James Joyce's novels_______.

James Joyce
James Joyce's novels flout the accepted conventions of the novel form. prior to him. The time factor becomes elastic and consciousness takes over and dictates the sequence of events. Plot and character emerge in a stream of association that carries on its ripples all the mental flotsam and jetsam that in the "ordinary" novel do not rise to the surface. In addition, Joyce employed language like a musical notation, that is, the sound superficially supersedes the sense, but in reality communicates (like music) profundities which conventional words cannot hope to express. That, at any rate, is what Joyce intends, but not many readers can go along with him all the way. Of the value of his experiment with his elaborate system of analogy there can be no doubt, and he conducts the experiment brilliantly, but it is self-evident that further analogy must turn back on itself. There can be no development after a certain point is reached, and that point is reached in Finnegans Wake. Joyce's peculiar achievement has been to translate to the art of writing the conception and technique of the art of musical composition.
According to this passage, James Joyce's greatest contribution is
A.that he flouts the accepted conventions of the novel form.
B.that the conception and technique of the musical art is employed.
C.that his best known book Ulysses was banned in Britain and the U. S.
D.that consciousness takes over and dictates the sequence of events.
SECTION B ENGLISH TO CHINESE
Directions: Translate the following text into Chinese.
But in general, the United States was founded upon European, and especially British, precedents. Culturally speaking, America might be called a European colony. However, to say so is to draw attention to the complexity of the American scene. No other colony has been so heterogeneously populated, or so long politically independent or Europe. No other country whose origins lie in Europe has had so sharp an awareness of its cleavage from, and superiority to, its parent cultures. Running through American history, and therefore through American literature, is a double consciousness of Old World modes and New World possibilities. Yesterday has been dismissed and pined for; tomorrow has been invoked and dreaded. It has not been the most favourable of situations for the production of literature. As an American, the writer has distrusted Europe; as a writer, be has envied the riches available to his European counterpart. At any rate, this was true of creative literature: the novel, the poem, and the play were for a long time inhibited in the United States. By and large, critical and historical writings have flowed more easily from American pens.
Asimov was one of the leading writers of Western science fiction's Golden Age, so although his writing may not have a direct influence on writers of today, his underlying (潜在的) influence on many levels is undeniable — the famous Three Laws of Robotics, and many classic writing techniques, for example. Of course, his influence is related to the atmosphere that existed in the Golden Age; a science fiction writer today has a hard time reaching that level no matter how outstanding he or she is. Asimov's novels are marked by a fully integrated logical system, and his stories are a pleasure to read — this is the reason his novels still attract readers today. Naturally, Western science fiction has few people these days who follow Asimov' s creative methods; instead they are closely connected to mainstream artistic trends, employing large amounts of postmodern techniques. This type of science fiction has a hard time blossoming on Chinese soil. The majority of Chinese SF readers would rather read the classic works of Asimov. This is an important question that faces today' s Chinese science fiction writers.
Compared with the "Robot Series", Asimov's "Foundation Series" is a little less well-known in China. This is mostly due to the large influence of the Three Laws, and moreover, the Founda-tion novels have never been completely introduced here. In fact, the Foundation series creates an entire world, even grander than that of the "Robot Series"; this science fiction epic(史诗) had a direct influence on later Western science fiction, the most famous example being Star Wars.
We can know from the passage that the author is a______.
A.science fiction writer
B.science fiction publisher
C.high school student
D.novel translator
