回答下列各题: A Plumper How does the countrys economy compare with those of the EU? Some o
f the concerns surrounding Turkeys application to join the European Union, to be voted on by the EUs Council of Ministers on December 17th, are economic - in particular, the countrys relative poverty. Its GDP per head is less than a third of the average for the 15 pre-2(X)4 members of the EU. But it is not far off that of one of the ten new members which joined on May 1 st 2(X)4 (Latvia), and it is much the same as those of two countries, Bulgaria and Romania, which this week concluded accession talks with the EU that could make them full members on January 1st 2007. B Furthermore, the countrys recent economic progress has been, according to Donald Johnston, the secretary-general of the OECD, stunning. GDP in the second quarter of the year was 13. 4% higher than a year earlier, a rate of growth that no EU country comes close to matching. Turkeys inflation rate has just fallen into single figures for the first time since 1972, and this week the country reached agreement with the IMF on a new three-year, $10 billion economic programme that will, according to the IMFs managing director, Rodrigo Rato, help Turkey reduce inflation toward European levels, and enhance the economys resilience. C Resilience has not historically been the countrys economic strong point. As recently as 2001, GDP fell by over 7%. It fell by more than 5% in 1994 and by just under 5% in 1999. Indeed, throughout the 1990s growth oscillated like an electrocardiogram recording a violent heart attack. This irregularity has been one of the main reasons (along with red tape and corruption) why the country has failed dismally to attract much-needed foreign direct investment. Its stock of such investment (as a percentage of GDP) is lower now than it was in the 1980s, and annual inflows have scarcely ever reached $1 billion (whereas Ireland attracted over $25 billion in 2003, as did Brazil in every year from 1998 to 2000). D One deterrent to foreign investors is due to disappear on January 1st 2005. On that day, Turkey will virtually take away the right of every one of its citizens to call themselves a millionaire. Six noughts will be removed from the face value of the lira; one unit of the local currency will henceforth be worth what 1 m are nowi. e. , about 0. 53 ($ 0.70). Goods will have to be priced at both the new and old lira for the whole of the year, but foreign bankers and investors can begin to look forward to a time in Turkey when they will no longer have to juggle mentally with indeterminate strings of zeros. Turkey’s economy grows faster than any EU member now.

听材料,回答下列各题: There is growing dissatisfaction toward rich people, according to a
new online poll. The poll by the China Youth Daily 26 sina.com has highlighted the apparent 27 over the countrys widening income gap. Nearly 8,000 people filled in online 28 last week, and when asked to use three words to describe the societys rich, the top 29 were "extravagant", "greedy" and "corrupt". About 57 percent of those 30 said that "extravagant" was the best word to describe the rich, followed closely by "greedy". 31 , despite their dissatisfaction, 93 percent of those polled wished they could be rich too, and that richer people should be "socially 32 ". Some 33 percent of respondents also praised rich people for being "smart". Nearly 90 percent of respondents agreed that most people in society, including themselves, 33 speak up for the poor but were 34 to take action and actually do something for them. The survey comes on the heels of a heated debate over comments made by renowned economist Mao Yushi, who said a couple of days ago that he was speaking for the rich and working for the poor. A report released by the Asian Development Bank last Wednesday revealed that Chinas Gini coefficient-an indicator of the wealth divide-rose from 0.407 in 1993 to 0.473 in 2004. An earlier Chinese Academy of Social Sciences report said that the richest 10 percent of Chinese families now own more than 40 percent of all private assets, while the poorest 10 percent in the country share less than 2 percent of the total wealth. The countrys income gap is close to that of Latin America, the report which 35 in January said. 第26题答案为()。

Robots could fill the jobs of 3.5 million people in Japan by 2025, a thinktank says, helpi
ng to avert worker shortages as the countrys population shrinks. Japan faces a 16 percent slide in the size of its workforce by 2030 while the number of elderly will mushroom, the government estimates, raising worries about who will do the work in a country unused to, and unwilling to contemplate large-scale immigration. The thinktank, the Machine Industry Memorial Foundation, says robots could help fill the gaps, ranging from microsized capsules that detect lesions to high-tech vacuum cleaners. Rather than each robot replacing one person, the foundation said in a report that robots could make time for people to focus on more important things-Japan could save 2.1 trillion yen (10.4 billion pounds) of elderly insurance payments in 2025 by using robots that monitor the health of older people, so they dont have to rely on human nursing care, the foundation said in its report. Caregivers would save more than an hour a day if robots helped look after children, older people and did some housework, it added. Robotic duties could include reading books out loud or helping bathe the elderly.

The heads of some of Russias most prestigious educational establishments yesterday admitte
d that students use surrogates (代理人) to gain entry to top institutes, whose qualifications are a passport to lucrative jobs. The surrogate students are only the latest symptom of an epidemic of corruption that has gripped the Russian higher education system. A report published this week by the Ministry of Education and Moscows Higher School of Economics (HSE) showed that more than $ 300m was paid in bribes to enter the countrys educational establishments last year. A direct bribe to lecturers to enter an institution can be up to $ 30 000 for a top law faculty, the HSE estimates. "In our school alone this spring we caught four impostors who were attempting to sit the entrance tests in place of others," said Grigory Kantorovich, deputy head of the HSE. "Those were not isolated cases; its a whole, specialised business. " Such corruption is multiplied by a burgeoning market in coursework and diplomas written by teachers and lecturers, which can be bought over the Internet. A police spokesman said there was no dedicated unit for tackling corruption in education, but individual cases were investigated if evidence was handed over.
