听力原文: Every culture has many sayings that give advice about life. These sayings are pa

rt of what is commonly called folk wisdom. Of course, folk wisdom is also expressed in other ways, such as myths, fairy tales, legends, and songs. Often however, folk wisdom is shared in the form. of short sayings about the best ways to approach life's joys and sorrows.

One characteristic of American folk wisdom is its humor. Humor makes the bitter medicine of life easier to swallow. It sometimes makes the harsh realities of life more attractive. For example, Ben Franklin's clever saying, "A full belly makes a dull brain" means "People who are well-fed or self-satisfied can become lazy and stupid." But this paraphrasing loses the elegance and humor of Franklin's original saying. Some moralists in the United States are successful because they are able to say wise things humorously.

Abraham Lincoln expressed similar opinions about life but in a different way. Lincoln continued the tradition of "horse sense" humor. This type of humor appeals to people who are hungry for practical common sense. Lincoln, both a politician and an idealist, understood the need for horse sense. He knew how to use common sense to influence people's opinion. He could take the highest moral principles or the most critical observations and use them in folksy—or simple commonsense—humor to make them better understood and more easily accepted. Take, for example, this quote, which is one of best known in the United States: "You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time." Another of Lincoln's wise, folksy statements is: "The Lord prefers common-looking people. That's why he makes so many of them."

There is no doubt that people need a little push sometimes to help them see the folly of their ways. Mark Twain used humor to reveal that many popular ideas were false, foolish, or even harmful. Twain thought that most human beings didn't examine why they believe certain things, and that they were too easily influenced by the opinions of people in power. He felt that it was easier for people to be "misled" than to be led correctly, so he tried to show the foolishness of those in power. For example, he said, "Hain't we got all the fools in town on our side and ain't that a big enough majority in any town?"

Now you may get the impression that Twain was a misanthrope, a person who saw everyone' s mistakes and never noticed their good qualities. It's true that his humor was sometimes harsh, but it was used to reveal truths about human relationships. Twain thought the result would be a better, more just society. However, he also realized that he irritated a lot of people. He was aware that when newspapers reported his death, many people might be happy to hear the news. The telegram he sent from Europe to the Associated Press is typical of his humor. It read, "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."

听力原文: Technicians are making the last-minute preparations for the launch of the U. S. space shuttle Discovery on a flight to the International Space Station. Flight officials with the space agency NASA are aware of storm clouds near the Atlantic coast launch site in Florida, which could postpone the launch. This is the second shuttle flight since Columbia disintegrated on reentry three years ago, killing all seven astronauts on board. Since then NASA has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to correct design flaw that caused a piece of foam insulation to break off from the fuel tank and puncture Columbia's wing. NASA is launching Discovery despite objections by the space agency's chief safety officer and chief engineer. They say the problems with the foam insulation have still not been resolved. Shuttle astronaut Steve Robinson says he is not worried. "The thing like this happened to every single flight and what's really great -- you remember how much we talked about culture change after Columbia. This is culture change. You are seeing it."

听力原文: Dyslexia is a term used to describe a marked difficulty in learning to read despite normal intelligence and vision. The problem is universal, but research suggests it doesn't affect every culture or language group equally. On China's mainland and in Japan, for example, dyslexia rates are estimated at less than 5 percent compared to 10 percent to 20 percent in the U.S. There are intriguing theories as to why, and Japan has produced some important clues.

Japanese children first learn to read and write in parallel phonetic alphabets, hiragana and katakana, each containing 46 characters relating to 46 different sounds. After conquering them, the student embarks on learning Chinese characters. According to Uno, who works for Japan's National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry, just 1 percent of Japanese students have dyslexic problems in reading the phonetic alphabets, while 2 percent encounter problems with Chinese characters. The numbers jump a bit when it comes to writing—2 percent for hiragana, 3.8 percent for katakana and 5 percent for ideograms—but they're still low by American standards.

The passage is about .

A.dyslexia and intelligence

B.dyslexia and culture

C.dyslexia and vision

D.dyslexia and personality

听力原文: Culture is a very broad term used to describe the arts, the beliefs, the values, the traditions, the customs, and the institutions that are considered to be characteristic of a community, a people, a region, or a nation. Culture also includes the languages and dialects that people use to express their feelings and to communicate with each other.

Although many cultures in the world have remained isolated for centuries, commerce and trade have often been source of all sorts of cultural exchanges, ranging from foods to tools. Chinese tea and other inventions reached Europe thanks to the Silk Route, for example. However, cultural exchanges have not always been fair or balanced. Throughout history, wars and political decisions have destroyed cultures and forced people to adopt the language and the customs of the dominant civilization.

It is often assumed that if a culture is technologically advanced, it must be superior or that if a culture is young it must be inferior. Every one trends to make Value judgments about other cultures. Finding fault with or making fun of other customs and beliefs is often merely a way of supporting our complacency or our pride. It is certainly much easier to learn about other cultures if one approaches them with an open mind and if one respects differences rather than criticizing them. Often something that appears strange or unusual in another culture is in fact very logical and part of a deeply rooted tradition. What might seem rude in one culture might seem perfectly normal and acceptable in another culture.

(30)

A.Through Silk Route.

B.By ship.

C.By train.

D.Through fairs.

