听力原文: Modern Chinese use the solar calendar as English people do. But at the same time, they use their own lunar calendar. Each lunar year is given the name of one of these animals: the rat, the ox, the tiger, the hare, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the goat, the monkey, the chicken, the dog and the pig. This list lasts for twelve years and then starts again.
Each Chinese month starts on the day of the new moon, and the full moon comes on the fifteenth day of the month. The New Year always starts between January the twenty-first and February the twentieth.
On the last day of the lunar year, there is a big family dinner. All members of the family(except married daughters) try to be present at this meal, even if they have to travel many miles to reach the home of their parents. Old quarrels are forgotten, and everybody is happy. After the dinner, the children keep awake to welcome the New Year.
The New Year celebrations last for 15 days, from the new moon to the full moon. On the first day, children and unmarried people go to visit their elders.

Pidgin English, though sometimes regarded as" baby talk", is a useful language spoken in a large part of Pacific islands. About 30 to 50 million people speak some form. of it.
Pidgin English we know today was born on the Chinese coast 300 years ago when the Western nations first began to trade there. The Western merchants and the Chinese communicated with each other by using Westerner's words and Chinese sentence patterns. The result became known as "business" language, or because the closest Chinese could come to pronounce business as "bishin" or later "bijin"--at last "pidgin". It has nothing to do with a pigeon though it's sometimes spelt that way.

Bomb Explosions in Thailand
The new year celebration in Thailand was shattered by violence, when nine bombs exploded across Bangkok around midnight. Three Thai citizens were killed and more than 30 injured.
Among the injured, six were foreigners. No Chinese casualties were reported, the Chinese Embassy in Bangkok, the capital, said on Monday. __________ (46) But other embassies have advised their citizens to avoid traveling to Bangkok. Bombings and shootings occur almost daily in Thailand&39;s three southernmost provinces. Yala,Naarathiwat and Pattani have a dominant Muslim population and have long complained of neglect(忽视) and discrimination (歧视) in the largely Buddhist (佛教徒的 ) nation. They have asked for independence and a separate state. Since 2004, the insurgents (叛乱者) have carried out numerous attacks in the south and more than 1,900 people have been killed. __________ (48)
But Thai Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said on Monday that domestic politics rather than the Muslim insurgency was behind the bombings. "It is likely related to people who lost their political benefits," Surayud said, referring to Thaksin Shinawatra.__________ (49) Surayud was later appointed interim (临时的) prime minister. Thaksin, however, still enjoys widespread support, especially in the countryside.
__________ (50) Thaksin&39;s lawyer, Noppadol Patama, denied his client&39;s involvement in the bombings, according to a local website.

But, as has been true in many other cases, when they were at last married, the most ideal of situations was found to have been changed to the most practical. Instead of having shared their original duties, and as school-boys would say, going halves, they discovered that the cares of life had been doubled. This led to some distressing moments for both our friends; they understood suddenly that instead of dwelling in heaven they were still upon earth, and had made themselves slaves to new laws and limitations. Instead of being freer and happier than ever before, they had assumed new responsibilities; they had established a new household, and must fulfill in some way or another the obligations of it. They looked back with affection to their engagement; they had been longing to have each other to themselves, apart from the world, but it seemed they never felt so keenly that they were still units in modern society.
