听力原文:M: Hi, Judy, you look happy.

W: Yes, I just saw a very funny film on TV.

M: What was it about.'?

W: It was about a careless man who got into trouble wherever he went. He couldn't do anything well.

M: So you liked it?

W: Yes, I did. It made me laugh a lot.

M: But I would rather see something not only interesting but also instructive.

W: Oh, Mike, don't be so serious. People sometimes need relaxation.

M: That's true. But I think that watching TV is not just for entertainment.

What are these two people talking about?

听力原文:W: You know, I've often wondered why people laugh at the picture of a big belly b
usinessman slipping on a banana skin and falling on his bottom. We are to feel sorry for him.

M: Actually, Laura, I think we laugh because we are glad it didn't happen to us. But of course there is also a kind of humorous satisfaction in seeing somebody self-important making a fool of themselves.

W: Yes, and then there are a lot of jokes about people who are too fat or physically handicapped, you know, deaf, or short-sighted, things like that. After all, it's not really funny to be like that.

M: Oh, I think that's because we're embarrassed. We don't know how to cope with the situation. Perhaps we are even a bit frightened we might get like that, so we laugh. What about the custard pie routine?

W: What do you mean "custard pie routine"?

M: You know, all those old films where someone gets so outraged with his boss, he picks up a custard pie and plasters it all over the other person's face.

W: That never makes me laugh very much, because you can guess it's going to happen. But a lot of people still find it laughable. It must be because it's the sort of the thing we'd all love to do once in a while and never quite have the courage to.

M: I had an old aunt who used to throw cups of tea at people when she was particularly irritated. She said it relieved her feelings.

W: It must have come a bit expensive.

M: Not really. She took care never to throw her best china.

Questions:

19. Why does the man say we laugh when we see some self-important people making fools of themselves?

20. Why do some people joke about those who are fat or handicapped according to the man?

21. Why do many people find it funny to see someone throwing a custard pie on their boss's face?

22. Why did the man's aunt say she would drop cups of tea at people occasionally?

(23)

A.We simply cannot help reacting instinctively that way.

B.We wish to hide our indifference to their misfortune.

C.We derive some humorous satisfaction from their misfortune.

D.We think it serves them right for being mean to other people.

SECTION B PASSAGES

Directions: In this section, you will hear several passages. Listen to the passages carefully and then answer the questions that follow.

听力原文: The question of whether dogs have a sense of humor is often fiercely argued. My own opinion is that some have and some haven't. Dachshunds have, but not St Bernards or Great Danes. Apparently a dog has to be small to be fond of joke. You never find a Great Dane trying to be a comedian.

But it is fatal to let any dog know that he is funny, for he immediately loses his head and starts overdoing it. As an example of this I would point to Rudolph, a Dachshund I once owned, whose slogan was "Anything for a Laugh". Dachshunds are always the worst offenders in this respect because of peculiar shape. It is only natural that when a dog finds that his mere appearance makes the viewing public laugh, he should imagine that Nature intended him to be a comedian.

Sometimes Rudolph overplays his sense of humor, a typical example of which is he once stole ducks from a farm nearby and brought complaints on me. It is true that Dachshunds and other dogs have their faults, but they seem unimportant compared with their virtues.

According to the narrator, which kind of dogs is thought to have a sense of humor?

A.St Bernards.

B.Great Danes.

C.Dachshunds.

D.Shepherd dogs.

听力原文: Are you afraid to raise your hand in class, even when you know the answer? If you are, most people would say that you're shy.

If you feel shy, you're not alone. Nine out of ten people are at least a little shy. But however shy you are, evidence seems to show that it isn't your fault. You may have been born that way.

How do psychologists measure shyness? One way is by observation. They keep detailed records of people's actions—like how often these people speak to others, or how long it takes someone to say hello to a stranger.

Another way to measure shyness is to ask people questions. The test only takes about 10 minutes. It asks questions like "Do you like going out a lot?" and "Do you have many friends?" people must answer either yes or no. These questions can predict how people actually behave in social situations.

Suppose the test tells you that someone is sky. Chances are good that that person will act shy.

When Scientists measure shyness ,they're ally comparing degrees of shyness. In other words, when researchers say people are shy, they really mean they are more shy than others.

(29)

A.Because many people don't know how to behave in social situations.

B.Because most people are shy by nature.

C.Nobody will laugh at you for being shy.

D.Shyness is difficult to overcome.

听力原文: There was a gardener who looked after his garden with great care. To water hi
s flowers, he used two buckets. One was a shiny and new bucket. The other was a very old and worn-out one, which had seen many years of service, but was now past its best. Every morning, the gardener would fill up the two buckets. Then he would carry them along the path, one on each side, to the flowerbeds. The new bucket was very proud of itself. It could carry a full bucket of water without a single drop spilled. The old bucket felt very ashamed because of its holes: before it reached the flowerbeds, much water had leaked along the path. Sometimes the new bucket would say, "See how capable I am! How good it is that the gardener has me to water the flowers every day! I dont know why he still bothers with you. What a waste of space you are!" And all that the old bucket could say was, "I know I am not very useful, but I can only do my best. I am happy that the gardener still finds a little bit of use in me, at least." One day, the gardener heard that kind of conversation. After watering the flowers as usual, he said, "You both have done your work very well. Now I am going to carry you back. I want you to look carefully along the path." Then the two buckets did so. All along the path, they noticed, on the side where the new bucket was carried, there was just bare earth; on the other side where the old bucket was carried, there was a joyous row of wild flowers, leading all the way to the garden. Questions 19 to 21 are based on the passage you have just heard. 19. What was the old bucket ashamed of? 20. What was the new buckets main purpose of making conversations with the old one? 21. Why was the old bucket still kept by the gardener?20.