听力原文: China and India have roughly the same population, but when it comes to mobile phones, there is no comparison between the two. In India, seven years after the launch of mobile-phone services, there are only 10 million users. In China, half that number signs up as new subscribers every month.

Geography and culture explain some of the differences. The concentration of economic activity in China's eastern coastal region gave its mobile operators big economies of scale, allowing lower prices. In China, telephones quickly came to be regarded as fashion items, something that has only recently happened to India.

But the main difference is regulation. India chose a licensing policy that divided the country into 22 regions, each with two licenses to operate mobile networks. Bidding in multiple regions was restricted. This aimed to promote competition, but led to a fragmented market with a baffling array of operators, none of which has economies of scale. Limited spectrum also hurt service quality.

Which is the most appropriate title for the passage?

A.A Comparative Study of the Telecom Industry in China and India

B.Differences on Use of Mobile Phones in China and India

C.Geographical and Cultural Differences between China and India

D.Different Regulations on Mobile Phones in China and India

听力原文:F: Mr. Smith so we were talking about rituals of cultures. And particularly the traditions abut getting married in America.

M: Yes, almost every culture has rituals to signal a change in one's life. Marriage is one of the most basic life changes for people of all cultures. So it's no surprise to find many traditions in America.

F: Like as the ceremony begins, the groom and his attendants stand with the minister, facing the audience. Music signals the entrance of the bride's attendants, followed by the beautiful bride. Nervously, the young couple repeats their vows. Traditionally, they promise to love each other "for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health".

M: But sometimes the couple has composed their own vows.

F: Right. They give each other a gold ring to symbolize their marriage commitment. Finally the minister announces the big moment: "I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride!"

M: And also the bride throws her bouquet of flowers to a group of single girls. Traditions say that the one who catches the bouquet will be the next to marry.

What must the bride and groom do on a wedding ceremony?

听力原文: The process of adjusting to life in a new country is often called "culture shock". The word culture as used here has a different meaning rather than it usually does. Frequently, the word culture pertains to music, literature, art, and higher education. Here, though, culture means the customs of a society and the way in which people interact with each other.

Every culture has certain basic ideas on which it is built and which everyone accepts as true. These are learned in childhood and are automatic to the people who live in that culture. They include everything from the common courtesies and details of daily life to the deeper issues of a person's place in society, of family, of life and death, and even of the attitude toward time and space.

When a person enters a new culture, the basic customs and ideas that he or she automatically accepted may no longer be true. There is a new set of customs and attitudes to learn about and try to understand. During this period of adjustment a person feels a great range of emotions, from happiness and excitement to loneliness, anger, discouragement, and depression. This period of "culture shock" has been described as having approximately seven stages.

(27)

A.He should start to learn the local language.

B.He should learn about and comprehend the new customs and try to adjust himself.

C.He should adapt himself to the new environment.

D.He should make efforts to restrain his emotions.

听力原文:At first glance, Japan astonishes and fascinates the American because it seems So
different. All that characterizes the United States—racial and ethnic heterogeneity, newness, vast territory, and individualistic ethic — is absent in Japan. Instead one encounters an ancient and homogeneous population, traditions that emphasize the importance of groups and communal needs, with rich panoply of highly elaborate rites and ceremonies that cover every aspect of daily living, from drinking tea to saying hello.

Where Americans pride themselves on a studied informality and openness, their Japanese counterparts employ formality and complexity. If Americans value time, the Japanese treasure space. While Americans have always enjoyed a sense of continental scale, employing metaphors of size to describe both the natural environment and industrial production, Japan has exerted its genius on the diminutive and the miniature. It seems appropriate for America to produce the world's airplanes, while Japan creates cameras and transistors.

Yet these two cultures, so apparently opposite in almost every way, have always possessed a strange affinity for each other. Like their descendants, 19th century American visitors found the world of Japanese art, philosophy, ceremonies, and social life to be compellingly attractive. One reason is its very comprehensiveness. Japan is a filled-in culture, with few imprecisions or empty spaces.

(30)

A.Differences and similarities between two cultures.

B.American culture.

C.Japanese culture.

D.The integration of two cultures.

听力原文: Ask the average American,"What is freedom?"You will probably hear,"It's being able to do what I want to do." When Americans think of freedom, they often think of individualism. They see themselves more as individuals than as members of a family or social group.

In American culture.freedom means equality. The Declaration of Independence states that"all men are created equal."That does not mean equal in abilities or status. For Americans, equality refers to equal worth and equal opportunity. Every individual should have an equal chance to improve his life.True,America has not always lived up to that ideal. For many years,Native Americans,African Americans and immigrants have protested their unequal treatment. But American culture still teaches that people can work hard and fulfill their dreams.Whether this idea is true or not, people hear rags-to-riches stories often enough to confirm it in the minds of many people.

Freedom arouses strong feelings for Americans. The idea of liberty binds people together in this"land of the free." However, problems still exist. One individual's freedom can conflict with the rights of others. Someone once said,"You have the freedom to swing your fist around if you want. But your freedom ends where my nose begins."People can also become too concerned about their own rights. They might demand special treatment. However, the path to freedom is not completely smooth.Even so,for Americans,no other road is really worth traveling.

What do Americans often think of when thinking of freedom?

A.Collectivism.

B.Equality.

C.Social group.

D.Individualism.
