Twenty-six years ago, Muhammad Yunus, a Bangladeshi economics teacher, was visiting a vill
age when he met a woman who made bamboo baskets. She couldnt afford to buy the bamboo to make the baskets, so she had to borrow the money from the bamboo sellers and then pay them a large part of the profit from each one she sold. There was so little money left for her to keep that she couldnt afford to buy more bamboo, so she had to borrow more money. And so the cycle continued with no way out for her. She couldnt borrow money from friends or family because they were as poor as she was. She couldnt borrow from the bank because she had no land to guarantee that she would pay back the loan. Yunus went around the village and found 41 people who were in the same position—trapped in a cycle of poverty with no escape. When he added up the amount of money that they needed to break free from the cycle, it came out to just twenty seven dollars. As Yunus says, — I felt ashamed of myself for being part of a society which could not provide even 27 dollars for 41 hard-working, skilled human beings. He lent them the money and told them to pay it back whenever they could. He got all of it back, so he went to other villages and did the same thing. He always got his money back. The official banks didnt want to get involved in what he was doing, so Yunus started his own bank. The Grameen bank was born, and with it there is a new approach to lending money-micro-credit. The bank now lends over a billion dollars to more than two million borrowers, 96% of them women, and involving more than half of the villages in Bangladesh. The repayment is 99%. The rural economy of the country has improved gready since the bank started. And the success has spread. This year it was estimated that there are now over 7 ,000 micro-credit organizations in the world, lending to over 16 million of the poorest people.

The women couldnt find a way out of the cycle of poverty because______.

A.she was not hardworking enough

B.she couldn"t borrow enough money

C.she was exploited by the bamboo seller too much

D.the profit of selling the baskets was little

听力原文: Adrians "Amazing Race" started early when his parents realised that he, as a
baby, couldnt hear a thing, not even loud noises. In a special school for the hearing-impaired, he learned sign language and got to mix with other disabled children. However, the sight of all the disabled children communicating with one another upset his mother. She wanted him to lead a normal life. So after speaking to an advisor, she sent him to private classes where he learned to read lips and pronounce words. Later on, Adrians parents decided to send him to a regular school. But the headmaster tried to prevent them from doing so, saying regular schools couldnt take care of a special need student. His parents were determined to take the risk and pushed him hard to go through his work every day because they wanted to prove that, given the opportunity, he could do anything. Adrian made the grade and got accepted. It was a big challenge. The pace was faster so he had to sit at the front of the class and really pay attention to the teacher, which wasnt always easy. But he stuck to it and did a lot of extra work after school. The efforts made by Adrian and his parents paid off. Adrian graduated with good grades and got into a top high school. He also achieved a lot in life outside school. He developed a love for the outdoors and went to Nepal to climb mountains. He even entered the World Yacht Race 05/06 — being the first hearing-impaired Asian to do so. But none of these achievements would have been possible without one of the most important lessons from his mother. "If you believe in yourself and work hard, you can achieve great results," she often said. Questions 16 to 19 are based on the passage you have just heard. 16. How did Adrian communicate with other children in the special school? 17. Why did Adrians parents decide to send him to a regular school? 18. How did Adrian finally succeed in his study? 19. Why is Adrians life described as an "Amazing Race"?16.

A.They wanted him to live a normal life.

B.They wanted to prove the headmaster wrong.

C.He wouldn"t mix with other disabled children.

D.He wasn"t taken good care of in the special school.

听力原文: When you live in an apartment building, where only wall separates you from yo
ur neighbors, everyone needs to be considerate of each other. Thats not what happened in my apartment building. Someone was always leaving the clothes in the washers and dryers in the laundry room. I got tired of running up and down the stairs to see if the clothes had been removed, so I could start my own one. Obviously someone else got tired, too. Because one day, someone took clothes from the washer and dryer, and dumped them in the corner. This act started a battle of letters posted on the wall of the laundry room. The first letter was from Mindy Lance who was really angry that her clothes had been removed from the washer and dryer, and dumped. She then threatened to dump everybody elses clothes she herself found in the washer and dryer. Mindy Lances letter enraged other residents and they posted the letters to her. Eventually, Mindy began to behave properly but hard feelings remained. The problem couldnt have been resolved better. If residents had informed the building manager, she then could inform. all residents that the clothes should be removed from the washers and dryers within 50 minutes after their wash is done. Those who refuse to obey might not have their leases renew. That could be a fare consent solution. Neighbor problems may sometimes seem inevitable, but its important to resolve them fairly. 20. What does the speaker think residents in an apartment building need to be? 21. What started a battle of letters in the laundry room? 22. What does the speaker think might be a better way to resolve the problem?21.

A.Someone dumped the clothes left in the washer and dryer.

B.Someone broke the washer and dryer by overloading them.

C.Mindy Lance"s laundry blocked the way to the laundry room.

D.Mindy Lance threatened to take revenge On her neighbors.
