听力原文:John: If I understand you correctly, Mr. David, you were driving well within the speed limit when you were stopped by the Police.

David: Yes. I always keep to the limit in Downside Road because there's a school slap on the comer of the first turning and I wouldn't want to run the risk of hitting one of the kids, right?

John: But Mr. David, the Police stopped you at 11 p.m. You're surely not suggesting that children of any age would be likely to be leaving school at such a 'late hour. I cannot find that your assertion provides any conclusive proof that you were driving within the limit.

David: Proof?. Well, it's not exactly proof I grant you, but it sort of backs me up, if you know what I mean.

John: I'm afraid I do not know what you mean.

David: Well, I go by the speedometer, don't I? That's what a speedometer's for, isn't it? It tells you how fast you're going. I mean a machine can't lie, can it?

John: "Machines" as you call them are not necessary infallible guides, Mr. David. They sometimes go wrong. In any case according to the Police testimony you were driving at more than sixty miles an hour in such a manner as to cause a danger to the public. David: Very funny, sir. Still, the steering wheel has been playing up a bit lately, I'll admit that. I 'said to thc wife only the other day I'd better have it checked, but she said put it off till we went on holiday, so...

John: Quite so, Mr. David. Now, I understand that when the Police stopped you, you refused to take a breathalyzer test. Why was that?

David: Well, I hadn't been drinking, had I? Half a lager and lime at The Feathers--you must be joking.

John: It is not my habit to make jokes in court, Mr. David, and the report I have here shows that subsequent tests indicated that you had taken considerably more than a lager and lime.

David: You don't want to take any notice of that, sir. They're just trying to put it over on me -- me and all the others they stop when they've nothing better to do. If you ask me the Police ought to be protecting innocent people from vandals and muggers, instead of picking on innocent drivers...

John: Kindly lower your voice, Mr. David. This is a court of law not a theatrical presentation. Now, if you would care to listen to this report, I will read it out to you...

B.He has been caught running over a child

C.He has been found using a defective speedometer

听力原文: The Internet computer system is helping many people start and operate businesses. But to use the Internet, a person has to learn how to use a computer. A person also needs a telephone line or satellite connection. However, about half the world's population has never even made a telephone call. And most poor people do not own a computer. For these people a "digital divide" exists.

Two meetings were held in the United States to discuss what can be done. One was called the "Digital Dividends Conference." It was held in Seattle, Washington. Officials from large American information technology companies attended. Representatives from non-governmental organizations also attended.

These people are working to make it easier for poor people to use the Internet. The head of Microsoft, Bill Gates, spoke at the meeting. Mr. Gates has given hundreds of millions of dollars to help people in developing countries fight diseases like malaria and AIDS. He said that people have to be healthy before they can use computers and the Internet.

Another conference was held at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was called "Voices of the Poor." It was supported by the British Department for International Development. About 100 people from different organizations attended. They learned that many organizations around the world are using computers and the Internet to help reduce the dig ital divide.

(26)

A.The widening gap between the haves and have-nots, in terms of high tech equipment and knowledge.

B.The sharp distinction between computer experts and computer illiterates.

C.The gulf between the very rich and the very poor.

D.The barrier that keeps the poor people from learning how to use a computer.
