SECTION B PASSAGES

Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: The British Broadcasting Corporation is rejecting more and more candidates applying for jobs, because they suffer from hearing loss. And this is due to a wide use of personal stereo systems, According to officials at the corporation, about three per cent of them fail to win jobs for this reason. The figure indicates that people suffering from hearing defects are more common than a decade ago.

Candidates applying for jobs at the British Broadcasting Corporation have always had hearing tests, but the techniques for such tests were not standardized until five years ago. The 'corporation says officially that there is no proof to link personal stereos with hearing disabilities, but frequent exposure to high level of sounds can diminish a person's understanding of speech. That will rule out his chances of being an engineer taking care of sound quality in recording.

So experts are now calling for manufacturers of personal stereos to provide a warning light. It flashes when the sound is too loud. One British manufacturer accepted this suggestion. And this manufacturer has made a device that switches itself off when the level of sound is too high. This device is of great significance and the situation changes a lot ever since.

What is the possible mason for the candidates fail to get jobs at the BBC?

A.Because they are not qualified engineers.

B.Because they have had little exposure to high level of sounds.

C.Because their stereo systems are poor.

D.Because they suffer from hearing loss.

INTERVIEWS

People applying for jobs normally send in a copy of their CV. This should be used as a basis for questions from the interviewer.

Interviewers find it useful to ask candidates about the way they behaved in difficult situations in the past, for example with an angry customer or colleague. These questions allow applicants to explain how they acted in a real-life situation and, consequently, give clues as to how they would act again in similar situations. Candidates are likely to tell the truth as speaking from memory leaves little time to invent what happened. On the other hand questions which ask candidates to imagine how they would behave in a situation which they have probably never met are of little or no value. This is because they only provide answers about how candidates would hope to behave, and this might not match the actions they would actually take.

In any interview candidates must be treated fairly, with questions asked in the same manner and with no candidate's interview lasting considerably longer than any other's. Candidates should always be given the opportunity to ask questions throughout the interview.

Jan Godley, head of Human Resources at Aspley Supermarkets says: 'A company needs staff not only who have the right qualifications and experience, but also who are happy to fit in with the company's way of doing things. Our managers have to accept the idea that everyone working here is a colleague (managers are always known by their first names), and that spending time actually in the store with colleagues and customers, rather than in their offices, is part of the job. For management posts, we organise pre-interview group exercises to measure team-working and leadership skills, sometimes along with activities to assess personal qualities.

In all our interviews we pay attention to body language. It is natural for candidates to show signs of being nervous at an interview but most relax after a few minutes and become more confident. However, if the nervousness continues until the end of the interview, especially when difficult questions are asked, we would begin to have doubts about that candidate. Like all employers, we want to take on staff who are at ease with colleagues and customers so it is important to watch the way candidates behave, as well as listen to what they have to say.'

According to the article, why are questions about a candidate's past behaviour useful?

A.They prove the candidate will act appropriately in different circumstances.

B.They show the candidate can remember details of the situation.

C.They demonstrate how the candidate might act in the future.

“公务员热”降温

题目要求:

Every year millions of candidates attend the National Civil Servant Exam, some of whom even take it as their lifelong career to attend the exam every year in the hope of passing the exam and becoming a civil servant. The most sought-after position may attract nearly 10,000 applicants. The “craze for the Civil Servant Exam” has been fiercely debated in recent years. Should university graduates zealously pursue government posts? Read carefully the opinions from both sides and write your response in about 200 words, in which you should first summarize briefly the opinions from both sides and give your views on the issue.

Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.

YES

It is undeniable that the post of civil servant is an appealing job, for government posts are relatively stable, with fine income and welfare. If one becomes a civil servant, many troublesome problems, such as accommodation and medical care can be solved with some favorable policies. Also, the workload is modest compared with other jobs. So being a civil servant is attractive for many university students and they can hardly abandon this opportunity.

The expansion of college enrollment and the fierce competition among university graduates have led to the increasing pressure of job hunting. For many students who are not quite certain of what they want to do in the future, taking the Civil Servant Exam is a good try. The whole process is the same as applying for jobs in private sections. Through the exam, university graduates can get a practice for the future career, and the result sometimes is not so important.

NO

The craze of university students attending the Civil Servant Exam is, to a large extent, due to the advantages of government posts. But actually, the government post today is not as favorable as it used to be. Being a civil servant is stable, but on the other hand, also lacks creativity and freshness. Its salary is on the average level, and is no match for that in some private sections. University graduates, at their 20s, should exert themselves and strive for a bright future. Blindly following the crowd to pursue government posts is not a good choice.

It is wrong that some university students equate success with a government post. In order to get a government post, students sometimes have to choose jobs that are not even related to their majors. It is a waste and is not worth getting such a post at the cost of one’s specialties and professional knowledge.
