Navigation computers, now sold by most car makers, cost $ 2000 and up. No surprise, then, that they are most often found in luxury cars, like Lexus, BMW and Audi. But it is a developing technology-meaning prices should eventually drop-and the market does seem to be growing.

Even at current prices, a navigation computer is impressive, It can guide you from point to point in most major cities with precise turn by-turn directions spoken by a clear human sounding voice, and written on a screen in front of the driver.

The computer works with an antenna that takes signals from no fewer than three of the 24 Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites. By measuring the time required for a signal to travel between the satellites and the antenna, the car's location can be pinned down within 100 meters.

The satellite signals, along with inputs on speed from a wheel speed sensor and direction from a meter, determine the car's position even as it moves. This information is combined with a map database. Streets, land marks and points of interest are included.

Most systems are basically identical. The differences come in hardware-the way the computer accepts the driver's request for directions and the way it presents the driving instructions. On most systems, a driver enters a desired address, motorway junction or point of interest via a touch screen or disc. But the Lexus screen goes a step further: you can point to any spot on the map screen and get directions to it.

BMW's system offers set of cross hairs that can be moved across the map (you have several Choices of map scale) to pick a point you'd like to get to. Audi's screen can be switched to TV reception.

Even the voices that recite the directions can differ, with better systems like BMW's and Lexus's having a wider vocabulary. The instructions are available in French, German, Spanish, Dutch arid, Italian, as well as English. The driver can also choose parameters for determining the route: fastest, shortest or no freeways, for example.

We learn from the passage that navigation computers ______.

A.will greatly promote sales of automobiles

B.may help solve potential traffic problems

C.are likely to be accepted by more drivers

D.will soon be viewed as a symbol of luxury

Massive changes in all of the world's deeply cherished sporting habits are underway.-Whether it's one of London's parks full of people playing softball, and Russians taking up rugby, or the Superbowl rivaling the British Football Cup Final as a televised spectator event in Britain, the patterns of players and spectators are changing beyond recognition. We are witnessing a globalization of our sporting culture.

That annual bicycle race, the Tour de France, much loved by the French, is a good case in point. Just a few years back it was a strictly continental affair with France, Belgium and Holland, Spain and Italy taking part in. But in recent years it has been dominated by Colombian mountain climbers, and American and Irish riders.

The people who really matter welcome the shift toward globalization. Peugeot, Michelin and Panasonic are multi-national corporations that want worldwide returns for the millions they invest in teams. So it does them literally a world of good to see this unofficial world championship become just that.

This is undoubtedly an economic-based revolution we are witnessing here, one made possible by communications technology, but made to happen because of marketing considerations. Sell the game and you can sell Coca Cola or Budweiser as well.

The skillful way in which American football has been sold to Europe is a good example of how all sports will develop. The aim of course is not really to spread the sport for its own sake, but to increase the number of people interested in the major money-making events. The economics of the Superbowl are already astronomical. With seats at US $125, gate receipts alone were a staggering $10,000,000. The most important statistic of the day, however, was the $ 10,000,000 in TV advertising fees. Imagine how much that becomes when the eyes of the world are watching.

So it came as a terrible shock, but not really as a surprise, to learn that some people are now suggesting that soccer change from being a game of two 45-minute halves, to one of four 25-minute quarters. The idea is unashamedly to capture more advertising revenue, without giving any thought for the integrity of a sport which relies for its essence on the flowing nature of the action.

Moreover, as sports expand into world markets, and as our choice of sports as consumers also grows, we will demand to see them played at a higher and higher level. In boxing we have already seen numerous, dubious world title categories because people will not pay to see anything less than a "World Title" fight, and this means that the title fights have to be held in different countries around the world!

Globalization of sporting culture means that ______.

A.more people are taking up sports

B.traditional sports are getting popular

C.many local sports are becoming international

D.foreigners are more interested in local sports

听力原文:M: Hello. I need to talk with someone about my driver's license.

W: Yes. How may I help you? Do you have a driver's license, or do you need to get one?

M: Well, I'm not sure. You see, I have an international driver's license.

W: Uh-huh. And how long will you be staying in the United States?

M: Probably four years, until I finish my degree.

W: Oh. Then you will need to get in Arizona driver's license.

M: Do I have to take a driver's test to do that?

W: Yes, you do. You need to come in and take a written exam and an eye exam, and then you need to take a road test with a parallel parking test. Did you say that you are a student?

M: Yes, I'm a student at the university. I don't have an ID with me, but I can go and get it.

W: Okay. Then you can apply for a limited license. Just come back and show your student ID, and you can apply for a five-year license. The limited license only costs you ten dollars. A regular license would cost you a lot more than that, but it is valid for more than five years.

M: Why can't I just use my international driver's license?

W: You could if you were just visiting a lot less than a year. But as a student, you will be temporarily residing in our state.

M: Okay. So that's why my friend can use his international license; he is a tourist.

W: Right.

What is the purpose of this conversation?

A.The man wants to obtain an international driver's license that he can use both in the U. S. and in his country.

B.The man wants to take a driver's test to get an Arizona driver's license.

C.The man wants to know whether he can use his international driver's license in Arizona.

D.The man wants to fill out an application for ma Arizona driver's license.
