第1题
The blue of the sea is caused by the scattering of sunlight by tiny particles suspended in
the water. Blue light, being of short wavelength, is scattered more efficiently than light of longer wavelengths. Although waters of the open ocean are commonly some shade of blue, green water is commonly seen near coasts, especially in tropical or subtropical regions. This is caused by yellow pigments being mixed with blue water. Phytoplankton are one source of the yellow pigment. Other microscopic plants may color the water brown or brownish-red. Near the shore, silt or sediment in suspension can give water a brownish hue. Outflow of large rivers can often be observed many miles offshore by the coloration of suspended soil particles.

Marine phytoplankton (Greek for "plant wanderers") are microscopic single-celled plants that include diatoms, dinoflagellates, coccolithophorids, green algae, and blue-green algae, among others. The growth of these organisms, which photosynthesize light, depends on a delicate balance of nutrient enrichment via vertical mixing, which is often limited by the availability of nitrogen and light. Diatoms are one-celled plants with patterned glass coverings. Each glass, or silicon dioxide box, is ornamented with species-specific designs, pits, and perforations making them popular with microscopists and, more recently, electron scanning microscopists.

Green water near coastlines is almost always caused by ______.

A.sand color

B.red pigments in coastal waters

C.blue pigment

D.reflected light and yellow pigment from plant life

One answer to the questions of land shortage was suggested by a committee some years ago.
A city was to be built at sea, housing 30 000 people.

The suggestion was to shape the city like a harbour. The outer wall of the harbour would stand on steel columns resting on the sea-bed. Naturally this could only be where the water was fairly shallow. The people would live in flats in the fifty-metre high outer wall. The flats would all face inwards, and would be made of concrete and glass. The glass would be specially made and coloured to control the heat and strong light from the sun.

The water inside this man-made harbour would be calm. The planners called this water the lake. On it would be floating islands carrying more buildings; a hospital, two theaters, a museum, an art exhibition hall and a church. On one of the islands would be a special plant, to take the salt out of sea water and turn it into fresh water.

People living in the city could move around on small boats driven by electricity , so there would be no air pollution from the burning of petrol. There would be platforms outside the main wall for ships bringing supplies. People could also travel to the mainland by motorboat or water plane.

What was suggested about the construction of a new city at sea?

A.The city was to be designed together with a harbour.

B.The walls around the city would be made of steel and glass.

C.The buildings of the city would rest on a floating island.

D.The people would live in flats made of coloured glass.

听力原文: In the Middle Ages, the Italian city of Venice assumed its role as the glassmaking centre of the western world. The Venetian merchant fleet ruled the Mediterranean waves and helped supply Venice's glass craftsmen with the technical know-how of their counterparts in Syria, and with the artistic influence of Islam. The importance of the glass industry in Venice can be seen in the number of craftsmen at work there(more than 8,000 at one point).

Until the end of the 13th century, most glassmaking in Venice took place in the city itself. However, the frequent fires caused by the furnaces led the city authorities, in 1291, to order the transfer of glassmaking to the island of Murano. The measure also made it easier for the city to keep an eye on what was one of its main assets, ensuring that no glassmaking skills or secrets were exported.

In the second half of the 15th century, the craftsmen of Mnrano started using quartz sand and potash made from sea plants to produce particularly pure crystal. By the end of the 16th century, 3,000 of the island's 7,000 inhabitants were involved in some way in the glassmaking industry.

(30)

A.Its merchant fleet ruled the Mediterranean.

B.The secrets of Syria's glassmaking were known by Venice's craftsmen.

C.Venice's glassmaking industry was artistically influenced by Islam.

D.It had more than 8,000 craftsmen at one point.

Hurricane

(1) A hurricane (飓风) is a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour. Hurricane winds blow in a large spiral (螺旋) around a relative calm center known as the "eye". The "eye" is generally 20 to 30 miles wide, and the storm may extend outward 400 miles. As a hurricane nears land, it can bring heavy rains, high winds, and storm surges (风暴潮) . The storm surges and heavy rains can lead to flooding.

(2) Hurricanes are given a different label, depending on where they occur. If they begin over the North Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, or the Northeast Pacific Ocean, they are called hurricanes. Similar storms that occur in the Northwest Pacific Ocean or west of the International Date Line are called typhoons. Near Australia and in the Indian Ocean, they are referred to as tropical cyclones (龙卷风) .

(3) When a hurricane hits land, it can do great damage through its fierce winds, heavy rains, inland (内陆的) flooding, and huge waves crashing on to the shore. During a hurricane, homes, businesses, and public buildings may be damaged or destroyed; roads and bridges can be washed away. A powerful hurricane can kill more people and destroy more property than any other natural disaster.

Fishermen are at special risk from hurricanes as they may be at sea when a hurricane arrives and not be able to get to a safe harbour if they do not receive adequate warning.

(4) If a hurricane is coming in your area, the most important thing is to stay calm and fred shelter immediately. Go to your safe room. If you do not have one, stay indoors during the hurricane and go to a safer place near the center of your home. Cover yourself with a blanket and be sure to keep away from windows and glass doors, because if the glass breaks it&39;s really dangerous. Do not be fooled if there is a lull (暂停) ; it could be the eye of the storm--winds will pick up again.

B.What damages can a hurricane cause?

C.What should you do during a hurricane?

D.What is a hurricane?

E.What are different names of hurricanes?
