I was nervous—desperately nervous—about becoming car-free. But eight months ago our car wa
s hit, and the damage was so bad it had to be given up. And that s when I had an idea. Why not just give up having a car at all? The more I thought about it, the more sensible it seemed. We have a railway station behind our house, a tube station 10 minutes walk away, and a bus stop at the end of the street. If any family in Britain could live without a car, I reasoned, then surely we were that family? But my new car-free plan wasn t shared by my family. My teenage daughters were shocked. How would they get to and from university? (A bus, I suggested.)What would their friends think about our family being "too poor to afford a car" ? (I wasn t that bothered what they thought, and I suggested they take the same approach.) My friends, too, were astonished at our plan. Wasn t a car essential, when you had children? What would happen if someone got seriously ill overnight and needed to go to hospital (erm...an ambulance?). People smiled, as though this was another of my mad ideas, before saying they were sure I d soon realise that a car wasn t a luxury, it was a necessity. Eight months on, I wonder whether we 11 ever own a car again. The idea that you "have" to own a car, especially if you live in a city, is all in the mind. I live—and many other people do too—in a community that has never been better served by public transport, and yet car ownership has never been higher. Do I really need a car? The answer, for me, turned out to be no, and Im a lot richer because I dared to ask the question.

The author decided to live a car-free life______.

A.after his car was damaged beyond repair

B.after he was hurt in a terrible car accident

C.because maintaining a car was too costly

D.because the traffic jam was too much for him

听力原文: Alan Tong was the worst driver in town. He had an accident of some kind almost every week. Every day his mother worried that the police would turn up to arrest him. [32] This wasn't a foolish worry because they usually called on the Tong household about once a week to deliver a speeding ticket or to serve him notice to appear in court. [33] Most of his accidents were caused by his carelessness. He drove through red lights. He turned right without signaling. [34] In short, there wasn't a traffic regulation Alan had not broken. But luckily, he had never hurt anyone or even gone to the hospital.

Although Alan wasn't popular with the police, he was very popular with his lawyer, Mr. Tsui, who had earned a lot of money from Alan's cases.

One day Alan was working in the garage spray painting his ear when his mother walked in. "Why are you painting one side of the car red and the other side blue?"

"Because every time I have to go to court for a traffic offense, there are always two witnesses. ' What color was the car? ' the prosecutor always asks, and the two witnesses always give the same answer. [35] Well, in the future, one witness will say it was red and the other will say it was blue. Mr. Tsui will then say to the judge, 'Your honor, the witnesses cannot even agree on the color of the ear involved in the accident. ' And the judge will have to dismiss the case against me. "

听力原文:M: I can't believe you're still driving around in this piece of junk.

W: I can't afford to buy a new car.

M: I'll bet you can't afford not to buy a new car.

W: What do you mean by that?

M: Have you ever kept a record of how much you spend to keep this car running?

W: Well, no. But I'm sure maintenance costs are not as much as a monthly payment would be.

M: Have you thought about your losses in pay from the days you've missed work because this thing won't start?

W: It can't have been that much.

M: There are also the tow truck fees; the taxi and bus fares when you have to resort to taking them, and the amount you spend on fuel for this gas-guzzler of yours.

W: All right. You've proved your point, but have you seen how much new cars cost these days?

M: You don't have to buy a new car.

W: Sure, I could buy a used car, but how could I be certain I wasn't getting a lemon? You know what used-car salespeople are like.

M: Why not get a used company car? You know, companies such as those that rent cars must provide their customers with new ones. The cars are well maintained, and there isn't the wear and tear on them that there is on privately owned ones.

W: I'll bet they're expensive.

M: Not anything like a new one.

W: Well, I'll give this new car idea of yours some thought.

A.In tow truck fees.

B.In taxi fares.

C.In fuel consumption.

D.In monthly payments.
