听力原文: The Unite Nations (UN) is the largest organization on the earth because it involves most of the countries in the world. The UN has the most important goal in the world z peace. Although all people and countries want peace, it is often forgotten because of anger, power, and many other complex human emotions. Because peace is not as strong as war, because peace is not as loud as war, because peace is not as active as war, it is often lost in the fast pace of life. After the two major world wars of the last century, the people of the world formed the UN in order to work cooperatively toward peace and better lives for all.

The UN has not been as successful toward this goal as many hoped. Yet it is the best organized group working toward peace. With more than 130 members, nearly all the countries in the world, the UN has a good chance of achieving its goals. With more money and more of a commitment from some of the most powerful members, the UN could surely be more effective than it is today. However, disagreements and power struggles among the members have so far prevented the achievement of peace.

(29)

A.Peace.

B.Trade.

C.Health.

D.Wealth.

听力原文: Social insects live in integrated communities which in some ways are similar to human communities. In both types of community there is division of labor. In insect societies, certain insects are responsible for reproduction; the workers collect food While the soldiers defend the colony. In the same way human groups such as farmers and shopkeepers have specialized functions in producing goods and providing services to the community.

Insect and human societies are also alike in that individual members of the community work together. White ant workers coordinate their efforts to build nests. Similarly, in human societies, engineers, architects, town planners and construction workers unite to build cities.

The nests of social insects are as complex as a man-made city. In some insect nests special accommodation is provided for the young and for food storage. Many nests also have devices for regulating the temperature. So insect nests are as functional as human houses.

It is not surprising, therefore, that many analogies have been made between social insects and human societies. It must not be forgotten, however, that insects' social behaviors are determined by innate instinctive mechanisms. Insects show no capacity for learning or for developing a social tradition based on learning.

(33)

A.They both live in communities.

B.They both have soldiers to defend their societies.

C.They both show great capacity for learning.

D.They both have a division of labor.

听力原文:M: Are you enjoying this tour?

W: Yes. It's my first time to visit New York.

M: Mine, too. New York is such a big and fascinating place.

W: Do you know how New York came to be the largest city in the United States?

M: Well, I suppose because it is one of the country's oldest cities. Besides that, it has a good harbor.

W: That's true, but there are other old port cities in the U.S. like Boston, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. In fact, in our early history, the first two played a much larger role than New York.

M: The big difference is that New York had a water route to travel to the interior. Other cities lacked that.

W: Do you mean a river?

M: Not a natural one; it was a canal. The Erie Canal, which was completed in 1823, connected New York's port to the Great Lakes in the Midwest.

W: So even before the railroad was invented, goods and supplies could travel via a water route from New York to the West.

M: Yes, and corn and wheat from that area could travel to New York for sale elsewhere.

W: So New York began to grow faster than the other cities.

M: Yes. In fact, within fifteen years after the canal opened in 1823. New York doubled in size. It became the trading capital of the U.S., attracting business, banking and industry, and providing work for thousands of new immigrants.

(23)

A.How New York became the largest city in the Unite States.

B.How the Eric Canal is built.

C.Why New York has attracted so many people from the world.

D.Their tour in New York.

听力原文: My story began in the years following World War Ⅱ, when men like my father who had served their country returned home to settle down, make a living and raise a family. It was the beginning of the Baby Boom, an optimistic time. The United States had saved the world from fascism, and now our nation was working to unite former adversaries in the aftermath of war, reaching out to allies and to former enemies, securing the peace and helping to rebuild a devastated Europe and Japan. Although the Cold War was beginning with the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, my parents and their generation felt secure and hopeful. American supremacy was the result not just of military might, but of our values and of the abundant opportunities available to people like my parents who worked hard and took responsibility. Middle-class America was flush with emerging prosperity and all that comes with it—new houses, fine schools, neighborhood parks and safe communities. Yet our nation also had unfinished business in the post-war era, particularly regarding race. And it was the World War Ⅱ generation and their children who woke up the challenges of social injustice and inequality and to the ideal of extending America's promise to all of its citizens. My parents were typical of a generation who believed in the endless possibilities of America and whose values were rooted in the experience of living through the Great Depression.

My father served in World War II.

