organize the Niagara Movement in 1905, which led to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) , established in 1909. From 1910 until 1934, Du Bois edited The Cri- sis, the major journal of the NAACP. In terms of its educational policy, the NAACP position was that a// American children and youth should have genuine equality of educational opportunity.
