听力原文:When Rome emerged as a world power, the difficulties of making a calendar were we

听力原文: When Rome emerged as a world power, the difficulties of making a calendar were well known, but the Romans complicated their lives because of their superstition that even numbers were unlucky. Hence their months were 29 or 31 days long, with the exception of February, which had 28 days. However, four months of 31 days, seven months of 29 days, and one month of 28 days added up to only 355 days. Therefore the Romans invented an extra month called Mercedonius of 22 or 23 days. It was added every second year.

One year, made 445 days long by imperial decree, brought the calendar back in step with the seasons. Then the solar year (with the value of 365 days and 6 hours) was made the basis of the-calendar. The months were 30 or 31 days in length, and to take care of the 6 hours, every fourth year was made a 366-day year. Moreover, Caesar decreed the year began with the first of January, not with the vernal equinox in late March.

This calendar was named the Julian calendar, after Julius Caesar, and it continues to be the calendar of the Eastern Orthodox churches to this day.

(36)

A.shortage of days.

B.superstition.

C.inability to divide the year.

D.too many months.

听力原文: Wilma Rudolph was called "the Black Pearl "and "the fastest woman in tile world". In 1960 ,Wilma Rudolph became the first American woman to win three gold medals in one Olympics. She was an extraordinary American athlete.

(29) Wilma Rudolph was born in 1940, in Saint Bethlehem, Tennessee. She was born too early and only weighed two kilograms. Her left leg was damaged because of illnesses. When she was six years old, she began to wear metal leg braces because she could not use that leg. Since she was sick most of the time, her brothers and sisters all helped to take care of her. Soon, her family's attention and care showed results. By the time she was nine years old, she no longer needed her leg braces.

Wilma Rudolph went to her first Olympic Games when she was sixteen years old and still in high school. She competed in the nineteen fifty-six games in Melbourne, Australia. She was the youngest member of the United States team. (30) She won a bronze medal, in the sprint relay event.

(31) In 1960, Wilma Rudolph went to the Olympics again, this time in Rome, Italy. She won two gold medals—first place—in the one hundred meter and the two hundred meter races. (32) She set a new Olympic record of twenty-three point two seconds for the two hundred meter dash.

Her team also won the gold medal in the four hundred meter sprint relay event, setting a world record of forty-four point five seconds. These three gold medals made her one of the most popular athletes at the Rome games. These victories made people call her the "world's fastest woman".

听力原文: Architecture is to building as literature is to the printed word. The best buildings are often so well constructed that they outlast their original use. They then survive not only as beautiful objects, but as documents of the history of cultures. These achievements are never wholly the work of individuals. Architecture is a social art.

The revival of classical culture brought about an entirely new age, not only in philosophy and literature but in the visual arts as well. In architecture, the principles and styles, of ancient Greece and Rome were brought back to life and reinterpreted. They remained dominant until the 20th century.

Many kinds of stone are used as building materials. Stone and marble were chosen for important monuments because they are not burnable and can be expected to endure. Stone architecture was often blended with stone sculpture. The use of stone has declined, however, because a number of other materials are more adaptable to industrial use.

The complexity of modern life calls for a variety of buildings. More people live in mass housing and go to work in large office buildings; they spend their income in large shopping centres, send their children to many different kinds of schools, and when they are sick they got? specialized hospitals and clinics. All these different types of buildings accumulated experiences needed by their designers.

By the middle of the 20th century, modem architecture, which was influenced by new technology and mass production, was dealing with increasingly complex social needs. Important characteristics of modem architectural works are expanses of glass and the use of reinforced concrete.

(30)

A.A government document.

B.A literary work.

C.A social art.

D.An individual's creation.