A.正确

B.错误

听力原文: During last fall's unofficial pause on politics, Vice President Dick Cheney fill
ed in for Bush at a fund-raiser for the Republican Governors Association. Neither stumped for losing GOP state candidates in the off-year elections in Viginia and New Jersey. That changed with the New Year. The poblic is now ready for politics to resume in full, said Republican strategist Rich Galen. Cooperetion of the two parties is what Americans want out of their President in a war setting. But with elections happening, Americans fully expect the President to fulfill his party obligations. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle declared open season when he gave an address last week blaming Bush's tax cuts for looming budget deficits. The President's disproof, in which he urged Decmocrats to unite be- hind him on the economy as they have on the war, made clear he will try to put to political use his record post Sep. 11 popularity as commander in chief. It's a tricky balancing act, said independent pollster Andrew Kohut. "I don't think voters are going to say his supporter campaigning is inappropriate, unless he uses his success as commander in chief to try to puch his political agenda. Then, he could suffer a criticism" Kohut said. Before Wednesday, Bush tended to politics more quietly. After a town meeting in Orlando on Dec. 4, he met privately with his brother's political supporter. Reporters were similarly kept away when Bush greeted New Hampshire campaign contributors and volunteers dm4ng his visit to that state on Tuesday. Jouralists were allowed to cover Wednesday's reception for Jab Bush, but dinner was off limits.

Americans fully expect the president to ______.

A.keep his promise.

B.fulfill his party obligations.

C.declare a war on terrorism.

D.retreat the army from Asia.

听力原文: One of the most popular literary figures in American literature is a woman who s
pent almost half. of her long life in China, a country on a continent thousands of miles from the Unite States. In her lifetime she earned this country's most highly acclaimed literary award, the Pulitzer Prize, and also the most prestigious form. of literary recognition in the world, the Nobel Prize for Literature. Pearl S. Buck was almost a household word throughout much of her lifetime because of her productive literary output, which consisted of some eighty-five published works, including several dozen novels, six collections of short stories, fourteen books for children and more than a dozen works of nonfiction. When she was eighty years old, some twenty-five volumes were awaiting publication.

Many of those books were set in China, the land in which she spent so much of her life. Her books and her life served as a bridge between the cultures of the East and the West. As the product of those two cultures she became, as she described herself, “mentally double-sided”. Her unique background made her into an unusually interesting and versatile human being. As we examine the life of Pearl Buck, we cannot help but be aware that we are in fact meeting three separate people: a wife and mother, an internationally famous writer and a humanitarian and a charitable person. One cannot really get to know Pearl Buck without learning about each of the three. Though honored in her lifetime with the William Dean Howell Medal of the American Academy of Arts and Letters in addition to the Nobel and Pulitzer prizes, Pearl Buck as a total human being, not only a famous author, is a fascinating subject of study.

听力原文: "... We are not about to enter the Information Age, but instead are rather well
into it." Present predictions are that by 1990, about thirty million jobs in the United States, or about thirty percent of the job market, will be computer-related. In 1980, only twenty-one percent of all United States high schools owned one or two computers for student use. A new survey revealed that half of United States secondary schools have fifteen or more computers for student use. And now educational experts, administrators, and even the general public are demanding that all students become "computer literate" By the year 2000 knowledge of computers will be necessary in over eighty percent of all occupations. Soon those people not educated in computer use will be compared to those who are print illiterate today.

What is "computer literacy"? The term itself seems to imply some extent of "knowing" about computers, but knowing what? The current opinion seems to be that this should include a general knowledge of what computers are, plus a little of their history and something of how they operate.

Therefore, it is vital that educators everywhere take a careful look not only at what is being done, but also at what should be done in the field of computer education. Today most adults are capable of utilizing a motor vehicle without the slightest knowledge of how the internal-combustion engine works. We effectively use all types of electrical equipment without being able to tell their histories or to explain how they work.

Business people for years have made good use of typewriters and adding machines, yet few have ever known how to repair them. Why, then, attempt to teach computers by teaching how or why they work? Rather, we first must concentrate on teaching the effective use of the computer as the tool is.

"Knowing how to use a computer is what's going be important. We don't talk about 'automobile literacy'. We just get in our cars and drive them."

In 1990, the number of jobs having nothing to do with computers in the Unite States will be reduced to ______.

A.79 million

B.100 million

C.30 million

D.70 million
