听力原文: Helen was a very successful businesswoman. She had always liked nice clothes. (33)And when she had left school she worked in a shop which sold them, not far from her home. After a few experiments she showed that she was very successful at designing the sorts of things that women want to buy, so after a few years the owner of the shop, who was an old lady, offered to make her a partner. "It's something I should have done long ago," she told Helen with a smile. Helen was very pleased, of course, (34)and when the old lady retired, Helen bought her share and became the sole owner of the shop. Now she had her independence. Ever since she had started in the shop she had have to travel around to see what attractive things her rivals in the clothes trade were producing, to attend fashion shows and so oil. She had always stayed at small cheap hotels, because she dared not to spend too much money when she was saving up to buy a shop of her own. But when she at last became the owner of the shop, and it was making good profits, she found that she had plenty of money, and she felt she should now stay in the best hotels whenever she traveled. (35)"Then the people who buy good clothes can see that your business is successful," she said to herself, "and therefore more of them think they should buy the clothes you make."

(34)

A.She worked in a clothing shop not far from home.

B.She did experiments not far from her home.

C.She stayed at home and designed clothes.

D.She became a partner of an old lady.

Contrary to popular belief, our framework of bones isnt a rigid and unchanging structure.
Each year, our bodies replace about 20 percent of our bones tissue, which means that our activities at every age influence their health. Sections of old bone break down, creating gaps to be filled by new bone. Until about age 30, we build bone very efficiently, so making the right health moves, such as exercising and getting enough calcium, helps your bony framework reach its genetically determined peak strength. Think of your bones as a retirement fund: The more you deposit when you re young, the better off you will be in later years, when you need to draw on your reserves. The problem is that kids prefer soda to a glass of milk: they are coming up short of the calcium and vitamin D they need to build up good health. Many of them also lead an inactive life, so they arent getting the bone-building benefits of regular exercise either. That s a problem every parent should be concerned about.

听力原文:W: What are you and Helen going to call the baby.9 You're not going to name him a
fter a whole football team, I hope.

M: No, certainly not. Nor shall we name her after eleven hockey players if she's a girl.

W: But choosing even one name is difficult. Which names have you thought of?

M: Helen wants to call the child John after me. I don't want to. My name is too plain.

W: And if a girl comes, you won't like plain Jane any better. What about Jonathan or Janet?

M: Every Jonathan I know is called Jon for short, so that's no good. Helen's an opera-lover. So we might call a daughter Carmen.

W: You could name a boy after a poet. How would you like to know someone called Dante Brown, Shakespeare Robinson or Keats Thompson?

M: Those names are old-fashioned. But up-to-date names can be worse. Some people call their children after film stars or pop stars. How dreadful to be christened Clint, Elvis, Rod or Ringo!

W: Lots of children hate the names they have been given. Why not give a child a number instead? Then he can exchange his number for a name of his own choice when he is old enough to decide himself what he would like to be called.

What is the conversation mainly about?

A.Choosing names for children.

B.Family names.

C.Up-to-date names.

D.Names of famous writers.

C.Today, a four year old who can tie his or her shoes is impressive. In colonial times, four-year-old girls knitted stockings and mittens and could produce intricate embroidery: At age six they spun wool.

D.While Westerners might take exception to eight-year-old girls working or to 12-year-old girls marrying, within their own communities such activities are seen as a normal and positive part of childhood.

The simple wooden house sits in an unremarkable old neighborhood in an Osaka suburb, the k
ind of place people forget still exists in modern Japan. There are no pachinko parlors or cyber cafes—no shops of any kind, really. Its an unlikely place to encounter the next version of Japans technological evolution. But listen to what happens when a gray-haired septuagenarian named Kazuko Komiyama returns after visiting friends, "Welcome home," a voice chirps. "Isnt it a nice day?" The high-pitched greeting belongs to a robot. Its a simple machine, to be sure. This isnt a thoughtful robotic character like those found in a Star Wars movie, or like Japans own popular creation Astro Boy. But its a robot nonetheless: a chocolate-brown wombat that eventually will be able to flutter its eyes when Komiyama, 77, enters the room and giggle when she scratches its fuzzy little head. It tells her what the weather is like. It reminds her when its time to take her medicine. It sings sweet songs to her. For Komiyama, a mechanical companion is a guard against the dreadful loneliness many elderly Japanese must endure. She saw one such tragic story on a TV news show recently. "An old mans death went unnoticed because he lived alone," she says. "Day after day, his diary read, I didnt meet anybody today. Again. I dont want to end up like that. " So when welfare workers from the Osaka suburb of Ikeda asked for volunteers to test the prototype of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.s pet robot, she jumped at the chance. She keeps the robot sitting in her living room. After a month, shes starting to warm up to the thing, despite one irritating habit. "It speaks with a childish voice," she complains. "That makes me feel like Im treated as an old person. I would rather have an equal relationship with a robot. " This is modern Japan, a Gizmo Nation where even grandmothers make friends with their gadgets. For half a century, the Japanese have made it a cultural mission to turn out a succession of cool, elegant and increasingly human machines. And what machines they have become: robotic geishas; headgear that projects computer screens in midair in front of wearers eyes; toilets that measure a persons weight, body fat and urine sugar levels. The country that gave the world transistor radios, the Walkman and hand-held videogames is now positioned to turn its love of gadgetry into a profitable national enterprise once again.

We can learn from the first paragraph that______.

A.it is impossible for people to find high-tech robots in a simple wooden house

B.it is easy for people to think of a simple wooden house in the modern Japan

C.Komiyama usually goes to a coffee restaurant to release her loneliness

D.Komiyama has a mechanical companion whose voice is very sharp and short

听力原文:M: Hi, Helen, I've been looking for you!

W: Really? Such a coincidence. I am also looking for you.

M: You don't know how difficult it is to find a car I want.

W: Have you been to the second-hand market?

M: Yes, but... didn't you tell me that when cars get older they get cheaper?

W: Sure! What happened?

M: I called in response to an ad yesterday for a very old car. It was priced somewhere over $10,000! Do you think I can get anything for $3,500?

W: Sure. I just heard about something I've wanted to talk to you about.

M: Oh, that's why you are looking for me, isn't it?

W: Yeah. My uncle's mother-in-law is 86 now, and recently her eyesight became very bad. That means she can't drive anymore, but she's got a 1978 Buick Century that would be perfect for you. M: Is it still good? How much do you think she wants?

W: It's really very good — only 43,000 miles on it. There's no rust on it, and the interior is like new. But there is certainly something wrong with it: it needs a tune-up, a new set of tires and if you buy it you'd better put all new hoses and ignition wires on it. They crack when they get old.

M: Anything else?

W: Maybe in about 10,000 miles the brakes would need attention.

M: That sounds like quite a bit of expense already!

W: But look, everything it needs will probably cost $500 or less. You could buy it for $2,150, I'm sure. So for a lot less than the $3,500 or so, you'd have a really good car that would last for years. M: It sounds better when you put it that way. When can I see it?

W: How about right now?

M: All right. Let's go.

Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

19. What kind of a car does the man plan to buy?

20. Why can't the old lady drive anymore?

21. What do we learn about the car the woman recommends?

22. How much does the man need to spend on the car?

(23)

A.A cheap new car.

B.An extravagant new car.

C.An old Buick Century.

D.A used car that's a bargain.
