听力原文: How do the birds manage to find their way? There seems to be no single answer: (32)they use many methods. Migrants follow recognized land, fly over familiar sea and arrive at their summer homes.

But all birds cannot use such straightforward methods. An Arctic sea bird, for example, has to fly at least 3,000 kilometers across the Antarctic Ocean with no land to guide it. We know that some birds flying at night, (34) navigate by the star for on cloudy nights they tend to get lost.

Day-flying birds may use the sun. If they are to do so, they must (35) have a precise sense of time. Still others appear to be able to use the earth's magnetic field as a guide. So it seems that many migrating birds must carry in their brains a clock, a compass and the memory of a map.

Task 2

Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41 through 45.

When animals make long journeys across places where there is no food or shelter, such as deserts or oceans, it is very important that they should be able to find their way accurately.

Birds find their way by the stars at night and by the sun during the day. People thought that this was impossible. Then some scientists made an experiment. They put some migrating birds(候鸟)in cages inside a planetarium(天象图). When the operator turned the artificial sky(人造天空)round, the birds began to fly to the sides of the cage. Every time he moved it, the birds moved to a new position. Scientists discovered that they always flew toward the direction in which they would have flown if the sky had been real. This proved that they could see the stars and respond to them.

Many animals, especially birds, have a very precise sense of time, which is called their “internal clock”. In cloudy weather, birds delay setting off on long journeys, but if the cloud lasts for a long time, they must go at last, to complete their migration in time. In such conditions, they are able to steer(引导)by following the magnetic field(磁场)of the earth. We could say that they have their own special compass inside them, which tells the right direction to go.

Most migrating animals travel in groups, sometimes in very large numbers. This makes it more likely that they will find the right way, especially when the group has experienced animals which have made the journey before.

What was proved by the experiment mentioned in the passage?

A.Birds find their way by the stars at night and by the sun during the day.

B.Birds can tell the differences between real sky and artificial sky.

C.Birds can see the stars and would move when the stars change position.

D.Birds always fly to the sides of the cage.

根据以下内容回答题:

Homing pigeons are placed in a training program from about the time they are twenty。Eight days of age. They are taught to enter the lon through a trap and to exercise above and around the loft.and graduaUy they are taken away for short distances in wicker baskets and released. They are then expected to find their way home in the shortest possible time. In their training flights or in actual races, the birds are taken to prearranged distant point sand released to find their way back to their own logs.Once the birds are liberated, their owners, who are standing by at the home lofts, anxiously watch the sky for the return of their entries.Since time is of the essence, the speed with which the birds can be induced to enter the loft trap may make the difference between gaining a win or a second place. The head of a homing pigeon is comparatively small, but its brain is one quarter large than that of the ordinary pigeon. The homing pigeon is very intelligent and will persevere to the point of stubbornness;some have been known to fly a hundred miles off course to avoid a storm. Some homing pigeon experts claim that this bird is gifted with a form. of built-in radar that helps it find its own loft ager hours of flight, for hidden under the head feathers are two very sensitive ears, while the sharp, prominent eyes can see great distances in daytime. Why do homing pigeons fly homeg They are not unique in this inherent skill;it is found in most migratory birds,in bees, ants, toads, and even turtles, which have been known to travel hundreds of miles to return to their homes. But in the animal world, the homing pigeon can be trusted with its freedom and trained to carry out the missions that people demand.

What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To convince the reader to buy a homing pigeon.

B.To inform. the reader about homing pigeons and their training

C.To protect homing pigeons against the threat of extinction(绝迹).

D.To encourage the owners of homing pigeons to set the birds free.

听力原文: Not only farmers but also scientists have studied weather forecasting. People for many centuries and in all countries have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecast. Sometimes distant objects such as hills and tall trees seem to be very clear and near. This is a sign of much water in the air, and therefore rain will probably come. When distant sounds, such as noise from a train, birds singing, people shouting, are very clearly heard, then wet and stormy weather is on the way. (30)Some birds, particularly swallows, fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly very near the ground if rainy weather or a storm is on the way. This is because probably the insects, which they are hunting, then fly low. (31)If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will clear up and become fine. Such rainbows always come in the evening. If the stars twinkle-clearly at night, then fair weather will continue. If a mist appears in the early morning, just about sunrise, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in color, then the following day will be fine. When big clouds disappear at sunset, then the weather will follow on the next day. (32)If a rainbow appears in the morning, then rainy weather will probably come. Most of the above sayings have been made up by people who have used their eyes and their brains to forecast the weather.

(30)

A.Because both farmers and scientists try to make weather forecast.

B.Because people in all countries make weather forecast.

C.Because it is easy to make weather forecast.

D.Because he wants to make it clear how important to make weather forecast.
