听力原文: Marriage has been an important part of people’s life from the early times. Most American marriages nowadays, especially first marriages involving young couples, are the result of mutual affection.

Parents hardly ever select spouses for their children, but they can usually influence their choices by voicing dis-approval of someone they consider unsuitable. Parents do not arrange marriages for their children but they are willing to offer some financial aid to the new couples.

The average age of marriage in the U. S.A. is 23 for man and 21 for woman. The legal marriage age is 18 for both male and female.

There are about 2,500,000 couples reporting marriages in the U. S. A. every year. The marriage rate in 1994 was 10.5 per 1,000 people. Of 2,487,000 marriages in 1994, about 1,155,000 were unsuccessful. The divorce rate in the U. S. is so high that it produces a large number of one-arent families and causes serious social problems.

听力原文: Clark Warren has been a marriage counselor for 35 years -- long enough to help couples confront just about every domestic difficulty imaginable. On the personal side, he's helped six close friends as they went through three divorces each. His own marriage, happily, has lasted 43 years -- and he and his wife, Marylyn, have raised three daughters who also enjoy happiness of marriage.

So this is enough to say that Dr. Warren knows a fair bit about marriage -- from his practice, his friends, his own experience, and from his parents, who still liked to hold hands after 70 years together. And he thinks he knows what it is that makes or breaks a marriage.

The key, he says, is not necessarily family background, or chemistry, or even how old people are when they marry. It is... are you ready? That is choosing wisely in the first place. "This choice has more to do with the eventual success of your marriage than everything else combined that you do after you get married," says this voice of experience. "If you choose someone who is highly compatible, it feels almost effortless; if you are mismatched, it's all hard work and good intentions."

What is Clark Warren?

A.A domestic scientist.

B.A marriage counselor.

C.A happy bachelor.

D.A medical advisor.

听力原文: A good marriage means growing as a couple but also growing as individuals. This isn't easy; marriage has always been difficult. Why then are we seeing so many divorces at this time? Yes, our modern social fabric is thin, and yes, the permissiveness of society has created unrealistic expectations and threw the family into disorder. But divorce is so common because people today are unwilling to exercise the self-discipline that marriage requires. They expect easy joy, like the entertainment on TV, the thrill of a good party.

Marriage takes some kind of sacrifice, not dreadful self-sacrifice of the soul, but some level of compromise. Some of one's fantasies, some of one's legitimate desires, have to be given up for the value of the marriage itself. "While all marital partners feel shacked at times, it is they who really choose to make the martial ties into confining chains or supporting bonds, says Dr. Walter. Marriage requires sexual, financial and emotional discipline. A man and a woman cannot follow every impulse, cannot allow them to stop growing or changing.

(30)

A.Because it is difficult to maintain a marriage.

B.Because people like watching TV programs.

C.Because people prefer freedom to self-discipline.

D.Because our society is permissive towards divorces.

听力原文: In order to marry in Britain, both the man and the woman must be over sixteen. Anyone under eighteen must obtain parental consent. People can get married either in a registry office or m a church. On three Sundays before the wedding a public announcement of the forthcoming marriage has to be made in church, and announcement has to be put up on a board at the church or the registry office.

In a registry office ceremony there must be two witnesses. On some occasions, especially when people have married secretly, two passers-by in the street have suddenly found themselves asked to witness a marriage! Although the number of registry office marriages is increasing, most people still prefer a church wedding. The bride, in white, is attended by bridesmaids, and led by a proud father up to the church altar, where the bridegroom is waiting, nervously, attended by his best man.

And it seems sensible to wait. One quarter of all marriages between people under twenty-one end in divorce. In Britain in 1972, there were 124,248 divorces, "Look before you leap"(三思而行) would be good advice to people thinking of getting married.

(30)

A.Under 18.

B. Under 16.

C. Over 19.

D. Under 17.

听力原文: A "typical" British family used to consist of mother, father and two children, but in recent years there have been many changes in family life. Some of these have been caused by new laws and others are the result of changes in society. For example, since the law made it easier to get a divorce, the number of divorces has increased. In fact one marriage in every three now ends in divorce. This means that there are a lot of one-parent families. Society is now more tolerant than it used to be of unmarried people, un married couples and single parents.

Another change has been caused by the fact that people arc living longer nowadays, and many old people live alone following the death of their partners. As a result of these changes in the pattern of people's lives, there are many families that consist of only one person or one person and children. You might think that marriage and the families are not so popular as they once were. However, the majority of divorced people marry again, and they sometimes take responsibility for a second family.

(33)

A.High rate of divorce in Britain.

B.Generation gap in Britain.

C.Changes in family life in Britain.

D.One-parent families in Britain.

听力原文:F: Mr. Smith so we were talking about rituals of cultures. And particularly the traditions abut getting married in America.

M: Yes, almost every culture has rituals to signal a change in one's life. Marriage is one of the most basic life changes for people of all cultures. So it's no surprise to find many traditions in America.

F: Like as the ceremony begins, the groom and his attendants stand with the minister, facing the audience. Music signals the entrance of the bride's attendants, followed by the beautiful bride. Nervously, the young couple repeats their vows. Traditionally, they promise to love each other "for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health".

M: But sometimes the couple has composed their own vows.

F: Right. They give each other a gold ring to symbolize their marriage commitment. Finally the minister announces the big moment: "I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride!"

M: And also the bride throws her bouquet of flowers to a group of single girls. Traditions say that the one who catches the bouquet will be the next to marry.

What must the bride and groom do on a wedding ceremony?

A.Holding the ceremony in a church.

B.Composing their own vows.

C.Saying vows

D.Holding the ceremony outdoors.
