听力原文： The young executive weaving through the traffic in his BMW, one hand on the steering wheel, the other holding a telephone, has become a familiar sight on our city streets. It doesn't look safe and it isn't. It is not just that the serous discussion he is having is distracting. There is also the tangled cable by the gear lever and the fact that he's only got one hand free if someone suddenly steps off the kerb.
Car phone have been available in Britain since 1959 but have only become common since January 1985 when two "cellular" systems were introduced. These are licensed by the government and take advantage of new technology and ultra-high radio frequencies. About 2500 subscribers were expected in the first years of operation but the actual figure for 1985 was more than double that. It is estimated that 75000 cellular phones were then in use, and there were well over 100000 by the end of 1986.
The Highway Code has been rewritten to include a warning that driver should not use hand-held telephone when the car is moving, because the drivers may concentrate more on the phone-work than the road ahead. Authority warns that those who drive and talk into a telephone will be prosecuted.

Weaving with Light
In the Sierra Madre mountain range of west central Mexico, the native Huichol people live much the way their ancestors did--without electricity. That&39;s because it&39;s too expensive to string power lines to the remote mountain areas where they live. To help support themselves, the Huichol create beautiful artwork. They sell their art in cities hundreds of miles away from their villages.＜br＞
And without electricity--at home or on the road, they can only work during daylight hours. When it gets dark, they must stop whatever they&39;re doing.＜br＞
Now, a team of scientists, designers, and architects is using new technologies to provide the Huichol with light after the sun sets. The scientists&39; technique involves weaving tiny electronic crystals into fabrics that can be made into clothes, bags, or other items.＜br＞
By collecting the sun&39;s energy during the day, these lightweight fabrics provide bright white light at night. Their inventors have named the fabrics "Portable (轻便的) Lights". Portable Lights have the potential to transform. the lives of people without electricity around the world.＜br＞
At the core of Portable Lights technology are devices called high-brightness light-emitting diodes (高亮度法光二极管), or HB LEDs. These tiny lights appear in digital clocks, televisions,and streetlights.＜br＞
LEDs are completely different from the light bulbs(灯泡). Most of those glass bulbs belong to a type called incandescent lights (白炽灯). Inside, electricity heats a metal coil (线圈) to about2,200 degrees Celsius. At that temperature, bulbs give off light we can see. Ninety percent of energy produced by incandescent lights, however, is heat--and invisible. With all that wasted energy, bulbs burn out quickly. They are also easily broken.＜br＞
LEDs, on the other hand, are like tiny pieces of rock made up of molecules (分子) that are arranged in a crystal structure. When an electric current passes through a LED, the crystal structure produces light. Unlike incandescent bulbs, they can produce light of various colors. Within a LED,the type of molecules and their particular arrangement determine what color is produced.

听力原文： If you seize the stem of a nettle (荨麻) firmly, perhaps with the idea of uprooting a weed that is growing where it should not, you will probably feel a sharp sting in your palm or through the thicker part of your fingers. The stinging hairs on a nettle's stem are small but effective. It is not unusual to feel the sting for several hours after you touch the nettle. Long ago, when people made such lore part of their general knowledge, it was believed that you might rub the root of the nettle on the injury and the sting would disappear.
The slender nettle, Urtica gracilis, is a wayside plant growing in moist soil over a wide area. It is more sparingly decorated with stinging hairs than the stinging nettle, U. dioica. Once full grown, the slender nettle may be quite safe to handle. The pliable young stems are more likely to be protected with stinging hairs than the stems of older plants.
The American Indians found the nettle a useful plant. The fiber of the nettle is strong, and when spun together in several strands, it could be used to make twine for hobbling horses or weaving cloth.