A.To laugh at the old one.

B.To take pity on the old one.

C.To show off its beautiful looks.

D.To praise the gardener"s kindness.

I made a pledge to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I w
ould try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or huts.

The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting a Biblical(圣经的) passage about husbands being thoughtful of their wives. Then he went on to say, "Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love." To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.

And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, "That new yellow sweater looks great on yon."

"Oh, Tom, you noticed," she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled.

After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, hut then I thought, "Evelyn's been alone here with the kids all week and now she wants to be alone with me." We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites.

So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relied and happy, that's how the whole vacation passed. I made a new pledge to keep on remembering to choose love.

There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.

"What's the matter?" I asked her.

"Tom," she said in a voice filled with distress, "do you know something I don't?"

"What de you mean?"

"Well… that checkup(体检) I had several weeks ago.., our doctor...did he tell you something about me? Tom, you've been so good to me... am I dying?"

It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I burst out laughing.

"No, honey," I said, wrapping her in my arms. "You're not dying; I'm just starting to live."

In the first paragraph, "No ifs, ands or buts" probably means "______."

A.unintentionally

B.inevitably

C.impressively

D.unconditionally

Every single thing you are not satisfied with in your life is a result of a bad habit. If
you dont have enough money, its because bad habits kept you from taking action. If you are not as fit as you would like to be, its because of bad habits that kept you glued to the couch. Would you like to change that? The only thing that separates successes from failures is successful habits. But developing good habits is easier said than done. We find it hard to build good habits because we spend every day floating down the river of life with no oars(桨). So what should we do? Henry Ford said it best, " Whether you think you can, or you think you cant, youre right." Belief is the root of change. The strongest force in human behavior. is the need to act in line with our self-identity or our belief of who we are. To change a habit, you must believe that you can actually do it. Often our habits are so conditioned into our being that we move through those patterns without any thought or consciousness as to what we are doing. Interrupting the old patterns creates a space for new ones. A few ways to interrupt your pattern are to shock yourself or say something funny that makes you laugh or interrupt it through some physical action. One woman put a can of dog food next to her fridge to interrupt her pattern every time she reached out for some junk food. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. The goal is to get you out of a preprogrammed way of being by engaging in a behavior. that shocks you, so as to change your state and help you move into another pattern.

The author tells us in Para. 1 that bad habits______.

A.result from poor living conditions

B.are difficult to get rid of

C.result in your dissatisfaction in life

D.push you to take unnecessary actions

第11题
For several days I saw little of Mr. Rochester. In the morning he seemed much occupied wit
h business, and in the afternoon gentlemen from the neighbourhood called and sometimes stayed to dine with him. When his foot was well enough, he rode out a great deal.

During this time, all my knowledge of him was limited to occasional meetings about the house, when he would sometimes pass me coldly, and sometimes bow and smile. His changes of manner did not offend me, because I saw that I had nothing to do with the cause of them.

One evening, several days later, I was invited to talk to Mr. Rochester after dinner. He was sitting in his armchair, and looked not quite so severe, and much less gloomy. There was a smile on his lips, and his eyes were bright, probably with wine. As I was looking at him, he suddenly turned, and asked me, "do you think I'm handsome, Miss Eyre?"

The answer somehow slipped from my tongue before I realized it: "No, sir. "

"Ah, you really are unusual! You are a quiet, serious little person, but you can be almost rude. "

"Sir, I'm sorry. I should have said that beauty doesn't matter, or something like that."

"No, you shouldn't! I see, you criticize my appearance, and then you stab me in the back! You have honesty and feeling. There are not many girls like you. But perhaps I go too fast. Perhaps you have awful faults to counterbalance your few good points.

I thought to myself that he might have too. He seemed to read my mind, and said quickly, ""Yes, you're right. I have plenty of faults. I went the wrong way when I was twenty-one, and have never found the right path again. I might have been very different. I might have been as good as you, and perhaps wiser. I am not a bad man, take my word for it, but I have done wrong. It wasn't my character, but circumstances which were to blame. Why do I tell you all this? Because you're the sort of person people tell their problems and secrets to, because you're sympathetic and give them hope. "

It seemed he had quite a lot to talk to me. He didn't seem to like to finish the talk quickly, as was the case for the first time.

"Don't be afraid of me, Miss Eyre. " He continued. "You don't relax or laugh very much, perhaps because of the effect Lowood School has had on you. But in time you will be more natural with me, and laugh, and speak freely. You're like a bird in a cage. When you get out of the cage, you'll fly very high. Good night. "

At the beginning Miss Eyre's impressions of Mr. Rochester were all EXCEPT ______.

A.busy

B.sociable

C.friendly

D.changeable
