Questions 20 to 23 are based on the following passage.

Traveling to another country where you know no one can be very challenging and frustrating. It’s even worse if you don’t know the language. When I had the opportunity to go to the United States to learn English, I realized how ignorant I was and how difficult a new life could be.

It was very challenging for me to get used to the language and the way people lived. On my first day of school, while entering the classroom, Mr. Erickson asked me, “What’s your name?” Very quietly and shy I replied, “Yes.”The classroom filled up with laugher. I was confused but soon I understood. It was difficult for me to get used to the accent. Whenever I wanted to ask or say something in English, the students should start laughing and making fun of me. I had trouble in school because I barely received help from my teachers and classmates. I would cry myself to sleep for almost one year.All I wanted to do was go back to Mexico because I just couldn ’t deal with things anymore. I hated school so bad.

However, throughout the years I started to improve. My writing skills increased, my pronunciation was clearer, and my grades got better. I felt so proud of myself and of what I had accomplished. My ignorance decreased by a lot. Coming here made me a better person because now I know much more. It’s difficult at the beginning of the journey but throughout time you see how things will get better sooner or later. I didn’t give up; instead I kept on trying for my parents and for myself. I wouldn’t change anything that happened to me because I believe that everything happens for a reason. Thanks to everything, I’m standing where I am.

n Cardiff I was put to work in furniture department at one of the local stores.It was larg
e, fairly out of date, run (经营 ), like its parent company in London, by a group of relatives. Being only a member of the store for a short time, I was in a very fortunate position. The others, particularly the older members of the store, were naturally asked to produce good sales figures. I was more of an observer. If I made a sale, I was pleased, but if I didn't, I would not be blamed. I was really there to observe and learn, and as I had no interest in making a position in the furniture business, I wasn’t too diligent (勤奋 ) about that either.

One salesman in late middle age once expressed his insecurity (不安全感 ) by scolding me of trying to steal one of his customers (雇客 ). Nothing could have been further from the truth, but he demanded that I go to the stockroom (货仓 ) with him to settle the matter. He was very small and thin, but to my surprise he started dancing about among the carpets and closets working his arms wildly and calling on me to put them up . I couldn’t put anything up ---I was too busy rolling on a four-foot six - inch spring mattress (弹簧垫子 ) , helpless with laughter. Finally he saw the joke too, and we went off to the members store for a conciliatory(和解 )cup of tea. Several days later, I finally left the store. Thank God!

Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? ()

A、The author only stayed in the shop for a short time because he was not interested in business

B、The author felt light - hearted when he left the shop

C、The author was punished for stealing money from the customer

D、The author was asked to put up the carpets

(课外资料)

I am very happy to share my story about breast enlargement in Thailand. Anyone who is not sure about breast enlargement should read this story first.

Firstly, I was amazed at the level of care I received at the Thailand private hospital. It was like being in a luxury hotel. The nursing staffs were also better than those who I have ever met in all my years in America. Not only were they professional, but kinder and more patient than Western nurses.

The hospital food was excellent, so I was able to choose from a large and varied Menu. In my private room, there was cable T. V., a fridge, a phone, and impressive views of Bangkok(曼谷). My Translator was able to communicate with me, and the plastic surgeons arranged the whole operation without me lifting a finger.

The operation cost me a third of the price of the U. K. With the low cost of the air tickets and a holiday, it worked out at about half UK's price, because the cost in Thailand is so cheap.

Combining a plastic surgery with a holiday in an amazing place is an unforgettable experience. From the moment I arrived in Bangkok airport, I felt relaxed and welcomed by the Plastic Surgery & Holiday team, it made me feel that I had friends here already.

1. Where did the author have her breast-enlargement operation?{A; B; C}

A. In Thailand.

B. In America.

C. In U. K.

2. Was the author satisfied with the nursing staffs for her?{A; B; C}

A. No, because they were no better than America nurses.

B. Yes, because they were more patient than Western nurses.

C. No, because the care was very poor.

3. Which of the following statement is TRUE?{A; B; C}

A. The author was content with the food in the hospital.

B. When the author was in the hospital, she lived in a public room.

C. There was cable T. V., a bridge and a phone in the author’s room.

4. What does the underlined phrase lifting a finger mean in paragraph three?{A; B; C}

A. Doing something with only one finger.

B. Helping with something.

C. Carrying something.

5. Why did the author think her experience unforgettable?{A; B; C}

A. Because she had an operation there.

B. Because she was satisfied with everything there.

C. Because she was satisfied with the service and price there.

Some of the notebooks George Washington kept as a young man are still in existence. They s
how that he was learning Latin, was very interested in the basics of good behaviour in society, and was reading English literature.

At school he seems only to have been interested in mathematics. In fact his formal education was surprisingly brief for a gentleman, and incomplete. For unlike other young Virginian gentlemen of that day, he did not go to the College of William and Mary in the Virginian capital of Williamsburg. In terms of formal training then, Washington contrasts sharply with some other early American Presidents such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. In later years, Washington probably regretted his lack of intellectual training. He never felt comfortable in a debate in Congress, or on any subject that had not to do with everyday, practical matters. And because he never learned French and could not speak directly to the French leaders, he did not visit the country he admired so much. Thus, unlike Jefferson and Adams, he never reached Europe.

What reason does the author give for Washington not going to college?

A.His family could not afford it.

B.A college education was rather uncommon in his times.

C.He didn't like the young Virginian gentlemen who went to college.

D.The author doesn't give any reason.
