听力原文: Today, I want to talk to you about information technology. Some of you know that before I came to IBM, my background was a lot like yours. I was a customer of IBM. I was a customer of the computer industry. I arrived at IBM with a firmly held conviction that this technology was one of those transformational technologies that comes along every hundred years or so and changes everything in our society.

Today, in almost every industry, in almost every part of the world, there are many examples of enterprises using technology to challenge their competitors. I think we're seeing information technology reach the point that all transformational technology reach when they are no longer controlled by just a small group of skilled professionals, and they cross over to mass acceptance and ubiquity.

Networking technology is still in its infancy, yet it has already reached the point where we can call it a new mass medium.

Less than 5 years after the birth of the World Wide Web, some 90 million people are online around the world, and that number will be hundreds of millions before too long.

Here in China, the number of Internet users has nearly doubled since just last October. And I've seen statistics that say your Internet population will exceed 100 million people by the year 2005.

We can infer from the speaker that

A.IBM was his first job.

B.he has left IBM.

C.he is a client of IBM.

D.he's a member of IBM.

听力原文: When I was in college, I won a music competition and the prize was a week at Tanglewood. Anyway it is one of the world's most famous music festivals and the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It is located in the beautiful Berkshire Hills in New England. The summer musical season consists of about fifty concerts given over about nine weeks: from July 1st through the first week in September. The biggest stars on the music scene appear here. The year I went I was lucky enough to see Leonard Bernstein conducting. I understand it is sometimes hard to get tickets but of course mine were a part of the prize. If you want to sit inside the tickets are expensive. It's much cheaper to sit outside on the lawn. But it might rain, or some nights are really cool even in the summer. Either way the sound system is excellent. So it doesn't really matter where you sit. I seem to recall that the festival got started in the 1930s. Some Berkshire residents invited a symphony orchestra to perform. a few outdoor concerts. The concerts were so successful that after a couple of years somebody donated a family estate as a permanent home. After that things really took off. And the festival has gotten bigger and better every year. Attending was such a wonderful experience.

Why did the speaker originally go to Tanglewood?

A.She went to college nearby.

B.She won a contest.

C.Her family vacationed there.

D.She was a friend of Leonard Bernstein's.

听力原文: It is a dark stormy night when suddenly the phone rings. I casually answer the telephone. It is my older sister informing me that our mother is in the hospital. She is going to need an emergency brain transplant. It takes me just a moment to drop everything I am doing and rush to the hospital. When I arrive I see my father and sister in the waiting room casually enjoying their conversation. I am amazed they could have such high spirits at such a time. As I begin to confront them on this, they inform. me that this is merely a routine brain transplant. They reinforce that very few die from the actual transplant. I become immediately relieved as a huge burden has been lifted off my shoulders. Issues of transplants, vaccines, and medicine are such that, whether anyone realizes it, they are becoming a social concern that does affect each of us. Nearly each and every one of us today has received vaccine shots. We have all used medications. We have all heard of transplant technology. This above example I have used is farfetched. Brain transplants are not an everyday occurrence. They are not yet, at least. However, kidney and heart transplants are beginning to become a more and more common every day. Who knows what is possible with the proper research.

Why did the speaker drop everything at the time?

A.Because she received a telephone call at midnight.

B.Because her mother was sent to a hospital.

C.Because her older sister was seriously ill.

D.Because her father was sent to a hospital.

听力原文: My father woke me up early one morning when I was fourteen and announced "Get up, you are going with me to cut grass." I felt proud and excited because my father thought I was responsible enough to help him in his business. Actually, that first day was very hard. From sunrise to sunset, my father, my younger brother and I cut and cut very large yards in well-to-do part of the city. By the end of the day I was exhaust- ed, but I felt good. I put out a hard day's labor and earned six dollars. One day, my father spotted some weeds I had missed cutting and pulled me inside. "Chat that section again!' he said firmly "and don' t make me have to tell you again." The message was very dear. Today I stress the importance of doing the job right the first time. Every job I have held from cutting lawns to washing dishes to working a machine on the construction site, I have learned something that help me in my next job. If you work hard enough, you can learn from any job you do.

The speaker felt ______ when his father asked him to help cut grass.

A.anxious and worried

B.proud and excited

C.nervous and confused

D.inspired and confident

听力原文: To play their music well, jazz musicians don't really need to know a lot about the rules of harmony and rhythm. Of course they might have knowledge of both harmony and rhythm, but that kind of knowledge isn't what makes them good jazz musicians. What does make them good is having an intuitive feeling for how the music works. For artists in the medium of jazz, the music comes naturally. It flows almost spontaneously through them. Their music performance is not planned in advance. As they play, they don't monitor themselves in terms of a formal theory of performance. As a result, jazz is a natural expression of moods and feelings of the artists, a moment by moment expression of the self. Now you are in for a treat. I brought some recordings of my favorite jazz artists. We'll spend some time listening to some examples of really good jazz.

According to the speaker, what is the distinctive characteristic of good jazz musicians?

A.They must be rich in the knowledge of harmony and rhythm.

B.They should be enthusiastic when composing music.

C.They should follow their intuition to let the music come out naturally.

D.They would perform. the music with guidance of formal theory.

听力原文: As you know, there are too many students today who is trying to crack the puzzle of career success, do all the right things, like going to the right school, studying the right things and getting the right grades. To some extent, every student in this room is doing that.

I want you to promise yourself that, after tonight, you'll spend a little more time being selfish. Because if there isn't some "me" time in the equation, you won't be successful.

The other thing you have to do to succeed in meeting your career goals is to be prepared for a lifetime of learning. You could not think that your education is finished once you get your degree (or degrees), even if your degree is from a good school like the University of Minnesota.

This learning can involve formal training: participation in teams or task forces or new assignments. Companies today cannot be competitive in the global marketplace, unless all their people renew their old skills and develop new ones.

You need to be willing to leave your comfort zone. As Alvin Toffler said, "The illiterate of the future are not those who cannot read or write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn."

The speaker tells the students that they are not likely to succeed if they

A.are too selfish.

B.do everything as others do.

C.are not greedy enough.

D.don't get a right degree.

听力原文: A recent report has shown that here in the United States, we've experienced an evolution concerning our attitudes towards the workweek and the weekends. Although some calendars still mark the beginning of a week as Sunday, more and more of us are coming to regard Monday as the first day of the week with Saturday and Sunday comprising the two-day period thought as the weekend. In fact the word "weekend" didn't even exist in English until about the middle of the last century. In England at that time, Saturday afternoons had just been added to Sundays and holidays as a time for workers to have off from their jobs. This innovation became common in the United States in the 1920s, but as the workweek were shortened during the Great Depression of the 1930s, the weekend expanded to two full days Saturday and Sunday. Some people thought that this trend would continue due to increasing automation and the workweek might decrease to four days or even fewer. But so far this hasn't happened. The workweek seems to have stabilized as forty hours made up of five eight-hour days. After this commercial I'll be back to talk about the idea of adding Monday to the weekend.

According to the speaker, What is changing in the way people think about the week?

A.Which days people should work.

B.How the week is divided into days.

C.Which day begins the work.

D.How many weeks there are in a month.
