听力原文: It may seem strange that we're discussing music from a Broadway production in this class, "The Lion King" especially, since it's based on a popular Hollywood movie. I mean music performed for Broadway theater in the heart of New York city surely would seem to be in the western tradition of popular music and not have much in common with the music we have been studying in this course, such as gamelan music of Indonesia, or Zulu chants of South Africa, music that developed outside the western tradition of Europe and America. But in fact, musicians have a long-standing tradition of borrowing from one another's cultures. And this production's director intentionally included both western and non-western music. That way, some of the rhythms, instruments, harmonies typical of non-western music contrast with and complement popular music more familiar to audiences in North America and Europe, music like rock, jazz or Broadway style. show tunes. So I want to spend the rest of this class and most of the next one on the music from the show "The Lion King" as a way of summarizing some of the technical distinctions between typical western music and the non-western music that we've been studying. Now the African influence on the music is clear, the story takes place in Africa. So the director got a South African composer to write songs with a distinctly African sound. And the songs even include words from African languages. But we'll get hack lo the African influence later. First let's turn to the music that was written for the shadow puppet scenes in "The Lion King", music based on the Indonesian music used in the shadow puppet theater of that region.

What is the speaker talking about The Lion King?

A.The sound effect in the film version of The Lion King.

B.The music tracks in the Broadway version of The Lion King.

C.The western tradition of popular music in The Lion King.

D.The African languages in The Lion King.

because you actually built the problem in from the start. It's vital that each member of the team knows exactly what it is he or she is supposed to contribute. You won't get a good whole if the parts aren't put together properly. If members are from different departments, they'll have different expectations, which need to be dealt with.

听力原文: In the United States, couples usually receive gifts from their relatives and friends when they get married. Sometimes a bride will exchange a gift for something else if she doesn't find it useful. We give gifts to express our good wishes for the marriage, but gifts aren't necessary for the marriage itself. However, in some societies gifts are very important, and the marriage isn't legal without them. One type of gift is called bride service. A young husband must work for his wife's family. He may work for as long as fifteen years or until the third child is bom. Bride service may seem strange to us, but it is necessary in societies where people don't have money or material things to exchange at marriage.

(20)

A.She will ask for another gift

B.She will exchange it for something useful

C.She will return it to the giver

听力原文: It was not until one hundred and fifty years ago that scientists learned about the existence of dinosaurs. Thanks to an English doctor and his wife, the door was opened to this zoological study. Reasoning that these animals' tremendous size must have made them terrible creatures, scientists combined two Greek words, deimos, meaning terrible, and sauros, meaning lizards, to form. the word dinosaur.

After many years of study, they determined that these beasts roamed the earth for millions of years, and ceased to exist some sixty million years ago.

Unbelievable as it may seem, not all dinosaurs were carnivorous, that is, meat eating. Many were herbivorous, or vegetarians.

By reassembling the bones found at digging sites, scientists have been able to reconstruct the skeletons and learn great deal about the dinosaur's living conditions. They have learned that dinosaurs inhabited not only the land, but also the water and sky.

(33)

A.Beasts.

B.Herbivorous.

C.Carnivorous.

D.Dinosaurs.

听力原文: We usually think of history as the story of important people and events, but some historians are also interested in the daily lives of ordinary people. We can get this kind of information from written documents like diaries and town records, of course, but strange as this may seem—we can also learn a lot from studying old family portraits. Family portraits provide clues about things like the size of the family and the hobbies and tastes of family members. The number of children in a portrait, for example, indicates the size of the family; the types of clothing family members wore for the portrait suggest the popular fashions of the time. The objects that children hold in their hands can give clues about the games they played and their hobbies. The background of a family portrait gives historians an idea of room size and furnishings and even the wealth and social position of the family. All of these details help historians understand more about the everyday lives of some of the ordinary people from the past.

(33)

A.Portraits as clues to our past.

B.Twentieth century photographers.

C.Prominent families in recent history.

D.A new generation of artists.

听力原文: Hello, Dave, it's Sam calling from the logistics warehouse. Sorry to be an inconvenience to you, but when I left the head office this morning, I forgot a bag of samples that I was supposed to pass on to the material buyers. I was informed that you would be visiting the warehouse this afternoon, and if it's not too much trouble, I was wondering if you could bring the samples I left in your room with you when you come. On another note, there are a couple of purchase authorizations I'd like you to look over. They seem a little bit out of the ordinary, and I was wondering if you could keep me up to speed on the latest purchasing arrangements. I suspect there has been a couple of irregular purchases that may cause us to have an overabundance of stock in our inventory that we may have to have a clearance sale later this year, and I'd like to reduce this risk as much as possible if I can.

What is the main purpose of the call?

A.To inform. Dave of an upcoming inventory sale.

B.To ask Dave to deliver something.

C.To request a sample of the item.

D.To meet with one of their clients.
