听力原文： To be addicted to cigarettes means that your body comes to need them. The addicted substance in cigarettes is nicotine. When people smoke the nicotine goes right into the blood stream and makes people feel relaxed. A smoker's body gets accustomed to the nicotine and if he stops smoking he feels nervous. Many smokers try to stop smoking but because of the addiction to nicotine they feel so uncomfortable that they often find it too difficult to stop.
Another reason is that people simply enjoy smoking and what it symbolizes. Having a cigarette for many people means taking a break. For some people smoking becomes part of certain social rituals, for example, the cigarette after dinner. Many people enjoy smoking because it gives them something to do with their hands. Reaching for a cigarette, lighting it and flicking the ashes are especially comforting in situations where a person feels tense.
Many people also like the taste of tar in cigarettes. However, it is the tar that causes cancer. While governments and health experts have tried to get people to give up smoking entirely, cigarette manufacturers have tried to keep selling them by producing cigarettes with less tar. Many people in western countries have welcomed these cigarettes since they find it hard to stop smoking but want to reduce the risk to their health.

There are warm tropical regions all over the globe but only the Indians of the South American rain forests have formed the habit of sleeping in the open air. Long before they made painful acquaintance with Europeans, they had invented something that was unique on earth: the hammock.
Nobody really knows who first had the bright idea of making sleeping in the air the symbol of untroubled rest. The Indians see the hammock as a "girl of heaven", something given to them a very long time ago.
In it the Indians pass away hot noon hours, napping or chatting. Swinging it to and fro creates a cooling breath of air and keeps away insects. They work and play in hammocks, are born and die there.
Hung like a suspension bridge between heaven and earth, a hammock is dry while the soil is damp and is safe from most wild animals.
Hammocks have the advantage over beds in that they are easy to transport and take up very little space when they have been rolled up. Indians never go on a journey without their hammocks, not even to their plantations.

As prices and building costs keep rising, the "do-it-yourself' (DIY) trend in the U. S. continues to grow.
"We needed furniture for our living room," says John Ross, "and we just didn't have enough money to buy it. So we decided to try making a few tables and chairs." John got married six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are straggling to make a home at a lime when the cost of living is very high. W: Alright, you set out on this journey three months ago. What is your average day like？ How many miles are you running？
M: Yeah, urn, good question, I mean, basically I wake up sometime, you know, around six. I try to leave between eight and nine. I average about probably 30 miles a day. My longest day is uh 56, though actually. That was in Missouri somewhere. That was, that was a pretty killer.
W: Now, tell us about the baby stroller, that is part of your journey.
M: Actually I gut this idea from two guys who did the cross-the-country run from New Jersey to Oregon, David and Scott. Basically it's got my tent in it. I've got a spare tyre, my backpack, a sleeping bag, a little blown mattress. It's kind of a stack of basically everything I need.
